Expired Wordpress hosted domain

Hey all! I had a friend pass away recently and she was writing a blog about cancer and her experiences etc. She did the blog through wordpress, and her family is asking me to host it for them so they can keep it online etc. Problem is, the domain expired a couple of weeks ago, and wordpress is stating that we have to pay 106.00 to re-register it (includes their 80.00 late fee, boils my BLOOD!!). What I was planning to do was simply register the domain and host it on my server, but wordpress registered it themselves for a year of course banking on the 80.00 late fee.

Anyone experience this before? Any suggestions on what I can legally do to get control of the domain (since it's her unique domain) for the NON-extorted price?

Unfortunately this is one of the kind of things that tends to happen when you register a domain through the hosting company, rather than keeping those two functions separate.

In the circumstances, I think all you can try is explaining the situation, and the facts, to WordPress, perhaps offering them something like $25, and seeing whether they're willing, in the circumstances, to be sympathetic about it. If they're really not, I think there's probably nothing you can really do about it, because they are presumably, at the moment, the perfectly lawful registrant of the domain? They do provide a lot of free services/hosting, after all, and perhaps they regard themselves as "entitled" to the occasional payments in compensation for that?

The domain seems to have gone into the redemption period.

If the domain is in fact in the redemption period state, this is what happens when a domain is allowed to expire - regardless of where the domain is registered.

OP is actually getting a good deal, IMO. Namecheap, for instance, charges $200 (plus the renewal cost for the domain) to save a domain once it has reached redemption period status. What is domain redemption status? (Registration/Renewal Questions)

Do you need to keep it with the same domain name? You have the option to get the content and host it with another domain name for the usual rates.

BTW, I don't think your assumption about Wordpress registering it for another year is correct. Who is the ICANN approved registrar in this case? Even if you use wordpress for registration, they are supposed to act as an agent and the domain will be registered in the name of the person who pays. That can not be changed even after the domain is expired, before it become available for public. Make sure that you get the info correct or post the domain name here for experts to cross check.

I'm sorry but no domain costs $100 to re-register.

Find out where the domain was hosted and go directly to them.

You are just being conned by someone trying to take advantage. I've had plenty of those letters.
