For a blog setup (no membership areas) - I would use something like this:

    1) WP Super Cache
    2) Google XML Sitemaps
    3) Social Sharing
    4) WP Backup to Dropbox
    5) Akismet
    6) Contact Form 7

My theme has built in SEO functions - so don't really need an additional SEO plugin. Security is handled manually.

    Sorry - can't give you 10 - don't have them.

I'm looking at 20 different sites and all of them are very unique as to which plugins they are using.

There is no cookie cutter list.

The purpose of the site and how it's consumed will determine if/which plugins are needed.

My response to this post would be you shouldn't be aiming to use 10 plugins.

Too many people use plugins like fashion accessories. Each and every plugin you add to your site effects your sites performance. You should only be using plugins that are absolutely necessary. I have seen the inside of many Wordpress sites where people are literally just adding anything and everything just because they can.

Your website visitors will hate you for it when your site takes forever to load.

So just keep things to a bare minimum. Don't go looking for more plugins unless you have a need for a certain function, etc that your website can't live without.

You need to keep plugins list to minimum. A each site could have different plugins. For each core function you need in a site , you may need a specific plugin for that...

Here is general plugins we keep using in most WP sites:

    1. Social Sharing Icons (JetPack)
    2. Anti Comment Spam (Akismet)
    3. Contact Form (Clean-Contact or Contact7)
    4. Home Slider (Genesis Slider or Featured Content Gallery)
    5. SEO Plugin (Yoast's WP SEO) (When Using GENESIS, i use their builtin SEO)
    6. Cache Plugin (w3tc or Super Cache)

Again this list may be different from site to site as sometime one feature is way more
important than other like for Membership site , you have membership plugin like DAP or S2Member or Members...

opalfx, a couple of weeks ago, my answer would have been different.

After spending at least five hours struggling with plugin incompatibilities on two blogs, however, here's my answer:

    * Jetpack: Jetpack for WordPress

    * A security plugin of your choice

    * A cache plugin, also of your choice

    * All in One SEO

    That's it.

I used to have some 25 plugins on most of my blogs. Now I'm keeping it SIMPLE.

Jetpack's comprehensive. If you explore all the options, it can handle a huge amount of work you'd need many different plugins to accomplish.

Have fun with your blog(s). :-)

    Cheers

I love Wordpress. I've hacked with it for years....

However, look at all of the plugins we are using. They are all for optimizing Wordpress. Isn't that crazy?

I woke up one day and asked myself, "Why do I have to spend so much time optimizing and securing Wordpress?" It's nuts. All of that is time wasted, that could have been spent building our businesses.

I ask these questions because I have seen what's next. I have been coding it. In the light of what is coming, Wordpress looks ugly.

        Your modesty is overwhelming .

.. so you, just by yourself, are coding this?

I thought successful singular software development projects (of the kind of size that would be able to challenge WordPress) had gone the way of the do do bird.

If it's a group effort, maybe some others in the group deserve some "marquis time" as well ...

Wordpress does what it's supposed to right out of the box. If you want it to do more, you add plugins.

If you were on in internal network, you would have little need for Akismet or the security plugins.

Want to do a family site so your friends can see what you did on your vacation, you don't need any of the SEO plugins, but you might not want advertisements for xxx sites of viagra suddenly appearing on the front page, so you install Wordfence.

I could come up with more, but I think you get my drift.

h/t to Matt Mullenweg a former neighbor who got out of Texas when the gettin was good.

zapseo: Many of the largest (SaaS) companies were started by one person. Check out the project video in my signature if you have doubts. I'd love a chance to show it to you.

RobinInTexas: Thanks. I've coded over 10 Wordpress Plugins, so I'm pretty familiar with it. I loved it. But, I've made something that addresses all of it's problems, and does so much more...

C'mon everyone, let's think about this! The landscape has changed. Technology is advancing fast. New internet-connected devices are coming out every day. Is a content management system that is joined-at-the-hip with a website really what we need today?

Or... Wouldn't it be more interesting if a CMS completely detached its content from presentation, and instead kept your content in the cloud, where it would be liberated, so that you could choose where you wanted to show it... on a website, a mobile device, or thousands of websites and mobile devices, simultaneously...

I'm guessing, if you wanted to pare it down...what you say is true for just about ANY endeavor.

"started" is not the same as "coded" ... and I'd wager that MOST SaaS companies that are successful were successful because they offered a UNIQUE product, one that hadn't been seen in the market place before.

You've already pretty much positioned your product as a competitor to WordPress. Doing that with one person, and one person coding it, seems about as likely to succeed as ONE person writing a new operating system and expecting it to succeed.

I don't even think Matt Mullenweg knows all of the WordPress code any more .. he has a TEAM.

So, sounds like you are a David out to fight a Goliath ?

""Problems worthy of attack prove their worth by fighting back." -- Piet Hein.

Think of this not as fighting (I don't), but as defense of your thesis. You've made claims (which are bit grandiose) ... and are failing to back them up. In my world, that's called HYPE.

And you don't get a pass by saying "you're not a fighting type" ...

Trust me, if you want to TRULY help people, you have to know how to fight ... because a LOT of helping people is helping them FIGHT through the obstacles and bureaucracy and other things that are holding them back.

If you aren't a fighter, then I doubt you can deal with problems that will present themselves in your attempt to combat WordPress ...

...it's not impossible ... but you're not sounding up to the task.

          Provide some grit and more.

P.S. I could care less about motion graphics. Nice try at changing the topic.
