What does unlimited hosting really mean?

Fellow Visigoths,

I have a question about web hosting.

When a company says it offers unlimited bandwidth and unlimited space what does that really mean?

We always hear stories of people who have "unlimited" plans who get shut down by the host.

*also*

If you have unlimited bandwith/storage does that mean that you'll be able to host multiple videos on your sites without worrying about an additional bandwidth fee.

Thanks for your answers

Kevin

It's just a marketing strategy. There is no such thing as unlimited space and bandwidth. If they find out you are using too much resources they'll eventually advice you to get a higher plan like a dedicated server, or worse, shut you down if you are affecting other users in the same server as yours. If such unlimited plans exist then Google won't have to worry about gazzillions of hosting expenses with Youtube.

It's nonsense. They mean unlimited, if you are using it the "right way", no extrem use.

You can host as much videos as you want until you get no traffic
Test your usage of bandwidth if >~1TB you should consider using dedicated servers

    All the best,

I just happen to be working on an article on the top ten hosting companies, what I found out is that some companies will shut you down if your site becomes to big and gets too much traffic. Low budget hosting companies appear to be trying to get as many small sites as possible, larger sites take up space they could be charging more small sites for.

Companies that I found that are good to use are JustHost, HostGator, and InMotion. JustHost is the company I use. Stay away from BlueHost and HostMonster they will dump your site if it gets to big or gets traffic, I've read over 100 complaints about those two sites.

My article on top ten hosting companies can be found on my homebusiness website: Makecashnow(dot)biz if you would like to see some of the comments, ratings, and specifics on the different hosting companies. Available 4/26/09

    I hope that helps,

    Shawn

there is no such thing as unlimited .. if you deliver a lot more traffic than they predict you will .. you will see they have a problem with it

However, they can afford to make such a statement as most webmasters that sign up don't even use 70% of their bandwidth.

Same with "unlimited space email" .. People don't really use that much

Ditto what everyone else said. I've had warnings from so called "unlimited" hosts back in the day for using too much bandwidth and server space. Go for quality, not quantity.

Unlimited hosting is clearly a marketing gimmick. If you try to put a youtube clone on it, you will find out very quick that there is a big asterisk by the word "unlimited".

And no smart business owner is going to try to setup a real business on such shaky ground.

If you want to host videos, my advice is to use Amazon S3 like all the serious marketers do. Then you'll truly have "virtually" unlimited bandwidth at dirt cheap prices. And you'll have a company behind it with the infrastructure to handle anything you throw at them.

The host I use has "unmetered" bandwidth and storage. Their definition is that they won't shut you off like some hosts do if you suddenly get a surge of traffic and then it backs off. However, if it is consistent, they will ask you to upgrade to a VPS or Dedicated Server.
