Getting people to opt in - giveaway product or email course?

Just wondering what people find the most effective way to get people to sign up to your list - I guess the two main options are a free ebook or a free email course.

I'm talking about non-IM niches, health and welfare primarily (I think people in the IM niche act differently as they kind of know what to expect).

Give them something that they want...

Seriously have a look at what the other leaders in your niche are doing for their listbuilding and then put your own spin on it.

In some niches coupon codes will crush it, and in others it will be a free trial, or a video demonstration. You need to pick something and then improve from a start point of something.

If you wait and wait to create the perfect page then your competition will just grow and grow whilst your thinking about what to do.

Thanks Andrew. Interestingly for the niche I'm working on at the moment I can't find any site in the first few pages of google for quite a few related search terms that are doing opt ins.

This obviously could suggest that it's not the type of market that an opt in would appeal to.

    Hi,

Like Andy says, try to be a little different. A course is great - but you can always do this later. I actually do both on my blog but a simple resource list I knocked up in a few hours gets way more subscribers than the full 6 part course.

    Just a thought.

    All the best with it.

Free course, giving something away is too gimmicky imo.

It's difficult to suggest something without knowing the niche or market.

Here are 2 ways that work like gang busters:

Often times it works to simply sell something (my favorite approach).
Another option is to do a simple survey and ask for email to see results.

You need to offer something different than the others. If you offer an email training course, people are used to your style of writing, rather than providing some crappy ebook, thus they will be much more likely to convert to buyers if you recommend a product to them.

I've tried both and by far the better performing of the two was the 5-7 day eCourse.

It will depend on your niche but if you're teaching a system or technique specific to your market the the course is the way to go.

It gets them to 'buy into you' which is half the battle won. They're actively waiting on your next email and this conditions them so that once your course stops and you move into your email sequence and daily blasts they are ready and willing to open them and read.

    Good luck

First. It must be of value. People forget that when putting together your funnel, the value of the product is most important.
Secondly, anything that people will sign up for and give you the ability to engage them over the course of some time is best. I would go with a course of some kind that is delivered over 4 or 5 days. Just make sure the course it stellar, so when you follow up with your offer, they will want to jump on it because of the value you give for free.

I see a lot of people make the mistake of being afraid to give their best for free, but when you do, you will see better conversion in your back end. Take the best part of your offer and give it away for free and get them results, and you will build a rabid fan base.

    be well,

    Lane
