Buy Now button in emails: Should I like to the sales page or to the shopping cart?

In some of my autoresponders I promote the product I've created.

Should I link the "buy now" button in my autoresponder to the shopping cart (hosted on ejunkie) where they can enter the details and pay, or should I link the "buy now" button in my autoresponder to my sales page on my website where they would need to click buy now again and then enter their details.

So far I've been linking to my sales page, but isn't it a useless step?
What do you vendors do?

Thanks!

Linking to the sales page is a much better idea for the fact it serves as a point for you to sell and elaborate further upon your product.

I'd refrain from using "buy it now" buttons in your emails and instead tell your subscribers that they can learn more by clicking in a simple text link (enlarged and bolded).

Firing out a "buy it now" button, particularly one that leads direct to a checkout would perhaps be seen as bad manners by some, but I suppose it depends on your relationship with your list and any preselling you've done.

      I concur (mostly) with Daniel.

Sending them to a sales page with more information and the buy it now button is probably the better route - most of the time.

What I have done before, and has worked very well - was to send them to the sales page for more info. BUT include a discounted link in the email.

So, something like - you can get more info on product X here.

BUT, for the great discount, click here! (25%) off!

...Something to that effect...(sorry kinda burnt out today, creative juices aren't flowing).

This just shows them, that being part of your list, they get sweet deals...while everyone else has to pay full price.

Keep the email brief and pre-sell it then link to sales via a link and not a button. A lot of people have images turned off and won't even see your button.

Just realized I wrote buy now "button" instead of link....

Of course I dont use "buttons" in my emails but only links.

How can you really know. I would say that in 9/10 cases you want to link to the sales page. But...what if.. Your e-mail for some reason convert better then the sales page for this particular product...I do agree with the others here, but split testing isn`t a bad thing to implement in your business...
