Is Go Daddy Trying to Rip Me Off?

I purchased a Buy Now domain name a few weeks ago and was still waiting for it to be transfered to my account. I emailed Go Daddy to see what was going on and this was their response:

Dear XXX,

You will need to purchase a transfer to move this process forward. I have placed the transfer in your cart. Please let us know, by responding to this message when you have processed your cart. We will follow up with seller when we hear from you.

Please let us know if we can assist you in any other way.

This seems a bit ridiculous. Not only have I waited over two weeks for a domain to be transfered but now they have the audacity to say that I have pay even more money. I've purchased a couple of Buy Now domains before and never had to purchase a transfer.

If they're talking about domain renewal then, yeah, this makes sense. If not, then I'm very confused.

I have purchased Buy Now domains through GoDaddy in he past and never had this occur. I don't know if this due to a new policy, the closeness of the expiration date of the domain, or something else. I suggest you call the support number or use the online chat feature to try and get answers so you can move ahead with the use of the domain.

Based on your post, I presume you are moving the domain to another registrar. If so, the expiration date could be a factor. Otherwise, GoDaddy's response is a mystery.

I'm not sure, but this might not even be within ICANs rules.

Either way, it's a big dishonest making you pay to transfer a domain.

Have you got other domain with GD, or do you just transfer everything away from them? (I prefer the latter).

    Here was my response:

Why do I have to purchase a transfer? I've bought a few Buy Now domains before and have never had to pay this so called "transfer fee."

It's already been two weeks. Are you telling me that if I hadn't of emailed you then this domain would never have been transferred into my account? But now I have emailed you (albeit after a shocking two week wait where nothing happened) I now have to pay even more money just to receive the domain.

Considering that this was a Go Daddy auction, surely there should be no fee for transferring a domain to Go Daddy. I may as well transfer the domain to a different registrar, as well as all my other domains while I'm at it.

    This was their generic reply:

    Dear XXX,

In order to complete the transaction for ------------ a domain transfer must be purchased. This is because the domain name is not already registered with Go Daddy. For information on domain transfers, and how to purchase one, please click on the link below:

Domain Transfer | Domain Name Transfer Search Tool - Go Daddy

The seller has forwarded the Authorization code ("EPP code"), which you will need to complete the transfer.

I'm still confused by this, even after having read up on a few things online.

Is there a way not to pay this fee?
It's not so much the money, it's that I really, really despise Go Daddy. This isn't the first time I've had problems with them.

As soon as I find out how to move registrars I will. Although, private registration may complicate things.

GoDaddy is notorious for their frivolous and sometimes possibly unethical "charges". Just conduct a few searches here on the WF to see what experiences other Warriors have had with them. Also, do a Google search on GoDaddy complaints.

Call their support team and ask to speak to a supevisor. Quit with the e-mailing back and forth.

I stopped using Godaddy a long time ago. There are far superior choices out there. Just because someone can buy a superbowl ad doesn't mean they are any good.

    Hey,

Personally I don't have any experience with Godaddy but I've heard so many complain about them! It's quite ridiculous if you ask me.... I'm using Namescheap and hosting with Hostgator and not a single problem. Service is awesome too!

    Anyways, all the best!

I think I would tell them that if they are going to charge you this fee, you will take your domain to Namecheap, or some other registrar of your choice. Or tell them you want your money back for the purchase. this was not in your plans when you bought it, and if you had known, you would not have made the purchase.

If they don't cooperate with you, do a charge back on your card. This was not in the purchase agreement, you paid the price offered, and now you want your domain. if they will not deliver it for the price offered in their auction, then you have been cheated out of your money and you want a refund. Be firm, and ask to talk to a supervisor if necessary, and every time you don't get what you want, go up to the next layer of boss.

    Be firm.

Nothing unusual about that charge at all if the domain name is not currently registered with Godaddy. You would have to pay a transfer fee for any domain registrar to transfer a domain to them.

      This is correct.
All "RECEIVING" registrar charge transfer fee.
Transfer fee is same as renewal fee, typically.
And they will add 1 year registration, typically.

So, you can think it as you are just adding another year

Godaddy is NOT trying to rip you off.

Thanks for this level-headed response. I have been with GoDaddy for years now, I don't think they are that bad, but your mileage may vary. They do sometimes sound confusing, to say the least, but I continue doing business with them, probably out of sheer inertia.

The amount of distrust I see in this forum regarding virtually everything under the sun is astounding. No, GoDaddy is not trying to rip anyone off for $12 (or whatever the transfer fee is).

Yeah, I have had this before, they advertise the domain, then get you to pay to lock in with them.

I don't use them as much any more, and will look for other alternatives that don't involve being dodgy with me.

Since they know it has to be transferred they should build that into the price, so you can make the decision there and then.
