Starting with free Hosting

I have started a my own blog a few weeks ago. I have registered a domain and hosted it in 000webhost under a free hosting account. At this initial moment of my IM journey, I deliberately choose to use free hosting. Is it a bad idea?

if you have money to invest, getting a hosting acc isn`t a bad idea. free hosting tends to rank harder.. and anyhow I don`t work with 000webhost but if they place ads on websites, they will gain from your work, making you lose some hard earned cash. But for starters, to play with it, having a almost free website isn`t that bad.

just get a backup, with a free host take in consideration you can lose your website from one day to the other

take a look here: Waveweb Shared Hosting Packages - Waveweb.com , you can get your first month free:

"Hosting with another providor? Make the move now and feel the Waveweb difference. Receive your first month absolutely FREE!"

What I have done is started a blog on blogger. and have my domain point to that.. so it looks like it is hosted on its own... It helps some - but I do need to work and monetize it a bit more.

Plus an older domain that needs a little work to get back working that it was valued at about $1300~

Yes that's right it does have its benefits and its probably the best way to start because you can try create different blogs and find out without paying anything which ones have the most profit potential before committing any money to them.

Once you have found out what works you will then feel more confident in spending money on hosting.

Well done on making a start.

    Not terrible, no.

It's a much, much, much better idea than what many people do, when they want to start off without paying for hosting (they use sites like Blogger, Squidoo, HubPages and Tumblr instead, which is just asking for trouble, all round).

It's doubtless true that paid-for hosting is more reliable and secure, overall, than free hosting, but you're very unlikely to have a disaster. It doesn't seem at all unreasonable to me. And good luck!

I don't know...if you can't afford even a baby hosting plan for one domain it seems that you're operating from a scarcity mentality. Your decision, but you get what you pay for. If you've got skin in the game you're more apt to MAKE it work.

Does a free host have any negative effect on search engine ranking?

Who can say with certainty? I've only ever seen one or two people (whom I neither trust nor believe) claiming that it can. I find it very difficult to see how it could/would, myself, especially when you think that some companies have free-hosted and paid-hosting sites sharing the same servers (or so they say). I can't imagine why Google might want to do that, anyway.

I honestly don't understand how one can use a free host, if there is a plan to monitize the site. If you are accepting a free sub domain as well, please understand that you are wasting all your efforts. At some point you will need a real domain and when you do that, you are going to lose all back links to your old site. So really bad idea.

Honestly, you are going to spend a lot of time on your site / doing SEO and it makes zero sense to risk it all for a $5 for which you would get a decent shared hosting. If you believe your time and efforts have some value, get out of the free host and be reasonable.

Get hosting at a paid host, you can get a year's hosting for the price of a large pizza. It tells Google that you are serious and not just somebody dabbling around.

This. Plus it tells yourself that you are serious about what you are doing.
And the content is under your control not the owner of the free website...

Not a huge fan of free hosting, obviously. But there ARE a few decent free hosts that I've personally had experience with. (Installing sites for clients.)

Free Web Hosting - Linux, PHP, MySQL, No Ads/Banners by FreeHostia.

Free Hosting & Free .com subdomain | MySQL | PHP | 200GB Bandwidth

Both seem surprisingly decent for a free host.

I would not really recommend using free hosting as i think it hurts your IM.

    1. Most free hosting would use yourdomain.freehosting.com so i don't think it helps with your site branding and if you would change host later, you will have have a drop in traffic.

    2. Speed is normally slower with a free host since you are not paying anything for it. If a site takes too long to load, most visitors may just switch without even looking at your site.

If you want to do IM, i think doing things right from the start helps. There are many cheap hostings available with coupon so just pay to get things right.

Not a bad idea. No one will notice that you are using free hosting anyways unless they dig into your website's source code. But you should definitely move to a more reliable hosting company once you have some cash coming in.

If you are blogging for fun it's no big deal but if you are wanting to make some money with it, you should get your own domain name in most cases. If this is all you can do right now though, it's definitely better than nothing at all.

I agree that free hosting is a bad idea. I have heard a lot of horror stories about people losing their websites. But if this is all you can afford, go for it. I also agree that if you want to make money, you should definitely get paid hosting. Good Luck!

Don't know about 000webhost, but freehostia is a good web hosting provider also. And they are very reliable. You might want to check them out, but don't put the whole stock into free webhosting... eventually you will want to use Hostgator, Bluehost, GoDaddy, or Yahoo Webhosting.

It will be a good advise to remind yourself that you are building your own internet business. Most free hosting services will have limited capabilities and you will have no complete control over your website.

The last thing that you want to experience is the hosting goes down and all your month of hard work is gone too. If you are tight on budget but serious on the internet business, you will want to get a job which will give you a income so that you can put aside some budget for your internet business.

Shared hosting is pretty affordable, If you are serious about IM, you must have a reliable host for sure. It is wise to have your own hosting when you start since there are many many hosting services you can find under $5/mo. They offer great services for a price like this, it is great. As you succeed you can updgrade the service.

      Hope this helps.

      Peace.

Free web hosting, using your own domain name, and without their advertising on your site... sounds like a bargain for anyone who is short of funds or just experimenting.

I started with free web hosting provided by ISPs.

I had a horror experience with a free host, back in 1997. I spent a LOT of time building and promoting the site and eventually was getting useful traffic and making money. Then the company went broke and my site disappeared without warning. Keep good backups!

I like BillyPilgrim's "skin in the game" argument. When you're paying for a good service and good education, you switch from having a hobby to building a business.
