I have enabled whoisguard on an existing domain (two years old).

When I search for this domain at whois.domaintools.com the Whois History option says there are 12 records archived and that these 'publish domain name ownership data'. I assume that this is a general statement for Whois History and that it won't reveal ownership when whoisguard is enabled.

Is that correct ?

I would assume putting whoisguard on a domain that was previously public probably won't achieve much. Sure, if people use some of the proper whois databases to search your domain now they are likely to see the privacy notice but I am certain there would be a ton of records out there (and already indexed in the search engines) that have your old details on them and those records will be there to stay.

I have found plenty of owners of private domains in this exact same way by searching for old copies of the whois records and they are usually quite easy to find.

The best way is to use privacy guard right from the beginning.

Yup. DomainTools only caches WHOIS records they were able to "see" that time,
and not "pierce" thru any WHOIS privacy service.

There are several sites which archive the entire history of domains - ownership, contacts, name servers, ips, etc.

You can hide from now on, but unless you get all these sites to agree to delete your data (impossible), then your old data is out there.
