I am skilled at SEO, building WP sites, I can write quality content and copywrite. What should I do?

As the title says, I have extensive knowledge of all things IM. Over the last 3 years I have built many websites for friends and family, I have handled SEO for many people, and I am now writing quality content for a few clients and on fiverr.

But why am I still working for other people and not making my own business? The most basic and obvious answer is that I simply cannot find a passion that I could make an online business out of.

Not sure what kind of answers I will get from this, but WF always comes up with something useful. Did anyone else reach this stage in their IM journey before?

Any Advice?

Well, you have answered your question yourself..

You have all the knowledge and skills.... the only thing you lack is passion, so have some passion and dedication in you and you will be a top man....

Apart from SEO, I lack everything such as writing professionally, building sites, technical knowledge but I have dedication and passion in me and I am extremely happy with I am doing and what I am earning....

    Good luck

    Hey Ben,

I think you really could go one of two routes:

    1) Build up the site, bring in traffic, show some sort of income... then FLIP IT. Decent money and sites DO sell on flippa if they show a profit (as I've unfortunately learned the hard way haha)

    2) Build up a site that brings in some money via passive income (meaning you don't do much work) and have a whole network. Monetize. Rinse/repeat.

Even if you have tons of skills, without passion and motivation these skills will be useless.

But why am I still working for other people and not making my own business?
Because you need to charge for your work.

Where is your business? Do you have a page to reference me to that shows your services and charges?

How are you conducting your own marketing strategy to sell what you offer?

        Hi Jill

I am currently (Literally right now) in the process of building a site to offer further services to my clients, hopefully at better pricing than I get on fiverr. But this is only to try and increase my income a bit, I still want to eventually stop doing the work for everyone else and use my skills to benefit me.

I love this guy and have read both of his books and the minute I read your post I thought of this blog post he posted:

    What Passion Is Not

He talks about the difference of what passion is and what is not. I hope you like it.

From reading your post, you like helping other people. Make this your passion.

      Go into joint ventures.

Provide the services others don't have to complete projects.

Let them come up with the ideas and passions and use your skills to get projects finished.

For every project that is finished there are probably 100 incomplete projects on peoples shelves.

Be the go to guy who gets things finished.

I would suggest you sell your service on fiverr, you don't need to worry about traffic that way. You can do simple stuff that wont take much time and get paid for it.

How have you marketed your services in the past? How are you marketing them right now? I would set up a site dedicated to offering your SEO services. If not that, create a quick ebook (along with backend products), and drive traffic to it, and get sales. Hopefully this doesn't sound daunting to you - because it isn't.

      Hi
since you are already skilled with WP, SEO i think you can consider this route

      1. create a WP plugin which is free for customers with a back end sale for full version and more features

      2. you can easily outsource WP plugin creation as well , your expertise will help greatly in defining the product (check fiverr.com)

how to find what WP plugin to make ? - you can research forums and internet for market needs e.g what is it that folks on WP are looking to do, are there existing plugins available ? can you make a better one (don't have to go for a unique idea every time) ...a very simple plugin (such as create awesome landing pages with SEO integrated) can be a big success

      hope this helps

      cheers

Can you name 3-5 passions that excite you?

Have you tried entering them in the Google keyword tool?

Are you *really* sure you can't make a business out of your passion? Or are you dismissing the idea because you think its not possible, or that there are more "lucrative niches"?

For instance, I know for a fact that if I put all the effort I do into a lucrative niche blog about life insurance, that I do into my royalty free music site, I would make 4x a month what I do in AdSense. I had a one page life insurance site that paid many dollars per click, it was unreal.

However, I also know for a fact that I could not bring myself to waste hours in my day, of the life I am given, to even begin to make content about life insurance. I tried, I just can't, its just devoid of any meaning or feeling for me.

But its not a choice to make less money, its a choice to act on what I really want to be doing with my next moment. Life its just made up of next moments.

Go for exciting. Go for real, fun, genuine. Think big.

Who are you really, really jealous of? Like you can't even stand to think about that person. What do they do? That will point you in the right direction.

Build an authority site, rank it, then hold it there through your seo stuff.

Do it over and over and over, plus you can sell a few once you have a good passive income.

It's what I do, and it works well.

One thing I learned to do is take some time off from what I do day in and day out and try something new. Then I come back to what I really like to do and find my passion again.

Yeah, you have answered your question by yourself.

You can completely set up your own business site and promote it with your skills. But without passion, you can't do it.

    All good advice.

I am in the process of starting up a site to offer more of my services, but I have a feeling that will take a while to get going.

Does anyone know of a way that I can use my skills to make some more money right now? Other than Fiverr as I am already doing that.

    Thanks

Here are all the things I do to get writing gigs:

      1. apply to freelance gigs I find on craigslist, problogger, bloggingjobs, etc

      2. promote my writing website using various methods, craigslist ads always give me a few leads

      3. relevant SEO for my writing services website

      4. sites like thecontentauthority and textbroker provide me with a way to fill in any income gaps when I have nothing else going on

Things I am going to start doing

      1. Send pitch letters to businesses, pr firms, marketing firms

      2. offer a free eBook on my site for signups, which I will then consider leads

      3. start selling PLR products

I don't use the outsourcing sites. It is too hard to get paid for my time. I've been a professional writer for over ten years and can't stomach the low rates. There's just so much competition and writers come from all over the world.

Businesses really need writers who specialize in online writing and they're the ones that pay what the writing is worth.

I have a gig up on fiverr but that doesn't get any bites either. Not that I am sad. $4 per article is NOT a good rate.

First of since you're doing all the things you said i think you are passioned
You probably making some money with the way you're working and your in your comfort zone! Things start to happen when you step out of that zone and when your're hungry enough.. its like how bad do you want it
One the that helped me is to write down your goals so you have something to look for and the motivation and passion will kick in..

Have you tried other freelance sites like odesk elance freelancer?

Hi Ben! I'm just beginning (aka not even started) at IM but I had the same concern as you before I "started".

I decided to do a "mind map" of all the stuff that I could do based on my "hobbies". For example, if you like traveling, there is probably a lot of stuff online that you can do. Do you like to walk? Do you like to play piano? Do you find any interest in stamps?

Anyway, the way I see it, if you want to make a big authority site, maybe you need a real passion. If you want to make a smaller site, a hobby could work (I hope).

Summary : try a mind map The way I did it, the higher level of "ideas" was what I could do online, then after you start to go deeper in your hobbies.

    For example :
    - Authority Website (first level)
    - Website about travel (2nd level)
    - Website about traveling to England (3nd level)
    - Website about restaurant guides for travellers in England (4th level)

If you do this, I'm sure you'll have more ideas than you need.

    Good luck!

I like this idea. I may not have the passion to build an authority site, but I have plenty of little hobbies that I could build niche sites about.

Good advice, I shall think about it. Thanks

What you should do is build a high quality website inside of a niche that you are passionate about and then set up a squeeze page, offer a high quality freebie, and then drive traffic to that squeeze page while building your list. And then you can simply focus on marketing to your list and continuing to build your list and maybe even begin selling solo ads to make even more money.

You can save and invest from your gig income to build your own business empire. You know more potential benefits from sites, like affiliate site with recurring commission, adsense site with steady monthly clicks and e-commerce for repeat orders, etc.
