Ever Wonder Why Your Step By Step Guide Fails You?

If you're like most marketers, you've bought step by step guides to help you
with some aspect of running your business or even just starting a business.

If you're like most marketers, you've probably noticed that after following each
of the steps, you didn't get very good results and you scratch your head and
wonder why.

I'm going to explain why in a relatively short post that will just get right to the
point.

Let's say you've just gotten a step by step guide on how to make money with
videos.

You go through all the steps. You leave nothing out. You then put up your
video and nothing happens. No money.

Why?

You need to look at each step in the process and ask yourself this one very
simple question.

"Does any step require me to do any independent thought?"

If the answer is yes, then there is that margin for error.

Let's take the video example. Let's for argument sake say that one of the
steps says.

Step 4 - Gather relevant keywords to your video and include them in the
tags.

Well, right there, what's relevant? If the tutorial is strictly on creating
videos and NOT on keyword research, then you're going to need to go to
another source to determine how to find relevant keywords.

And the above is a very simple example.

Imagine compounding the problem with a procedure that is quite complex.
You may have all the "steps" but how much outside knowledge are you going
to need to have in order to successfully execute those steps?

That is why so many "step by step" guides fail and why thinking that getting
one is going to guarantee you success.

In short, there is just no such thing as "simple enough for a monkey to do."

So the simple warning with this thread is this. Don't look for an easy step by
step solution, no matter how convincing it may sound. Understand that
nobody can account for your current knowledge or lack thereof.

Naturally, the simpler a procedure is, the greater the chance that you can
follow it and see success.

For example.

Hanging a picture.

Step 1 - Get a hammer and nail
Step 2 - Hammer the nail into the wall
Step 3 - Hang the picture on the nail. (Make sure the picture has a string
across the back of it)

Can somebody screw that up? I know I can. I've wrecked more nails than
you imagine and ended up with holes in my wall that were too big for a nail
afterwards and had to start over.

Nothing is fool proof, though I wish that were true.

Understand going in that there is going to be thought involved.

We are NOT monkeys.

So, what can you add to this? Can you think of something that can make
that process a little better and more likely to result in success?

I'm curious to know what YOU think.

    Hi Steven,
I suspect that there are too many step by step guides detailing procedures which have never made the author any real money. If they have made any money its been from selling the step by step guide.
Even when the product is worthy and following the guide should lead to the user making money, many users will have moved on to the next shiny object before they've given it sufficient chance to work for them.

  • This is the exact reason for TESTING.

I've created a product, and spent 15 months in testing with real, actual people. (Aside from myself - because I knew it worked for myself) Once it was refined - I then did my 'hard launch'.

This is a reason for R&D, focus groups, testing, etc.

However, even after all of that, you still get the 'monkey' to screw it up.

Step-by-step guides can be great, but they NEVER do more than 80% of the work for you...

You've gotta use some independent thought and testing, always!

The reason being that step-by-step guides will rarely ever give you the EXACT NICHE to target. They may give you general niches or hundreds of 'unique' ideas to get started with, but in the end you've gotta select the niche yourself.

And as for generating traffic, no matter what the guide shows you to do, there will always be variables and tweaks you'll have to make along the way.

Personally, I LOVE the fact that there's NO such thing as a complete 'step-by-step, no thinking involved solution' ... this keeps competition less and the smarter players rise to the top.

Rarely there's a true step-by-step solution that comes along...but then its gets saturated FAST and the method becomes way less effective.

  • Well...

Maybe if someone if offering a "step-by-step" guide, the could compile a list of other products/solutions to help their customer get the most out of their guide.

    Using your video example,

The guide is how to sell through videos.

There is an accompanying "resource guide" that goes along with the step-by-step video guide that offers information/solutions to any potential problems a customer might run into.

So, Step 4 - Find relevant keywords. The customer has no idea how to find relevant keywords, or even what a keyword is. The head on over to the "resource" guide that you published along with your step-by-step guide, head down to the "Step 4" chapter, and they find links to more information and even affiliate links to other products that explain this concept. You can even try to make a deal with the owner of a "relevant keyword finding guide" and offer a discounted price, etc...

Just something that may be effective, and could potentially bring in a little more income on the side while further educating your customer.

    I get your point steven,

But when you just passed for your drivers licence, isn't that the point when you REALLY start learning how to drive a car?

You learn how to drive a car step, by step. Now you're capable to drive. Should you step into a nascar? hell no!

You learn marketing step by step. After a while you're capable to make money online. Once you know how to market effectively, is the starting point you really learn how to make a lot of money online.

    That's just my opinion.

A couple of decades ago I taught English Comp, and one of the standard assignments was to write something interesting and easy-to-follow on how to do something.

This is surprisingly difficult. However, there are some good ways to make it easier for people to follow your instructions. One key step is to imagine all the ways in which the process could go wrong, and add clues to head those off.

It's also important to imagine your audience. For example, you might write instructions on how to hang a picture differently if you have carpenters in mind, or art gallery owners, or high-end interior decorators, or college students.

    Hanging a picture. (my method)

    1. Make cardboard Template the size of picture
    2. stick Blu-tac on one side to check wall placement
    3. Measure distance from top of picture to hanging point on string
    4. Transpose this distance from top of template, measure down, put pencil mark on wall
    5. Tap wall with knuckle to check for loose plaster
    6. Unless you know for certain, check for electric wires and pipes behind plaster
    7. Get out trusty Black and Decker fitted with No6 Masonry bit
    8. Get vacumn cleaner with extension hose to hold under the hole while drilling
    9. (if you haven't got a vacuum cleaner use a dustpan)
    10. With vacuum cleaner on, and pipe just under the hole. Drill hole 4mm deeper than the wallplug you will be using (governed by size of drill bit)
    11. Put wallplug in hole, tap in flush with with screwdriver handle.
    12. Screw in domehead screw with washer attached, leave proud of wall, enough to take string.
    13. Hang picture put the string behind the washer.
    My pictures never fall off

Nor do my products get launched.

In the last 6 months I have put together 4 PDF's with as much detail as the picture hanging example above. Trouble is they are all ended up over 400 pages long. Lol.
I was going to WSO them but I'm not sure most Warriors would appreciate such weighty tomes and fall asleep before the end,

well , i think most step by step guides need course correction after repeated failures to get to a process that work for you, however the guides don't mention the keep trying part, it depends on the perseverance of the person trying the steps.....

    cheers

    Hi Steven,

Thank you for sharing your valuable content. I personally feel that most of the guides gives good big picture view of the system but the real learning only starts when we start to implement the knowledge that we have learn.

It is just like driving a car, we can watch the video many times but still not able to drive a car until we have physically go and learn it. Failure is part of the process and I will simply just get over it and start again.

Even the creator of the guide doesn't get it right 100% of the time.

If you've got any IM experience then you'll know that not every campaign you throw up will be a runaway success...

...So if the creator of these "step by step" guides CAN'T get it right 100% of time, then the follower is even less likely to get it right... Well first time anyway.

All you can do is give the follower of your "step by step guide" the most detailed and comprehensive guide you can, while explaining there is (and always will be) margin for error and that is to be totally expected... Even if you're a seasoned vet.
