How long did you take to become an internet marketing expert?

17 replies
I started caring about internet marketing in 2006 thanks to the statements of my first internet mentor, who wrote an ebook about how to make money online in 24 hours without having any contacts or previous knowledge.

He told me that I only had to be able to click a mouse to make money online.

I had the intention to promote my own products from the beginning. I became more than glad when I read that you can make money online with whatever topic you may desire, and you should follow your passion.

I started understanding the truth about internet marketing in 2007, when I created my first website and my first product. Since then I’m studying internet marketing.

The more I learn about this matter, more I see how much I ignore.

Internet marketing is not my field but I’m a business owner, so I must know how to work online. I’m surprised with the amount of knowledge one must have to really make money online.

Do you consider yourself an internet marketing expert?

How long did you take to get there?

    Well, I try to be humble in everything I do. This is why I will never be an 'expert.' Instead I focus on continuous learning. To earn more, you have to learn more. With that said, I have learned quite a bit but not enough to claim the title 'expert' or 'guru.'

    In fact, the guys who are very smart often end up working for dudes who are dumb as rocks. How did this happen? The dumb dudes focused on the RIGHT THINGS. Which one would you rather be?

    People that consider themselves "experts" are narcissistic amateurs. An individual doesn't get to call themselves an "expert" or "guru", that's something that other people get to decide.

    Now sure, you can know a lot about a certain subject (marketing in this case) and be "underground" and unknown, but "expertise" is really just a title, and is only given by third parties.

    In my opinion, expertise is an ideal to which you can strive for, but will never achieve. You're always a student because you can always learn something new about your field.

      ^^^ I agree!

      That said, it took me about:

      - 1 year to make my first sale
      - 3 years to decide there was no magic key
      - 5 years to really know what I was doing
      - 8 years to achieve financial independence

      Now in my 10th year, I am finally ready for my big challenge.

    There is so much to learn that nobody feels a real expert.

    Every point in internet marketing needs special attention, time, and a lot of work.

    * Email marketing

    * Finding JV partners or affiliates

    * Getting website traffic

    * Converting visitors into customers

    Etc…

    And, everything keeps changing online. What used to work two years ago doesn’t work today. You have to get adapted to all changes.

    This means that internet marketing depends on having the right knowledge, on being aware of all the modifications, on knowing how to deal with them, and a lot more. Nothing is simple.

    Emphasize the importance of knowledge, and point out all the complications.

    Many people still ignore the truth.

      I'll let you know.

      My first website went live in 1997. Every time I think I've got it covered, things change. When I don't change with them, I'm toast.

    I was expecting to see a few Warriors confirming that they are internet marketing experts and that they could arrive to this point after ten years of hard work or something like that.

    I believe that internet marketing is quite complicated.

    The image I had about the internet was totally false. If I knew everything I had to learn I wouldn’t be so enthusiastic in the beginning of my attempts.

    This enthusiasm is what the internet marketers of my time were selling with the simplified view they were presenting to ignorant internet users like me.

    Many internet marketers are still selling illusions online, but the truth is that internet marketing is a big challenge.

    Define "expert"

    I know people that make tens of thousands a month and they have no interest at all in "internet marketing"

      The best definition of 'expert' I've seen is:

      ex, as in has-been
      spurt, as in small drip under pressure.

      Not sure I want that applied to me even if I deserve it!

      Back to the subject though, while I agree with many that Internet marketing is so complex that it is hard for anyone to be an expert, that's only when you look at the field in its entirety. Like saying it is hard to be an expert in art history because there are thousands of artists to learn about.

      Making money online, however, is quite easy to master if you focus on one aspect of the huge subject that both appeals to you and that you have some skills at. People go wrong because they either don't focus at all and tink they have to learn 'all about' Internet marketing, or mistakenly focus on a part of the subject that they have no particular application for.

      It is not immodest for me to say that I AM an 'expert' at making money online in the narrow field of newsletter writing and publishing. That's how I make a healthy full-time living and have done for years. But in the related fields of niche website creation and blogging I am far from being an expert. I'm a journeyman at best.

      And in dozens of other areas of 'Internet marketing', like graphic design, PPC, Facebook and Twitter marketing or video production I am little more than a grass-green newbie, and may happily remain so forever.

    One can never be an expert on internet marketing. As technology changes, the IM world also changes so someone must need to study.
