Should I sell my book on amazon?

Just wrote a kindle. At first I thought I was going to give it away as a free report for prospects opting in to my list.
But now I got another idea.

Can I sell it on Amazon and still sell it (or give it away) on my website?
Does uploading a kindle to Amazon come with any legal restrictions? (Meaning, do they get the copyrights to the book?)

My plan was to start selling it on Amazon, and then have a headline "Get the book that costs 9.99 on Amazon for FREE", or something similar.

    I could be wrong here, but this is my understanding.

    If you're enrolled in KDP Select you cannot have your book selling/given away/etc anywhere else.

    However, if you're not in KDP Select, you can.

      This is correct. If you are enrolled in KDP Select, your book must be exclusive to Amazon. If they find it selling somewhere else, you'll get it taken out of KDP Select.

      If you never enroll it in KDP Select, or take it out after the first 30 days, you can sell it anywhere you want.

        You don't need to enroll in KDP Select. So yes, you can sell it on amazon and give it away free on your site.

    I do know that if you are enrolled in Kindle Select it allows you to give the book away for 5 days every 90 and allows people to check it out from their library. BUT it must be exclusive to Kindle. If you do not enroll then you can upload to Barnes/Noble or any other site as well as Amazon - including your own.

    However - YOU MUST READ their terms of service to determine if you want to so something about the advertising you are talking about - i.e. get it free here -selling on Amazon. THAT might not fly.

    Amazon does price matching. If they find your book for free somewhere else they will lower the price to $0 without telling you. I work for a publisher and this has happened to us a few times.

    As others have said, Amazon wants to have the lowest price.

    There is KDP and there is KDP Select - two different systems.

    With KDP Select, you must make it availiable only at Amazon for 90 days, during which time you can pick up to 5 days to make it free. Also with KDP Select, Amazon will let their Prime members read the book free (Prime members can chose 1 book a month as free.), but Amazon will pay you even for these free Prime member reads. I think it has been averaging around $1.80 per Prime Member downloads.

    A problem with KDP Select is you can not sell your book anywhere else for 90 days.

    With regular KDP you can also sell at B&N (ePub) for nook, at iBook, your own website, where ever, but you must list the price at Amazon as the lowest price. This means you can sell the book on your own website as long as it is priced higher than at Amazon.

    As was already mentioned, if you give it away free, Amazon will match that, and price it at $0. And if you are in the KDP Select system, Amazon will kick you out if they find it free at your site.

    There is a Kindle subforum here at the warriorforum. I don't remeber what the membership fee is, but it is tiny compared to the amount of information in that subforum. The "free" info from Bryan Kumar in that subforum is worth many times the price to join.

      It's $40 to join the Kindle subforum. I've heard pretty bad reviews though, at least from a non-n00b standpoint.

      It sounds very helpful you are completely new to Kindle though, so OP might want to check it out.
