Phone Number Question for Dropshippers... and others

For those of you that Dropship, or sell physical products, or heck, anything where you list a phone number on your website.

Have any of you ran a test or found any evidence either way as to whether an 800 number (or 888 or 877 or whatever) has been better or worse than using your local area code? I'd love to hear any opinions. Thanks.

    Some people may still not have free nationwide calling, so a toll-free number would appeal to them. Also, a toll free number may give the stronger appearance of a business rather than someone working out of their home.

    Theoretically you will get a higher call volume but a few of my customers have stated, you get more tire kickers when there is an 800 numbers since they know they aren't paying for it. In this day and age of unlimited minutes it may not seem that way anymore but there is still the psychological effect that 800 is free.

    Look at Godaddy.com , they grew a thriving business with no 800 number. As long as you list a number is the key.

    One of my sites has 800-number and the other 877 number. It doesn't seem to differ. If you price it right and give people what they want it shouldn't matter in my opinion.

    If people don't know that 877 is free just tell them. Call the toll free number 877-xxxxxxx for a free consultation.

    Good points. I forget there are people that don't use cell phones for everything, and maybe long distance calls do cost them money.
