The Power of Article Marketing

Since I've joined the forum I have seen many posts about how wonderful article marketing is, but I would just like to share one of my personal experiences with it in hopes that it helps someone out.

I started a website at the end of last year. It is a niche health site with a couple different affiliate products on it. In order to jump start some traffic I decided to write articles 1-2 per day for about a month. This wasn't all that hard since I already knew about the niche and with a little extra research I could write an article in about 10-15 minutes.

After that month I did maintenance article marketing by posting maybe 1-2 articles per week. The site now brings me about $200-$300 per month and growing. The site even had a 70 dollar day last week. Some of the traffic coming in now is organic search engine traffic but still, I would say 90% is article traffic.

Here is a screen shot from some January articles from EZA:

It is pretty awesome to think that for the top article I spent 15 minutes of my time and already have 600 clicks and counting. Of course one of the articles only has 7 clicks too - but the average overall here is about 121 clicks per article and counting.

Article marketing does work!

Here is basically what I did:
I posted my website using wordpress. I spent one day doing keyword research using the free google Adwords tool. I searched for low competition and sometimes long tail keywords. I made a list and wrote my articles around one keyword at a time. I mentioned my keyword in the title and sometimes just once in the body. I usually try to have the keyword 2 or 3 times in the body though.

And that is basically it! I've recently expanded to try and take on a couple similar niches and my income is growing. I just wanted to prove that it doesn't have to be complicated. I mean it might help taking an article marketing course or doing research but if you just take the time to write you will see results!

The power of article marketing is profound and very much documented over and over in several places everywhere on the web. Many people have began and utilize the power of article marketing to make their money online. If you have just a little bit of patience then you will be rewarded with article marketing, but it will not happen over night.
    That is for sure.
    Remember,
You give what you get and get what you give thats the way its always been

Thanks Ken. It is always puzzling to me when I read posts about people trying IM for many months or years without any sales. I always wonder what they have tried doing.

Very inspirational! And Resentful, I think article marketing can be counted as a traditional method of Internet marketing at the moment.

Actually I usually pretty much only submit to EZA. Sometimes I'll take the time to submit to some of the others like Go Articles and ArticlesBase but there I would be mainly looking for the backlink.

EZA seems like the only good one to generate lots of traffic.

And yes, article marketing is traditional I would think. And it is always a good idea to use more than one method in case something stops working.

What do you contribute your success to in getting such a high click through rate with your articles? Is it popularity of your topic, is it a stimulating resource box, your articles ability to resonate with your readers? Any thoughts?

I studied other people's resource boxes but I still think I could probably use work in that area.

The niche is one that tends to get people to want to solve their problem right away.

But I've also gotten my articles into the top published and top viewed lists that are at the bottom of all articles. That can help too but that's only for relatively temporary traffic.

These articles are still somewhat new but I'm hoping that the good keyword research will keep bringing traffic to them for a long time to come.

    Lindsay,

    Well done!

I actually wrote my first article for an article directory in 2001, the site is still there today.

Quite interesting, though You only submit to one directory, I personally use 25 targeted top directories. Maybe you want to expand a little?

For those starting out EZA (Ezinearticles.com) is the best place to start!

Jon, Thanks for the tip! I know my business plans could use expansion in a number of ways but I still wanted to prove to everyone that even when you keep it simple - like just writing a few articles for one directory that you can generate sales.

Exactly, confusion and too many options is the stumbling block for many and no action is taken. This is a great thread for really showing that this is a non-convoluted method for achieving residual income.

    Excellent success Lindsay, congrats!

It was a bit easier for you because you are a writer. For many it is difficult to follow through on writing and it's hard to write 2 articles a day for a full month.

However, it's not really necessary you write all articles yourself. It's just important to submit articles consistently.

So if you are stuck writing many articles, just outsource the writing.

Gunter, you are right that the writing may have come a little more easily to me since I do write a lot. And yes, outsourcing is an option and I feel that even if you are struggling with writing that you can get better. Also when all of your articles are in the same niche it is bound to get easier as you write more articles. Now these 17 articles from the screen shot only took me about two weeks but I think even if they took longer to write each day or took a month instead that it would still be profitable.

You're right. Article marketing isn't the most fun thing in the world. But it works amazingly well.

Once you create a system that you're "rinsing and repeating"... (which it sounds like you've got a pretty good one already), you should think about outsourcing it to someone. Article marketing is one of the best things you can outsource once you've got a system that works because as I'm sure you've found out... it's not rocket science. It just takes some persistence and a little time to start seeing great results from building those backlinks.

    keep up the good work,
    Matt

This is true. And at times it can be boring but I actually like writing my own articles. I obviously see that for true growth there is only so much I can do completely on my own. I'm sure I'll have to do at least some outsourcing eventually.

This is really interesting. It is all significant to me that 90 percent of the traffic is from the articles and 10 percent to the site pages. It seems to mean that the ezinearticles are stronger than the site pages. That makes sense due to the high pr of ezinearticles but I wonder if after a few more months the site pages will also show up high in engines. Have you tried more backlinking to test this?

    Debbie

Yes I am starting to do more with backlinking and the organic traffic is going up too. I just wanted to show how article marketing alone could give the site a good jumpstart. Whereas when I started I had some base content and wrote article after article for about a month - I now write an article here or there but focus more on site content and linking.

I wonder...how do you earn money by writing an article or you were actually writing a persuasion article to promote a products and get the commission?

    Is it this like SEO?

It is SEO in the sense that you are trying to rank for certain keywords.

Some articles are persuasive pieces. However, these were in a health niche. So I basically provide certain overall information and at the end they were guided to click if they wanted more information. The page they then land on is a page that gives an overview of a few products that would solve their problem.

Long term, article marketing is one of the absolute best SEO practices for building backlinks. As Lindsay mentioned, in the short term you can expect to get some traffic from the major article directories that you submit to. However, for long term success in organic search listings (which is what will get you MAJOR traffic), you should concentrate on building those backlinks. And submitting articles to these directories, other sites, and to large blog networks will is in my opinion one of the absolute best things you can do with your "SEO time".

Article writing is an excellent way to build long-term success online. It's not something that will explode your traffic overnight (but it may) but a slow and consistent way to build a steady stream of income from your site.

      Good information from Matt:

    Lindsay,

Can you say how big the site is and how often you update it? I have one site that isn't doing much unless I keep submitting articles to ezinearticles. It may because they words were too competitive so they fall off page 1 quickly.

I don't have exact numbers but I would say today it has maybe 80 articles promoting it in EZA. It is set up through wordpress so the blog itself probably has something like 50 posts now. I just randomly write an EZA article here or there, update the blog once a week or so and work on backlinking.

I don't spend a whole lot of time on it since I'm trying to do it with other blogs but perhaps I should!

Article marketing... It's an art, a science, and it can even be fun.

I try to make a bit of a game out of tracking which articles get the most views, clickthroughs etc., and experiment with it. (and also how different article directories compare. They don't all like the same stuff, so if EZA readers aren't too thrilled about an article, sometimes those at Amazines love it. Happened with one in particular, which was VERY slow at EZA and the one (even to date or at least last time I checked) with the most views at Amazines!

Every once and again, I get lucky too. One time, I suddenly got a bunch of orders within a day or two for one of my ebooks! An article I had written about the subject was apparently picked up by a big ezine or something and well, suddenly I had a flurry of happy PayPal messages. Wish this happened more often though!

      That's Awesome!

Makes me want to get back to writing more myself.

Unfortunately I have about 100 different webpages I need to write which must take priority.

I've been thinking of outsourcing some of my articles since I simply don't have the time for it anymore.

Anyone had any luck outsourcing? I've seen some pretty pathetic articles out their and I presume they are of the outsourced variety.
