Aggregating Content - Will This Land Me in Hot Water?

Hi guys,

OK, so I'm using my super awesome programming skills to write an unusual aggregator that provides real value to my readers and the sources as well.

If a site publishes an RSS feed, am I allowed to use the title, excerpt and link to the source's content? Things have changed so much recently, I just am not sure.

Apologies if this is a duplicate thread - I looked but so few people aggregate anymore...

Thanks!

  • I might not understand something about your questions, but as long as you follow each sites individual RSS rules you are fine, and most typically ask that you provide the title and a small portion of the "story/content" at your site, then link to their site for the full story/content. Sounds like that is what you are trying to do

Thank you Dave. Yes, you've got it right. I guess I'm being super cautious.

The sites all publish RSS feeds (and most do so prominently) but do not have an RSS policy in place. I'm hoping I don't have to contact them directly, but will do so if that's the right path.

Be very careful when making a decision to use an RSS feed. Especially for anything other than personal use.

Just because a site has an RSS feed, it does not (like many believe) give you the rights to use the feed on another site.

Check the TOS for RSS rules. Some will state that it's ok to use for any purpose while others may say it's for PERSONAL use only. AKA adding to an news reader etc.

If they don't state anything, you really need to assume the RSS feed is for personal use only. When you have even the slightest doubt, just drop the site an email and ask.
