A case Study filtering untargeted email list into highly targeted leads

A case study might be useful For someone who have large untargeted email list sitting on their hard drive having dust and they dont know what to do with it.

So today everyone was talking about a new method to make money online using ripling. that it's a game changer.. All over the world (almost) is aware of this and excited to know more or have an invite.

I didn't requested any or got any invite but wanted to make something out from this buzz. These days i was focusing more on email marketing so thought of testing something out...

In Email marketing, there is a saying (heard somewhere on Warrior forum) : A email list is easy to build (You can advertise on cheap traffic sources and so on) but a targeted optin is very hard.

So here is what i did to filter that untargeted generic list into targeted one.

1. filtered out all the dead emails from the list using a email verifer tool .. it basically checks whether the email address exist on that email server or not and classifies with Good/bad rating. 100% accurate for hard bounce emails everyone fears about.

2. Composed an email with the same paragraph everyone spammed my Facebook newsfeed with about Ripple, just replaced the last line which says "PM me for invite" to a link to my squeeze page.

3. loaded 50K filtered list into my email program and hit send. (the list i have is near 200K)

I use Amazon SES SMTP to send emails so sending went pretty fast..Since there won't be any bounces anyway so no need to fear.

4. So far i am seeing an open rate of 2.66% and that means out of 38K sent so far, 1021 People opened my email and the CTR to my squeeze page is .30% (overall, 38k*.30%) that means 115 people clicked and out of that 92 optined to my new list.

the squeeze page is a simple page, with just 4 forms, Name , Email, Country and Category they are interested in. The thank you page says that i will invite them once I have invites (I will Actually invite everyone who optioned,Few me and rest my friends. )

Now the overall subscriber out of 38K ,becomes only 92 (till now, more than 160K still left to send) but look at the target i have now . Country and their category. i wont say but go and ask any affiliate/CPA marketer value of this data. i am expecting 5 times more optis once the whole list is sent out. I might update about the total number lateron. Even if its near 500, its good to have a new list to market slowly..

if someone is wondering how much bounced, here you go :

Bottom line : if you have something like this sitting around on your drive, it might be a good idea to send a email and then ask about their target (Country/category interested in) and if done right you may find it a good income stream.

PS: For some of the kind souls - I don't have any service/product to sell (Or upcoming so far) of which it's a pre-pitch. Consider it for education purpose only.

Interesting study. low open rate, but you said it was a broad list.

This kind of thing is really going to depend on why your subscribers signed up in the first place. If it is a health list, or a recipe list for example, I don't think it would do much good.

this is a good case study. i have a client who has 7500 ppl interested in court reporter email addresses. i couldn't figure out how to monetize this until you did this case study.

      I used "Email verifier pro".

This sounds like a nice model to quickly grow a optin list and we can help any marketer implement this model using our own SMTP relay service.
A reliable SMTP service is indeed a must to send large sends like this. I saw your SMTP service, Sounds pretty cool and affordable prices..

So ... I want to understand before I try this out. I have a large list of job seekers that grows daily. I'm not doing anything with it currently and am probably leaving money on the table.

Step 1: Filter messages using Email Verifier Pro
    - Q1: How do I buy it? I can't find a way to order on their Web site.

Step 2: Identify offer, create squeeze page, draft email message, etc.

Step 3: Load a chunk of addresses into Amazon SES
    - Q1: Do they have a simple interface or do I need to be super-technical to do this?
    - Q2: It seems like this method of narrowing your list will generate occasional spam complaints. How tolerant are they of that?
    - Q3: Aside from their $0.10/thousand emails sent, are there other significant costs to using their service?

Step 4: Tie into a reliable SMTP service ...
    - Q1: Is this in addition to Amazon SES?
    - Q2: If so, who do you recommend?

Step 5: Send and watch the targeted list grow.

    What am I missing?

      Hi,

Step 1: Filter messages using Email Verifier Pro
      - Q1: How do I buy it? I can't find a way to order on their Web site.
How to Order Software (Not my affiliate link)

Step 2: Identify offer, create squeeze page, draft email message, etc.

Step 3: Load a chunk of addresses into Amazon SES
I mentioned "loaded 50K filtered list into my email program". Amazon SES is not an Email program but they are SMTP service provider. The email program can be anything which can let you send emails in bulk and has an option to use external SMTP Server. It can be a desktop application or web bases script. There are free ones and paid ones available. You don't really need a heavy or costly one. Phplist is one of the best (Free) one out there with same functionality as the bulky ones but little bit low on cosmetics (the user interface) . You can install it via your hosting control panel and you can configure it to use Amazon SMTP if you wish. You might have to google around to find a relevant tutorial, I am not familiar much with it... You can search for more by the term "newsletter manager" or autoresponder script. There are many Wordpress plugin which does the same job. Its the SMTP server which matters, hardly the sending program.

      - Q1: Do they have a simple interface or do I need to be super-technical to do this?
By now it should be clear that Amazon is not the Email program but the SMTP provider. Once you signup, you will get a demo account (Limited) and after that you will have to request production access. In the request form don't tell them you are going to send bulk emails like this on the first day. Instead some good reason. They approves mostly. Once approved you just need to copy the USername , password and SMTP address from them and paste in your email program. No coding ninja skills required..

At this point, it would worth giving a quick read to

      Getting Started with Amazon SES

      -
Q2: It seems like this method of narrowing your list will generate occasional spam complaints. How tolerant are they of that?
I Cannot say anything for sure, But so far they have been much more flexiable then any other SMTP service i have tried or knows off.

      -
Q3: Aside from their $0.10/thousand emails sent, are there other significant costs to using their service?
Yes, the data transfer. It's cheap and you should be within the free tier limit for transfer anyway, but still avoid sending Embedded images in the email. That will cost you data transfer if sending in millions.

Step 4: Tie into a reliable SMTP service ...
Q1: Is this in addition to Amazon SES?
      -

No. Amazon itself is the SMTP service which IS reliable provided you folllow their instructions and use all varification methods..

      - Q2: If so, who do you recommend?
Check the guy above you (who posted). He got a good setup at pretty decent rates. If you dont wanna deal through all this stuff, subscribe to one of his plans.. (I am in no way affiliated with him or tried his service, Just browsed through the site and screenshots he has..)

Step 5: Send and watch the targeted list grow.
      Yep..

      What am I missing?

If you want to avoid buying the software, you can get someone to code few lines in either windows batch script or dot net which will do this :

      1. Take one email (or one line) from the given text file
      2. read the domain part from the email (pretty easy)
      3. Do a mx query for the domain (Nslookup built in command in windows)
      4. If it does not responds, means the domain is expired, Skip and move to next line
      5. if it responds, Do a telnet and helo Mailserver handshake with the email ID from file
      6. if it says Sender invalid, Skip that line,
      7. if it says "250 OK" means all good. pass that email id to a output list and move next.

      Fun stuff..
