.net, or .org, when you can't get a .com

Hi there

I'm thinking of getting a keyword phrase domain name.
Everyone says get .com if you can but what if you can't?
Will a .net or a .org rank just as well with good seo or will the
.com still be on top.

What if that .com is no where to be found
(not on first page, but is index somewhere, when you google that .com domain)

If I got that keyword phrase in .net or .org could I rank 1st page with aggressive seo?

Which will rank better ? .net or .org

I apologise if it sound noobish, I guess I just need confirmation from all you experts.

Thank you

Michael Nguyen

it makes absolutely no difference, ignore what others say, it's all crap...

net, org, com, ie, co.uk, whatever, are all treated the same.

    Then don't.

And then go dominate the search engines
because you'll be able to with a .net for
example just as much as a .com

I try to get a .com for "human" reasons. By human reasons, I mean that people seem to give a .com extension more weight in certain circumstances and also type a .com in when they are trying to remember the name. So because of this, your off page seo might be better with a .com. If you can't find one, .net and .org work too. I have a mix. My .com names seem to do better, but this may just be coincidence.

      I agree with this.

As long as you understand SEO and Branding are NOT the same, and it sounds like you do, it should not matter.

If you plan to create a brand, without a doubt and I do not care what anyone else might say, .Com is absolutely the best way to do it UNLESS you are marketing something non-profit and most cases, .org would be easier to brand.

If you advertise a web address on a billboard, everyone will remember it as .com in most cases if it is commercial, that is a fact.....if it is not a .com, it will be harder for them to remember and cost more to make them remember.

        I agree 100%

Use a .com .net or your country's suffix, in my case .co.uk (or buy them all and point!) if you are dealing in human visitors who are clicking or who you are hoping to click direct to your website. That's my view.

Any other domain suffixes - well, do what you will with them. There appears to be many Warriors posting to this thread that are doing well in the search engines with all sorts of domain suffixes and good luck to them.

So it seems to be speak as you find as far as the search engines are concerned.

        Regards,
        Jeff.

Thanks for your replies. Im not too worried about the person typing it in as I'm targeting organic traffic. Im more concerned whether it will affect my SERP but as you guys have explained, my rankings should have no problem whether its a .net or org.

    Thank you again!

.net, .org, and .com all work the same. In my experience, the lesser extensions don't fare as well. For example, my .net will index high on Google without any SEO. The .us or .info won't.

.com/.net/.org are all on par with one another in SEO value as far as I am concerned. I'm even seeing .info domains gain authority and taking top spots more often.

For the simple fact that when ever someone types in a domain 99.9% of the time they will put .com at the end so for that reason I would strongly suggest you go for the .com version.

If the .com domain is not available you should consider looking at alternative domains.

type in and brandability is the only standpoint by which .com has any leverage. speaking from a strictly seo standpoint, the .net or .org is just fine.

    I actually use .info

If you cant get .com, why use more money then you need.

Or simply change the a tiny bit, or does it have to that url?

What about .info? they are obviously a lot cheaper but is that reflected in the way they are ranked in the SEs?

From a pure SEO perspective, internal optimizations and external link building, they're on the same level. There have been some occasions in the past where Google has made massive algorithmic changes that appeared to only affect .info domains and also they seem to be put under greater algorithmic scrutiny in more competitive niches. This could happen again given recent reports of malware sites using long tails to rank.

Just so you know, I've asked this very question to dozens of "civilians" (non internet marketing types) and I'd say 20% or so tell me when they see .info as the domain, they tend to think MLM/scam/GetRichQuick/unprofessional and other non-flattering things.

So how the internet marketing echo chamber feels about .info is irrelevant. I would even venture to say how Google feels about it is irrelevant. You need to know how your potential customers feel about it. And the $5 or so you'd save by getting a .info vs a .com/.net/.org is IMHO the sort of penny-pinching that does more harm than good.

@Loz - hey Loz, there was a time (2003-ish?) when .edu did impact ranking. Are you saying that's no longer true or were you speaking just about .com/.net/.org?

      Hi,

You can always get a dot com name.

      If your phrase is

      stop dog barking

and the dot com is taken , then just ad an extra word on the end.

      like

      stopdogbarkingnowdotcom
      stopdogbarkingtodaydotcom
      stopdogbarkingforeverdotcom

      etc.

      Later,
      Terry

I've heard that .org actually gets more "google points" when the spiders are crawling, but I don't know how true that is. However .org has a slightly classier tone to it, so all things being equal I would opt for that.

Well ok, I might be just a little bit weird, but I always think of the .com thing as an American thing. In Canada, a .com is the one that won't ship to Canada. You have to type in dell.ca or amazon.ca to get delivery here. It's probably just because it sounds nicer to me, but lately when I hit a problem with a .com not being available that's the way I've gone. Besides, people might think I live in California!

Now there is no limit to how stupid people are but sooner or later it has to dawn on the rest of them there are more than .coms. Look at sxc.hu, or craigslist.org for examples that have done really well without a .com.
