Copied website

Hi all

After a bit of advice. My website has been copied - by this I mean the theme, layout, domain is extremely similar, the product being sold is exactly the same and some of the content has been copied - they look almost identical (about 98% identical).

I have contacted the host of the site in question, and to say they are being awkward is an understatement. They insist the whole scenario is a coincidence and theres nothing they will do - I mean really, a coincidence? They are also asking for documented proof I own the content on my site, but how would I possibly have this kind of proof, I wrote it off the top of my head!

The hosts are being purposefully awkward in my opinion, and I now don't know where to go to get help or get this site amended/taken down.

Is there anywhere else to turn or is it universally accepted that copying other websites is OK to do?

    Hi Ecopac,
    Do you have their details? Probably the best move first of all, is just to make contact and point out that they should not be copying your content and that you would like them to remove it.That may be enough. You can gently point out that their actions are illegal and further action will be taken if the copied content is not removed promptly.
    Give them 14-21 days and if they have not taken it down, get some legal advice.

    From my experience, you cant do anything big if your website isnt like "facebook" and you have no patent on it.

    My solution for this?

    I've build startups now for about 10 years, and as the success comes in, there are always people who copy the startup.

    But the biggest mistake you can make is to worry about them, to write with them or even worse to call the lawyers.
    What you SHOULD do is just, to be better. That can be archieved through backlinking or fighting. There will be always be competition, but believe me.
    If they copied you, you were good. But there is ALWAYS a way, to make it better. Get more traffic / Get more content / get more backlinks

    This will always make you look better.
