Hello warriors,

I am in the process of making a website, and I just cant decide what to do with the domain name.I am on the fence about using a .net instead of a .com. The flip side is I can't afford to spend over 50$ on a domain name, and .coms are all taken. Should I try to find an expired/deleted 5-6 letter .com that I can brand, or should I use my .net? I've researched but I am just trying to get some input from you successful warriors because I hold you guys in higher regard than most "authoritys" online. Thanks for the input fellas.

(The website is a offshoot of craigslist for my local area, I would use my area in the name for more targeted but if it expands I didn't want to limit myself)

    Unpleasantry,

You could tell us what's the purpose of your site. "Feww" don't say much.

You always can come up with a good domain name using your creativity
and/or asking for help over here.

If you have a domain name in mind not registered yet, don't post it here.
Someone may register while you thinking about it.

When checking for availabilty of a domain name go here:

"http://www.internic.net/whois.html" (Obviousy not an affiliate link)

That's a secure site. "Others" may register your domain while you sneezing...
If you want to have an idea of a domain value go to "Valuate.com" (Not Affiliate link)

Anyhow, if you come up with a good name, don't delay it and register right away.
Most people around here use "Namecheap", "Moniker", "Godaddy", etc.
    Good luck

    Meharis

Personally, I ALWAYS go for a .com even if it means changing around the key word slightly. In my opinion, it seems more official. As a user, when I come across a .net or .biz or whatever, I'm always skeptical that the info on the site is going to suck and be spammy.

Domain names should be something easy for any to remember ... but at the end of the day, whether its .com or .net , it doesn't mean anyone will come visit your site . If you do proper marketing , you'll get traffic to any domain name you wish.

Im not an expert but, the only difference a .com and any other is that its worth more if you plan on selling the site at a later stage.

    Best of luck

From what I have gathered, people are more trustful with .com sites. We have to understand they are not really knowledgeable about what goes around in the Internet world. If it's not .com, they will assume it's not what they consider "official" and it's easier for them to remember website addresses with .com domains. You might want to search for a reasonably good expired site with a .com domain. Only use a .net if you've already exerted effort but did not find a good site.

A .com website always has more potential with the correct keywords in it.

I use domainsbot.com to spin domain names (it is free). I also only use .com and sometimes 1 hyphen (too many hyphens seems spammy). I have no affiliation with this website (I just think it is great for finding variations to domains).

Here's a note about dot coms, and that is; not every dot com name is taken. It is not like they ran out of dot coms because that's next to impossible.

There are many unique veraitions of a name that one can use that aren't taken because of the fact that each individual is different and with that, each individual may come up with something totally different.

That wuld be like saying that all the words that could have ever have been said are all said so there would be no point in speaking or writing. That's nonsense because even though there are only 26 letters in the alphabet and even though most of the words in the English language have been use countless times, we didn't run out of words to say.

So the same can be said for domain names including the dot com ones. You just have to be unique in name creation and make it fit your business the best that you possibly can. So no, they're not running out of dot com names.

Here are some tips for finding COM domains...

    1. Check out the domain drop lists and auction lists. There are domains to be found for under $50. Many of the domain names in drop lists do become available.

Here are some places to find domain drop lists (You can download ZIP file lists from these links)

    https://www.snapnames.com/download.jsp

    http://www.pool.com/viewlist.aspx

    http://www.namejet.com/Pages/Downloads.aspx

    http://www.dynadot.com/expired/

ftp://ftp.godaddy.com/ (if a password prompt appears, enter auctions as login and leave password box empty. This may not work in Safari / Mac finder)

    2. If you are OK with domain names that may not have any specific meaning, try the pronounceable domain name generator at

    http://www.pronouncey.com

    3. Pick a magazine and look for interesting headlines. You will often find pairs of words that go together. Combine them to make a domain name.

.com or .net is best I think.

It's all about content for me really. I have seen plenty of .net domains over the years with much better content than its .com counterpart.
