$230pm from 2,266 visitors in PHP niche - should I be doing better?

I wrote a PHP Code Generator 12 years ago which used to make me up to $2,000 per month, but over the years despite numerous updates the sales tailed off.

Last year I got into SEO and managed to get my site up to #1 for the term "PHP Code Generator" and good positions on other relevant terms - and it stuck until last month and am now bouncing about page #1 - but I still managed to get 2,266 unique visitors last month.

I made around $200 in direct sales including TrialPay from 7 customers and made around $30 from Google Adsense.

These figures are pretty typical of the last year or so.

Obviously few people here will have had direct experience of the PHP development niche but I'm just wondering if anyone has any suggestions on how I could better monetise the traffic?

I've tried a couple of related affiliate schemes but didn't get anything from them.

Any suggestions on how I could better optimise the traffic would be appreciated

For your monthly visitor numbers I don't think you are doing too bad.

The two things you can do to improve sales is:

    1) Build a mailing list.
    2) Find more ways to drive traffic to your site

For monthly visitors in the small thousands, your base line seems to correspond.
But you are like "Can't I scale this up or something?".
In that case, try more of off-page linking strategies for better SEO results, and start a list by tracking prospects and visits for your site.
By the way, which methods were you using before the sales tripped?

I really didn't know anything about internet marketing in those days, I just uploaded my trial version to software directories.

At that time (circa 2001) people still actively went to software directories looking for interesting new software, that doesn't really happen any more.

There were also no direct competitors when I started out.

If only I'd started a mailing list when I started out, better late than never I suppose!

      Thanks for the tips folks.

Do you buy competitor backlink data from the likes of MajesticSEO / SEOProfiler / SEOMoz / AHRefs?

Manage it with Backlinks Explorer to help you get more backlinks more quickly.
