I tend to agree with Jason. I am sure that there are many who disagree, but I think you are better off spending the effort you would spend in a MLM program on your own products and efforts.

I would venture to guess that the bulk of the people on this forum are not involved in MLM nor are they product creators.. they are affiliate marketers.

This is just my opinion, to be successful in IM
      you need money.

You must be able to do something?

List what you can do online and offline for someone
and go do it until you have some money.

Then pick one of the 3722 (I made that number up, but it's close ) ways to make money online.
Study it and apply it, keep trying and learning, until it works.

Keep coming to this forum and ask questions, but stick to one thing!

Do not subscribe to everybody's email list, if you have unsubscribe.

      Focus, focus, focus.

Your better off having your own business rather than promoting someone elses.

Also most MLM distributors are making a large percentage of their income from the training tools they sell to their distributors.

In some cases that's really the only substantial income they make.

The whole field is really very marginal and ultimately you're not building your own business despite what they tell you (read the terms of service in the distributor agreements and you'll see what I mean...they own the distributors you recruit and in many cases they can cancel your distibutorship and you can do nothing about it...that's not a business).

There are many legitimate ways to make money online.

The first thing you need to do is develop some real skill in just ONE area...copywriting, pay per click, SEO, social networking, product creation, list building...it doesn't matter too much which area as long as you become genuinely proficient in at least one area you can make good money and build from there.

        Kindest regards,

I started out in Mlm's about 4 years ago. That is what got me involved in Internet marketing. Making money online requires a lot of hard work. It doesn't matter if you create your own products or "pimp" somebody else's.

When you promote mlm's, all your hard work brands someone elses name and drives traffic to their sites. The biggest problem I ran into was the attrition rate. Most mlm's require you to sign up people underneath you and that is how you make money.

The problem is that most people won't work as hard as you or they don't know what to do. It is left up to you to train them, ie more work for you. Most stay in the program for a month or 2 and then drop out.

If you create your own product, all of the branding is about you. All of your efforts build your business. As you create products and websites, you can use them to leverage your future products. You can promote to the same client base over and over again.

Put up a blog, get yourself an auto responder account, get your hands on some PLR products and start giving them away to build your list. While you are building your list, you can start working on unique products of your own.

This is probably the easiest and fastest way to start making money online while you create a lasting presence and business at the same time. You start the list building process first. That is the most important thing. The opt in list that you build will be an asset that you will have from now on.

There is no "one way" to make money!

The biggest factor in how much money you will make is you - the skills and abilities you bring to the table and most importantly the effort and aplication you put in.

Firstly you need to find a "way" that suits your skills and resources. Then you need to put in a decent effort - actually doing something rather than just reading about it or playing with it.

If you are good at writing ebooks - then do that

if you are god at writing articles - then do that.

If you are good at persuading people to become part of your downline, and then showing them how to make profits and persuade people to become part of thier downline - then do that!

Tell us what skills, abilities and resources you have and we will be able to make suggestions as to "ways" that will suit you.

MLM can be a good way to make money - and it can be lucrative
if you understand the way it works and acquire the skills to
      get it working for you.

Online MLM is tricky for a variety of reasons. Offline it is a
people-management business. Online it tends to be more
of a marketing thing, but attrition will generally be a problem
for you because the people you sponsor online will want to
do it online as well (in their underwear, so to speak) and
many will lack the perseverance to get the skills success in
online marketing requires... and if they do get them it will
probably be after they've quit your MLM and moved on
      to other opportunities.

I've studied the issues with this quite a lot because I am
a believer that network marketing can be very powerful
but it is essential for YOU as a leader to be prepared to
equip your followers to succeed. Unfortunately most
MLMs pay so little per customer you will take a long time,
several months, to recoup the cost of acquiring each
paying customers... and before that time many will have
quit buying thus increasing the number of months it
requires to be in profit per the average customer.

When you look at the numbers building an MLM can be
costly or slow - either you'll need to invest a good sum
of money in advertising and then be patient to recoup
those costs, or build slowly with cheap or free advertising
      - a situation that has many distributors never getting
      out of first gear.

I've solved the problems in my own network marketing
activity - but it is not MLM that I do so my costs for
getting customers are generally recouped on the first
sale, putting me in profit rather than several months
of negative cash-flow for each new enrollment.

I would say no to MLM for a variety of reasons. Granted, these are my own personal reasons but they may serve as a guide for coming up with your own.

MLM = Too Much Dependence on the Efforts of Other People
Because of the way MLMs are setup, your success depends largely on the success of those in your downline. Therefore, you have to be willing to train/motivate them, which can be a job in itself. Too much like having employees in terms of being dependent on them, but without the control you'd have as a boss to hire/fire.

Relying on the motivation level and stick-to-it-iveness of your downline when it comes to making your mortgage/rent payment seems like a horrible idea unless you have enough people on your team to make up for the lack of production that will likely be the case. Not trying to be a cynic, just a realist.

Your Investment Might Be Better Spent on Expanding Your Own Tools and Know-How
Yes, I know...you can make money in MLM by simply selling the "product" and not the "business". But if you're going to do that, you may as well create your own product and sell that instead, where...
        • You get to choose your market, or multiple markets
        • You set your own prices and determine your own costs (therefore, you control your profits) - what if the MLM company changes the payment plan or shuts down altogether? OOPS!

Besides, you're going to have to invest a few hundred dollars in most MLM companies anyway just to get on board. I'd spend that on a few tools or how-to's related to creating my own product instead.

But Remember, You CAN Get Some Tools For Free
Keep in mind, you can start with the following free/low-cost tools, a decent idea and a little hustle (and you'll definitely have to hustle if you're doing MLM):

Just my thoughts. Hope that helps.

I think it depends on you. What do you like, what do you want to accomplish?

Personally, I'm currently working the Fitness niche in mlm. I love it as the company has a $90 Million Dollar budget and their products are Very well known. Yes, it's an mlm... and what's really cool is the that the company gives the customers who buy the products from the infomercials to their reps.

It's unique... and the only company I'm aware of that does that.

MLM is a great way to make money especially during a recession. Here is the key to selecting an MLM company.

    1. Is the product or service going to be purchased by a large number of people regardless.

    2. Is the price equal to or lower than they can get by going through normal sales channels? If it's a little higher priced, do they add value to it?

    3. Is the product or service a consumable? In other words, will people buy the same thing over and over?

    4. Has the MLM company been in business for 5 years or more? (Is it stable?)

    5. Do "YOU" already buy the product or service through normal sales channels?

    6. Are "YOU" going to buy the product(s) or service(s) from the MLM? If not, forget about it. MLM is not for you.

MLM actually is a good way of earning money. But I think most of the MLMs are fraudulent. If you can make a better choice in choosing the MLM and have good abilities to attract others join your business, then it will be the very best way to earn money.

Multi-level marketing (MLM) programs can promise amazing income streams for anyone who would decide to join their ranks. These MLM programs have become very popular earning opportunities in recent years, given the success they could share for their enrollees. With the advent of online MLM companies, the industry has flourished even further. Nowadays, countless people can earn through their MLM efforts from the comforts of their own homes.

I think that MLM is one of many ways to generate money online, but I have found that it is probably easier to maybe start with affiliate marketing. That's just one man's opinion though.

There are countless opportunities out there. I have browsed through some of the replies and agree with many of them. I guess the one key to it all, is to find a program or become an affiliate with whatever you are passionate about. I wish you much success.

I was involved in a couple of established MLM companies in 2000/2001 and having invested considerable time and money did extremely well for a while until one company had stock delivery issues and the other kept losing cheques. I watched my income disappear with both companies in a couple of months. Not sure what was worse watching my income disappear or not being able to resolve it! After this I resolved to do things I had some control over.
So to sum up yes MLM can and does work but it takes time and money. Make sure you pick a good MLM company though.

There have been some interesting posts in this thread.

I would venture to say those that said no to MLM probably didn't have a favorable experience when they tried it out.

For those that said yes to MLM they probably face obstacles but learned to overcome them.

Here's the deal with MLM, you can make great money and build great relationships.

But most people fail b/c they have the wrong mindset about it. They are not willing to acquire the right skill sets in order to make it. You've got to learn how to market, build a list, build a relationship with that list, and monetize on that list.

Sounds simple but not always easy to do. The top 3 skills that you will need (my personal opinion) are copywriting, marketing, and communication.

Now if you are not willing to acquire these skill sets and hang in there EVEN when things are not going your way, you might as well not consider it.

I agree with many of the above comments. I tried many MLM programs unsuccessfully and moved to my own product.

This is definitely the way to go, although I promote affiliate sites as well as my own and they can be extremely rewarding

As in all of this, the important thing is to build a list

You know, I am a part of 2 mlms myself: Global Domains Intl and the Spider Web System (more of a downline builder than a mlm). From my experiece, the key to success with mlm is to be able to effectively promote the products you are given and build up a huge downline (since naturally, the bigger your downline, the more money you can expect to make with mlm). Personally, I haven't had a whole lot of luck with GDI. I mainly get hits and leads, but have yet to get sign ups. The goal with GDI (I will use that as an example since that is the only one I am familiar with) is to refer new people to GDI who get a web hosting plan through them (customers become downline members, by the way), and there is a 5 level downline there. If you are planning to do mlm, here are some pointers you might want to consider:

    1. most do cost money to join (I am not aware of any free ones). The cheapest one I am aware of is GDI, but you can expect to make less from sales than you would with others. At most mlms though, there is a monthly fee that you have to pay, as well as getting a sales kit to help sell the product you are given.
    2. The key to success with mlms is that you have to be able to utilize the downline system and not only sell the products you are given, but encourage your downline to do the same.
    3. it helps to be familiar with affiliate marketing techniques and programs (since mlm is an advanced version of affiliate marketing).
    4. Mlms can be harder to promote than normal now days due to the many scam mlms out there and people that don't like mlm in general. Even legit ones tend to take flak from disgruntled members.

Thought that I would point those out.

Well unfortunately MLM has sort of gotten a bad name...why?

Because so many of these different websites promise you can get rich fast without doing anything...that's the problem.

It takes work as with anything else. You are going to have to acquire new skills and adjust who YOU are if you want to make money. And also, just chasing dollar bills will get you nowhere in the long run.

I think the internet gives most network marketers a better opportunity to reach different types of people without the face to face confrontation...but in turn you have to learn some levels of internet marketing and how to bring targeted visitors to your website...

That's key no matter what you promote.

Well we're very involved in network marketing and direct sales and are making a great six figure income from MLM alone. The real thing here is, it doesn't matter if you join an MLM company, if you create your own product, etc, etc, what matters is how you market YOURSELF in the community.

People join people, not businesses. The company you represent needs to be reliable and the product good, BUT that's not the main thing here. YOU are who they're joining.

Start seeing yourself as an expert, learn as much as you can but also implement.

    All the best!

I'll try to keep this brief.

The huge surge on the internet today is membership sites and affiliate programs.

When you are making a decision to get involved in a MLM program, follow the trend and look for a membership type program that has value. The old saying is still true. Would you still buy the product if there was no opportunity to make money with it?

When it comes to the adult industry, remember this; 60% of internet surfers are looking for adult content. I have a business where 99% of my income is offline yet I still maintain a website and blog.

I personally have not been involved in MLM since 2001 and chose to join one 2 weeks ago simply because there was too much money sitting on the table that I couldn't resist. The problem with those who fail in MLM is they are expecting their business to grow online. Now the product may operate online but most of your prospects are in the offline real world. I put up a simple postcard in a laundry mat and had 14 visitors in a few days and made more money than the monthly membership costs. I guess my point is if you are willing to do simple things that work, you simply cannot fail.

People are more likely to listen to a local contact before they trust an online offer.

A monthly fixed cost is more acceptable than buying products.

I think that the main issue for me with just about any affiliate marketing or mlm program is how do you get a good conversion rate? At GDI, for example, I mainly get hits and leads, but rarely get sign ups. Other people have tried to recruit me into other mlms (i.e., carbon copy pro, vemma builder, and now alive max), but I have decided I am not going to join any new programs until I get a good conversion rate going with my existing ones (i.e., GDI, tsws, clickbank, linkshare, etc). By the way, just out of curiousity, I've heard that one way to effectively promote MLM is by branding yourself. Do you know how I could go about branding myself. I am a total n00b at IM in general, but getting some useful advice can be helpful.
