Linking to YouTube videos - What are the benefits?

Also what are the disadvantages if there are any?

What I'm getting at is simple. Will linking to someone else's video improve your site ranking and so on?

What benefits will it have versus making your own video.

Would love to hear everyone's opinion.

Thanks,
Aaron.

I don't think linking to someone else's video from your website will help you rank.. Doesn't make any sense to me that way.

As for making your own video, well that way you can better brand yourself and your website!

I didn't know you can rank well just by linking to youtube videos  1st time I hear that give us more info about this stuff hehe...

But it does make sense because seo plugins give a high-score(lack of word hehe) for linking to other authority sites in posts. hmmmm...

I link out quite a bit to relevant material on my blog. Say your article is about German Shepherd dog training and you hyperlink the keyword to a really popular YouTube video. First off your telling Google that your site is not selfish. Ever been to a site that traps you in?! Never lets your browsing experience venture anywhere but inside that website. Linking out to relevant info from your site creates a great user experience. Google and others are in the business of creating a great user experience.

Linking out to YouTube videos is a good thing in my opinion.

      Hope that makes sense.

Yep, I totally agree with all you said. I also think it's a good thing to link to Youtube videos.

Linking to other youtube videos doesn't really help you. The owner of the video gets all the credit here. If you are really thinking about using youtube videos, creating one will be better for your exposure and promotion.

A benefit of linking to a video verses making your own would depend on the quality of the video vs your own. As for linking to someone elses video if it helps your site to provide quality content for your visitor it could help in the SERPs by reducing the bounce rate and having them stay longer, and generating more social signals (likes, social sharing, etc.) which generates more traffic, bookmarks, etc. Think "content curation" (huge buzzword a short time ago) like Huffington post for example, not videos, but their using other peoples content.

But rather than link to the video I'd rather embed it into my site.

I think I remember Chris Farrell recommending putting up a video of an authority figure in a particular niche whenever you wrote a blog post to give yourself credibilty when you're starting out.

Our testing has not shown any substantial benefit of linking to Youtube videos - in fact much of our top ranking content does not.

However, there are two things we like to do with Youtube

    1. Link to our own videos gives them more exposure giving us multiple additional chances to get exposure to our videos on Youtube

    2. I do like to embed other people's videos where they are highly relevant to my market AND that will help get discussions rolling...sharing a big name video, stating our views and then asking for comments works well to get your market engaged and used to participating on your blog

One benefit is to add info, entertainment and instructions for the benefit of your page visitors.

Another is to take advantage of popular, viral and trending videos. For example, if there's a popular Justin Bieber video, instead of posting a link to the video on YT using your Facebook and Twitter accounts, embed the video on your own page and send traffic to your own site.

Yet another reason to use other peoples' videos is when you can't make a similar one yourself, for example a NASA video of Mars, which is probably difficult for you to do yourself.

I tend to add my YouTube videos to my related blog posts.
Unsure if it has any benefit though.

I like to link to other people's videos, their blogs, reports, ebooks and so on if it adds value to my readers. What goes around comes around. Following the "Golden Rule" is always a good idea on the Internet and off of it.

    Hi,
one and and only disadvantage :-
if you only Link with text then people will out of your site clicking on that link

    advantage and best practice
1:- embed video at your blog if its relevant to your blog post
People we will spend more time on your site ( good for you and good as per seo point of view)
2:- This is marketing and forced ranking practices like " 10 ten music video " "10 ten your niche product review " (
you will find this kind of search at Google and they are raking well .

about making your own video , yes its good to have your own video and work on it to get rank but always provide quality information on video so that people love to watch your video .

It would be much better for you,
    a) embed the 3rd party video in your site or
    b) put your own video on YouTube and link to it.
