I want to start doing opt-in email marketing. I've never done much of this. FOr a long time I thought a list was something that was manually done. I thought people would opt in and then the owner of the site would just bomb em with emails now and then. But I've learned more. I realize its a great way to create a relationship, add value, and get more sales But my problem is this: How do I know what type of page works? Do I do a: 1) Squeeze > Sales Page 2) Sales Page with Opt-IN box within it or 3) Squeeze > Present > Sales Page or 4) Squeeze > Present > sales page (via email) ? Where can I find out about thse processes? What WSO / Guru / Product speaks about these? I am sure its a matter of testing. I am sure that is what I am gonna hear. but I'd like to do the best I can with the first shot here.. Best, The Oilman |

Hi Oilman It’s great that you have realised that a list is much more powerful than a group of names that you ‘bombard’ with offers. Once you have developed a list you want to cultivate and share knowledge with your members. A good list is worth it’s weight gold. As you have outlined there are a number of different ways you can setup your opt-in page, depending on your end goal. Giving away a free gift (something of value and not just some crappy ebook) is always a good way to start. Most people will be happy to provide their email address to receive a valuable free gift. Once you have your system in place, you will then want to keep educating your members with relevant info. You will build a good relationship with them and then, when you come to make them an offer they will be more receptive and responsive. Hope this helps. Nathan |

Thanks Nathan But do you know where I can find any info on how these all work? Like -- are there any guides that display how they work? |

I'm pretty sure Chris Rempel has a product on list building. It's somewhere in the 14.95 to 24.95 range. Or else you can always join one of those free giveaways and download a book about it. |

If you can afford it, invest in the Marketing Sherpa Landing Page Handbook. Lots of excellent advice on how to craft a real landing page that gets good results (of course you'll have to do a good deal of split testing but you would do that anyway, right?) |

Tellman Knudson and Shawn Casey's site the List Building Club has one of the most systematic, thorough training programs on how to build a list (actually, it's the best I've seen). It covers how to use AWeber, how to set up a squeeze page, how to get traffic, how to write effective email copy, and a bunch of other stuff. The first 30 days are free. To be honest, I had a bit of a bad taste in mouth from being on Shawn Casey's list in the past, but I was genuinely impressed with the Listbuilding Club. |

The SEOMoz guys have some really good info on site structure for SEO, and on how Google sees the web. They do a regular video series called Whiteboard Friday on, err... every Friday that is well worth checking out. |

What I have found works best is... Cold traffic (PPC, ads, first time SEO traffic) ---> Squeeze ---> Sales page where the follow-up sequence is critical to overall conversion Warm traffic (existing list, blog, forum, etc...) ----> Special content ---> Squeeze (if you want to create a sub-list) -----> sales page Of course there are some variations on this depending on what you are marketing - if it is an event, then the squeeze may just send them to a signup form and your selling occurs within the event. Opt-in's within sales pages have very limited effectiveness. Jeff Quote:
