Problem using FileZilla

I found a thread about the Auto Affiliate X and it seems that many warriors commented in a very favorable way, so I decided to go ahead and follow the lead. This is my very 1st experience with a website.

I got my domain name and web hosting from HostGator and downloaded the AAX zipped file. The directions given in the video said to use FileZilla to upload the files... and I'm stuck! FileZilla will not connect to the server.

Can anyone tell me if I'm doing anything wrong? These are the entries I made to try and make the connection:
Host: my domain name
Username: my HostGator username
Password: the password HostGator sent me in my welcome email.

Then I clicked on Quickconnect and nothing 'Connection timed out. Could not connect to the server.'

Is there a delay to access a newly created domain?

Yes it may take some time until the Nameserver change propagates. But in the confirmation email from Hostgator should be an address to access your domain immediately

Thanks. That's what I thought. I used the info for the Hostgator confirmation email. Using the domain name did not work, but later, I used the IP provided and that did the trick as far as uploading the files.
Nevertheless, if I try either name or IP to access the site on my browser, I get a 404 error: not found.

Hmm i think that you would be better off contacting your host support.

Maybe they are blocking some port or something.

    Cheers,

If you are unable to upload through Filezilla, you must know that there is an alternative method. You can simply upload your zip file using the File manger and unzip it. You dont always need a Filezilla to upload your website files. I used Filezilla only when I was very new to Website creation. I no longer use it and prefer to use the File Manager UI in Hostgator.

Sure, you can do that through the HG Cpanel -> File Manager, then locate the folder where you'd like to upload the zipped file and click extract.

Other than that, FTP should be working as well. And yes, you'll need to wait until the nameservers are updated globally.

I believe you have to wait some time for domain name propagation. Usually 24 - 48 hours. Anyway, try using the IP address instead.

That's what I did, after a while and it worked. BUT my site is still not showing on the web. Anymore input on that?

This is probably a dumb question, but did you upload your website files to the "public_html" folder on your server? You need to have an "index.html" or "index.php" file in that folder. That's the file that your browser will look for when you navigate to "YourWebsite.com".

If the website files are all in the correct location and you still don't see the changes, then clear your browser's cache and try again. If you still don't see the change, then it's possible that your domain name hasn't propagated yet (in that case, just wait until tomorrow and try again).

          Thanks Brandon.
Yes, the upload was done inside the "public_html" folder.
Yes, I have an "index.php" file in it.
I just got off chatting with HostGator and found-out that, even though the domain has been paid for and accepted, and even though I received the email containing the domain login info, actual registration isn't an immediate process and that due to large demand, contacting support is the best way to make it happen. My site is now registered and showing on the web. Squeeze page is not fully populated, but that's another story... Waiting for AAX to complete that part, I guess.
          Baby steps

This has to be ftp://mydomainname.com just in case that's the problem.

But if it isn't, Filezilla does have a great support forum.

When connecting to your server, it is much safer to use sftp rather than just ftp.

Information sent as ftp can be intercepted, and you really don't want someone getting hold of your login details.

This is easy to setup in Filezilla. Just click on site manager, then select "new site". Name this "yourdomain". Now just complete the following steps.

      1. Host: ftp.yourdomain.com
      2. Port: You can probably leave this blank.
      3. Protocol: Select "SFTP - SHH File Transer Protocol (From dropdown box)
      4. Login Type: Normal
      5. User: As provided by host
      6. Password As provided by host

Now just click O.K. and you've set up SFTP connection.

Hey, I`d recommend using the cpanel from host gator. It`s very simple to learn it and you can keep a life connection with one of the techs on hostgator to help you set everything up. It`s easier this way.

I have to strongly disagree with the people giving you advice to use the File Manager inside cPanel. That is a very old school way of doing things and certainly not as easy and efficient as FTP. You should always use FTP if possible. It's the standard way to transfer files from a PC to a server.

In what way is it more efficient?
