Would Google Bust Me If I Duplicated This......?

Hi Guys,

I was just wondering if anybody has ever provided product descriptions in their affiliate marketing campaigns, where you had to list NUMEROUS features and specifications which were repetitive with each product, and hopefully Google didn't consider that 'duplicate content'?

The reason being, is I do not wish to rehash the old proverbial 'duplicate content' issue, that has so often been the topic of numerous discussions over the years. However in this particular case, where a person really hasn't got much of a choice, if at all, to write down in 'their own words' tons of facts and figures which are usually the case with product specs and features. (eg; height, dimensions, parts, colours, etc. etc.)

It's not like articles and general text, where you can certainly rewrite such pieces rather easily in your own words, so it's not considered duplicated. However concerning product's specs and features, where there is really no room for altering it - your thoughts? - especially if you have several models, whose specs are similar, with just ever so slight differences?

Have any of you gone ahead and just placed 'exactly' what your product's specs are that was on the manufacturers page, without any slaps or repercussions from Google? Is copying and pasting ONLY in this particular regard considered okay and ethical?

I've got several products which necessitates placing loads of specs and features related to the products, but rewriting these in my own words is virtually impossible, due to the nature of the text, that is, it's mainly just facts and figures, as opposed to an editorial or story.

Thanks a bunch for listening and I really appreciate your thoughts : )

This has been a problem for me before for websites I have done for car dealers (inventory listings).

Google will simply ignore those pages (they will usually end up in the supplemental index). They do not penalize duplicate content on your site - they just ignore it.

I think you should try automatic article rewriter ... as I remember, in last weeks there was another discussion about quality of those rewriting products.

In our company we never use duplicates, because we heard, that google can lower your rating if you use often duplicated articles. ... maybe it is not true, but we don't even try it, because it has no sence to risk good position on google with duplicated content

It wouldn't make sense to penalize your entire site if you have just a few pages of duplicate content. What is your unique to duplicate content ratio?

I appreciate your answer guys, but Jason, respectfully, I'm not too sure if agree with you that Google ignores dupe content on your site...in fact, I believe it's quite the opposite.

However, if you are strictly referring to 'specs, features, and inventory-oriented content of products', then I would take that as encouraging, yet it still leaves me wondering...hmmm?

Tyrus, thanks for your question, but it's this new site that's still in development, therefore I haven't checked the ratio as of yet. I would already guess however it's not good, because of the several similar products on the pages, yes they all differ to some degree yet, ever so slightly, but I feel it would still be in my best interest to include all the specs and features for each product, no matter how similar, in order to give quality and 'complete' info to the visitors - yes? no?

Heck, the manufacturers website that I'm getting all this info from (plus thousands of others as well I'm sure), has basically the same specs and features strewn all over their site related to their merchandise, (with the odd difference - eg; dimensions, colour, price, etc),and they seem to be doing fine, hence my inquiry, that is if I'm missing something here?

What you're missing is defining the type of site you are building. Is it a merchant or storefront site?

The answers you are getting focus on "content sites" rather than a site selling physical products. If specifications exist for a product and are important to getting sales, of course you include them - and you can't rewrite or spin them as they are "specific" to that product.

Are you building an html site? Using WP or Joomla? Is the entire site a listing of products only or are reviews/comments of your own included?

          Hi Kay,

Thanks for your answer......I'm building a Wordpress affiliate site that is promoting certain kitchen appliances and these products are very similar in nature, but of course they do have their differences, hence having various models, but still of the same item/brand.

They have loads of specs and features and I couldn't imagine not including ALL of that info related to each product - I feel I would truly have to mention all that the product has, so the visitor knows full well what the item consists of down to the last button and switch.

Therefore, I've got 8 products - all much the same, but different levels of quality, but all in all, with the exception of just a few deviations, the info remains the same on all of the items - hence my quandary. So basically I would have 8 pages (yes the product descriptions are quite lengthy to fit all 8 items on one page), with basically the same content, that can't really be replaced because of the specifics involved.

That makes sense - but you can add some text comments. Perhaps a list of pros and cons or what advantage that product has over others you have listed. That would add some unique content even if it were just a short paragraph either introducing the product or as comment below the specs listed for each.

Or as it's a blog, if you plan to post to the blog in addition to listing the products, that helps with promotion of the site.
