Have you ever seen this message before ...
A username and password are being requested by http: // www . yoursite.com:80 The site says: "For human verification, enter 'human' as the Username and this verification number 'XXXXX' as the Password"
I am wondering if it is a genuine message or a phishing thing.

Will

EDIT: XXXXX is some generated number.

Looks like they are trying to probe which accounts are being actively managed?

If it was a fishing scam though, they've given you the logins? I'd contact support at your we host and see what they say...

Already contacted Claire. However, it struck me that it might be a way of setting up an anonymous FTP account or something like that.

If I were you, I'll be careful. It might be a scam and filling up the form might result to something disastrous.

Which is why I didn't and why I am asking if anyone else has ever seen this message.

What was the context where it showed up?

I have seen some forms, including a common helpdesk software, that resort to questions like that instead of captcha.

...Even if you're on the right track, you'll get run over if you just set there.

Well, let's just say that the context was nothing that I don't usually do every day - and I have never seen the message before.

Yes - not identical, but similar.

I had been doing a bit of testing and finally realised it was an extra bit of protection via (I think) Apache.

David's post in the thread you referenced is particularly helpful.

Still waiting on my hosting provider - they are in a different time zone - but feeling a bit happier now

      Thank you.

      Will

EDIT: Hosting provider did confirm it to be extra protection.
