Your Affiliate Manager- What do you expect?

Hi guys, I am an affiliate manager and I just decided to finally join the Warrior Forum. I look forward to posting here quite often. I wanted to dive right in and get a discussion started on the dynamic between a publisher and his/her affiliate manager.

What are your expectations? What are the dos and do nots? What is the difference between a good AM and a bad one? Feel free to share any success or horror stories between you and a past AM. I will chime in later with my history and what the other side expects.

Welcome WSMcody! Having a friendly and helpful AM helps alot. I think like any business, building relationship is important so try to take some time to know your client.

Sometimes, when my AM is not responsive, it gets frustrating as in CPA, time is money.

My AM was the worst. never responds to me, never answers questions. I gave up and moved on. We are all newbies at one time or another....

Oh actually i thought AM know at least abit of marketing.
And are there to help you succeed.
Not pushing you offers that cant convert just because the clients are pushing them.

Back then i spoke to a few AMs, and i knew from the tone of their voices, they were not well verse in IM.
And they told me i was very knowledgeable.. lol [a feather on my cap]

I mean i do imagine AMs doing quite well themselves in IM, then working as AM to earn even more or as a side line, i imagine they earn a % cut of our earnings too.

So its like forex brokers, they trade themselves, and they earn from traders too, spreads and all..

Or at least if they are not doing well in IM, at least they know the theory behind it. Since we all know theory and practical may show a different outcome.

So a knowledgeable AM would be very comforting. =)

PS - an AM asked me if i wanted to join them b4. Since i knew so much. But i still think many warriors here know more than me. But i just take it as a compliment.

I've worked with 3 and none have them have ever worked out! The first moved on without telling me; the second one's wife left him and he was diagnosed with diabetes - obviously had to deal with those issues first; the third and I are still friends but he moved on to another offline business.

    Maybe it's me?!!!!

My expectation would be that they work to find affiliates, they are responsive to my questions, that they own up to not knowing when they don't know but seek out the answers and that they work as hard as I do.

    hmmmm

I've been an AM for over 2 years now in dating and I would like to think all my affiliate are happy with me. These are for sure 4 things I follow in addition to setting goals and helping them reach it.

I like affiliate managers who send you out all the info you need for a new promotion in the email message.

By that I mean your login details if you have to log into the affiliate resource center for promo materials and your affiliate link.

It's also handy to get the sample emails and suggested tweets etc in the email they send out.

It saves me a whole lot of time.

A good affiliate knows how to bump payouts, knows what kind of offers are good for you, what has been working well for similar affiliates, and responds quickly. I've generated over a million dollars in revenue to the affiliate networks I've worked with and had plenty of good and bad affiliate managers. Good luck!!

As an AM, I don't want to give away too much of "what is working for similar affiliates". Don't get me wrong, I will give you every statistic I have available, but at the same time, out of respect to the guys who are really doing well, I don't want to give away too many of their secrets...

(I am not new to affiliate marketing, just the forum )

Ouch, i think that should be an industry "secret", but anyhow, thanks for sharing.
But i think affiliates wont sit well with this. I dont know.

To me stats for CPA is not as useful as it's thought to be.

Offer 1 may be promoted by 100s of affiliate making profits. At an EPC of $5

Offer 2 may be promoted by 10 affiliates and the EPC is $10.
[this is because 1 of the affiliate is a super affiliate and doing very well thus bring the number up]

But i would rather go for offer 1.

        And scenario 2.

Offer 1 may be promoted by 100s of affiliates with an EPC of $5.
[But there is 1 super affiliate and the EPC was brought down because the rest of the affiliates wasnt doing well, it was a very hard offer to convert, only 1 guy manage to convert them]

Offer 2 may be promoted by 10 affiliate with an EPC of $10.

Now i would choose offer 2.

U see, these are some stats AMs will never give.
        Like how many are promoting.
How many of them are doing well and how many are not. etc etc..

And of cos i do expect some advices like roughly which method is working well or what type of websites etc.
I dont expect them to reveal the actual site other affiliates are doing.

So if stats like EPC is what AM can only give, then im afraid u are on your own.
Because this number can mean alot of things.
Conversion rate can mean alot of things too when there are more than 1 person doing the offer.

If i hired an affiliate marketer manager, i expect alot of new affiliates. If this is the only thing that you would be doing for 8 hours a day, i expect a ton of new affiliates... into the thousands. Agree?

Yes, recruiting tones of affiliate will not mean anything if all of them are baby affiliates and if u dont take time to "nature" them, they will "die off".

So what is the use of thousands of affiliates when they all cannot make it as you know is very common in the industry.

Hmm, question here, what can an Affiliate Manager due beyond nurturing to drive more affiliate activity? Curious as to what the general public has to say about this one

      Interesting question.

Within my platform, I have each affiliate tagged for offers they would potentially be interested in running. So if we get a new hot dating offer, I can sift easily through my pubs that I know run offers like it and make them aware that way, as opposed to depending on my horrible memory of which pubs might run what.

As with all business, the numbers are what matter. If someone is paying you X dollars, they expect their investment back + something extra that you bring to make it worth it.

If they don't expect that, then you probably shouldn't be working with them anyway because they have no idea what they are doing.

I expect my AM to let me know what offers are converting well and to always keep me up to date on offers that are expiring or have been capped/stopped. There's nothing worse than realising your campaign has been running for x amount of hours driving traffic to some unrelated redirect offer or a dead page.

I always prefer the AMs that go the extra mile and are not afraid to ask if there's anything they can do to help me out. I hate AMs who are up their self and seem to be disinterested in you unless it's solely to benefit them.
