One guru says, "If you just drive targeted traffic to your offer, your promotion will succeed."

Another guru says, "If you just make your offer irresistible enough, your promotion will succeed."

And yet another says, "If you just write persuasive sales copy, your promotion will succeed."

Fact is, you need all three.

I agree. But I think that the first one is the most important. They all connect to each other but the second and third would not really matter if you don't have the targeted traffic.

No you don't. You just need the right product/service, and they'll come.

Your product / service must be excellent to drive good traffic and conversion in the long term

Driving traffic is very important when you are just starting but when you offer them useful and quality products and services, the people will come to you so this is the most important if you want to last in this business.

      What jeff09 said.

Frank Kern had a great example using the Iphone. The Iphone sells itself, so just imagine you were the one who created it and you're going out there to promote it. You probably wouldn't break 2 sweats getting people to buy it.

If you focus on creating a "knockout" product, everything else (marketing, traffic, etc.) should be much more effective... and maybe even easier (especially since you'll more than likely gain the holy grail of marketing... which would be word of mouth).

Agree 100%. I think it starts with how good your product is. However, I would say that it still needs a bit of marketing for people to notice and appreciate it.

I'd add to this the following:

"If you want to make more money, concentrate on helping more people, instead of selling more products."

  • Fact is there are probably as many opinions about this as there are posters writing down their thoughts for us all.

I agree with alex that we need all three. It's like a chain, sort of: break one of the links and the entire chain is useless.

Yup! I'm in the camp that needs all three to be successful.

Easy peasy, I'd only add one more element to the mixture to ensure long term success:

    1. Targeted Traffic
    2. Conversions [based on irresistible offer, hypnotic copy, etc]
    3. A structured sales funnel for backend profits!

I manage a marketing budget for a client [in excess of $1 million a year] and they lose money on the front end. All of their profits comes from backend sales.

I remember when I first started out online many years ago, I had no backend products/services to offer. I made a bit of money on the frontend sales [via paid traffic] and my business really exploded once I built a strategic sales funnel.

These days in my niches I ensure that I have a sales funnel that goes beyond simple Upsells and Downsells.
