can anyone recommend a free (low cost) alternative to camtasia?

Give a shot of Jing or Camstudio, I think both are decent alternatives.

Screencast-O-Matic is a VERY inexpensive, pretty darn good, easy to use alternative if you don't care for Camtasia...

I agree 1000% with Mike here. I'm using it almost daily.

If you are starting out and need a Camtasia replacement with editing features then screencast-o-matic is the way to go.

It's $15 a year for the pro which gives you the editing, and you definitely want that.

they only thing I'd recommend would be jing but then - camtasia has so many things to offer so i'd really think about investing the bucks into a solid program with lots of features

I use Jing but I am not too happy with the fact that it saves only in .swf. It's free but it would be nice to have a free screencast program that saves in .flv or other formats for easy youtube uploads.

There is 3 I have tried.

CamStudio - Although I had some success with this one I found it lagged sometimes, mainly when trying to record something video game related for my World of Warcraft blog. It seems ok for a screen recorder for other videos though.

BandiCam - Is free but if your using the free version the top of the video will display bandicam.com. I do use this one only for my video game videos because it does a good job picture wise and no lag issues.

Screencast O Matic - I really like this one, easy to use! You can use a free version or pay $15.00 a year. I am paying the $15 a year and have had no issues with it.

Definitely, Screen Cast O Matic, it runs on Windoze and Mac, (actually it will run on anything that supports JAVA, ))

I use several different screen recorders and even saw an offer where they were selling a MAC version of Camtasia, but you know what the mess that Camtasia makes of the video along with the player, that is a mess in and of itself, for the money you cannot beat Screen Cast o Matic, it works, you may still have to manage work flow in a different way but at least you dont have to deal with the buggy mess that camtasia produces.

One thing I thought was artificially funny was that on the main camtasia website they obviously used another video product to create a video about their video product.

I was using Screencast O Matic in the past. Really value for money.

Then i moved to Camtasia and don't intend to go anywhere else.

    Cheers,

I agree with Magic Mike Screencast-O-Matic is friggin awesome... I have used that for about a year and I bought a Professional License that will stay active until late 2015 and I think I paid under $40 for it...

I use Screencast-O-Matic all the time, That would be your best bet to

I have just downloaded CAMTASIA on a trial basis.

To be honest I wish I didn't! I LOVE IT! Its so easy to use, and you can do so much with it.

And seeing as though I dont have $200 odd quid lying around, I think I will struggle to find a good alternative.

    Will check out SCREEN-O-MATIC though!

I highly recommend Camtasia Studio. I use it almost daily. It will easily pay for itself withing a day or two if you are charging anything for your content. It's worth the investment because of the time you save plus, the quality output, etc. If you're serious about making video for your business then stop trying to boot-strap it on your most important production tools.

I use Camstudio all the time and never have any problems with it. The only thing I've found is that it can take a lot of tweaking with the codecs and settings to get things right to begin with.

Another good free option is BB Flashback Express, I use this one too on occasion.

For me, I haven't found I need Camtasia, which is a good job really, as I tried the trial version and hated it. But then there are those who swear by it. At the end of the day, a lot will depend on what you want the software to do.

How about screenr.com ? it's Free, it's web based, it's super easy to use. The best one (after Camtasia) for me.

Good tool, I used it but it has a time limit and no editing features like Screencast-O-Matic which looks very similar at the free version with the difference that your video can be up to 15 minutes while in Screenr I think it's 5 minutes.

The pro for 15 a year let you record unlimited time and has editing tools which let you do 90% what you can do with Camtasia.

with camstudio you can record your computer screen with audio input from Mic or Speakers. Also shows mouse clicks in addition to the regular cursor.

I'm a regular Camtasia user now, but I have tried and used Screencast-O-Matic, I normally recommend it to anyone looking for an alternative.

It would be a one time investment but Camtasia beats all other tools. Beg, borrow or steal but go for Camtasia only, you will save lot of time and headache.

Nonetheless if you are keen on buying something else, you can try ActivePresenter Though I haven't tried it myself, I have heard good words about it.
