What can I give for FREE to persuade people visiting my blog to sign up?

I am not worried about giving one of my niche away.

I like gluten free foods. I wrote with my experience 18 unique articles based on gluten free living magazine ready to be posted on my website.

Questions:

1. The above magazine is for people who are interested in gluten free living. Now, is that a MARKET OR NICHE?

2. My goal is to write posts/articles on anything to do with gluten free living. How can I choose a NICHE within this MARKET(if at all it is called MARKET)?

3. What FREE product can I give it to my visitors to persuade them to give their email address?

4. What should I tell them? Newsletter, tips for gluten free living. etc.,?

Any suggestions? Please advise.

Peter.

  • Create a podcast, list it in itunes and give it away for free. Make it 10-20 minutes a week and then you have a great excuse to communicate with your list & build a relationship.

You can have a virtual cover created here on the WF or on fiver

I would be surprised if someone gives you an answer better than this one.

If the visitors found out that there something premium free from your website they are attracted to it. Visitors will visit your website regularly.

      Brian,

Thank you but what is a podcast? I am still a beginning student of Internet marketing.

Also, should it be called tips or newsletter?

      Alexa,

Thanks, will read the thread you pointed out. Do you think I am choosing a broad market? Should I narrow down? If so, based on what? My goal is to eventually make it into authority website, slowly though.

Focus on giving value. I have a whole area where I give away free articles and advice. My email newsletter optin sells this. I suppose I could compile them into a book and that would probably generate more opt-ins. Go through your best stuff, then give it away!

    You're asking the wrong people.

You need to ask your audience what they want. Set-up a simple 3 question survey. Ask the following:
    1. What are your three biggest frustrations when dealing with..._______________?
    2. What format do prefer? A. Video B. Newsletter C. Audio (Podcast)
    3. If I could provide answers to that frustration for you in the format you prefer, what would that mean to you?

Your audience will not only tell you what they want, you can use the emotion words in their comments to craft your headlines and sales copy, your offers, your product and then deliver it in the format they want.

Rarely do people ask for Newsletters because we're already overwhelmed by emails. We're not interested in learning more stuff. We want solutions and recommendations.

    Hope that helps.

I am focusing on giving value. Thanks.

Thank you Alexa for pointing to your other thread. There is lot of info to learn there.

      Duvall,

If you read my OP, I have not yet posted the 18 articles I finished. It is being proofread and edited. So, if I have not yet published on my website, how am I supposed to ask my visitors. I don't understand your question.

I have not yet created by main product. I want to blog and write articles first and then drive traffic. But, when the visitors come to my website, I wanted to know as to what can I provide them of IMMENSE value to give me their email.

      John McCabe,

By the by, I did not even know (LOL!) that the name servers from my domain registrar had to be updated on the HOSTGATOR account of mine. I was getting FTP error via filezilla, and could not figure out what was going on. Then, called the HG and the rep told me that I had to update the name servers and then I could upload all my content to my website.

      Thank you warriors.

      Regards,
      Peter.

        Hi, Peter.

There are a number of ways to ask an audience you don't yet have and you don't need to publish first. Here's how I do it...
Create the survey with the 3 questions I posted earlier in this thread. Then send a link to the survey to my prospective audience via social networks, email, jv partners and even press releases. Also, post an embedded version of your survey on your blog. You can even make a short, very simple video explaining what you're doing and ask people to take the short survey... even ask the questions in your video. Upload the video to YouTube and post a link to the survey in the comments below. Free survey tools like Survey Monkey allow up to 100 responses per survey. This will at least get you some feedback. I have used this system to custom create targeted content in specific niches like Horse Training. Works like a charm.

Once you have your responses, be sure to look for trends... do you see a common problem that people struggle with often. Create your first product around solving that problem. For example: with my horse trainer, we discovered that a common problem many people had was that their horse didn't respect the rider's space and would walk over them, get pushy, run off with them, scrape them off in the trees, etc. So our first training video was made to address these issues by teaching the rider how to establish HERD leader positioning with the horse. Our prospects told us exactly what they wanted (topic), how they wanted it (video), and how to sell it to them (we used their own words to title and write the sales copy)

Does that clarify what I meant? If not, feel free to ask. Happy to help.

To answer the second part of your question, Peter... we sold the video training that I just described. We also offered a couple of short video tips from the full video training product for free as an incentive to get their name and email. Once the we had that then we could send them additional tips and offers to buy the full DVD. We also surveyed the list from time to time for new ideas on what horse training to create next.

Excellent advice, so now my question is where would you put the survey? Create a page that says "survey"? I wouldn't want to create a post about surveys, posts eventually get lost.

This is great advice you can even do this on forums related to your topic and they will tell you exactly what they want.

I also agree with the fact that people want to solve their problems. If you can solve this for them they will follow you and recommend you. word of mouth goes a long way to getting traffic today or should I say Social media word of mouth.

He has no traffic so 18 articles for his site are plenty for now. Much more than I'd put on a new site. You just end up wasting your content otherwise.

A free ebook? Hmmm not exactly super compelling is it. Add more value, offer something other than a 'free ebook'.

Wow and they can download your book and get access to a 'newsletter' too....I bet they can't resist that offer.

If there is a magazine created around a niche market, it means it is profitable. Since you will already be creating content, you can repurpose your content by compiling it as a free report so that you can give away to your subscribers.

You definitely want to collect their email address so that you will be able to grow your own list of subscribers. Once you have your own list of subscribers, you will be able to send them other useful content that you have created in the future and other relevant resources that will help them.

"Gluten-free" in and of itself is pretty narrow, if you ask me. But yes, you can give away a free book on a gluten free desert recipes.

Brian Duvall is right though to ask your audience. In the meantime, you can give away anything you want. Just make the headline compelling enough to opt-in.

In either case, you'll probably end up testing and tweaking your opt-in bribe and the words you use to sell it quite frequently until you figure out what works for you.

Gluten free is pretty narrowed down already and you can tie it to other markets aswell maybe how to gain muscle with gluten free diets and products like that.

As for stuff to give away you could go down the Tim ferris route and become a guinea pig for gluten free and then update subsribers via a podcast or vlog.

    Good luck with it.

Tim Ferris uses his body as an experiment for his subscribers. That's how he created his new 4 hour body fitness book, in a nutshell.

Basically, before recommending anything to his subscribers, he runs tests on himself to see how it works. Then he shares it with his audience.

It ends up being pretty compelling.

    Hey!

When I go ahead and create my "ethical bribes" to get people to sign onto my list, I try to include as much VALUE as possible.

This is amazing, as it makes people remember who you are... therefore, making them more likely to open up your emails.

Also, I like to create a package that I send out over a couple of days...

This also gives me a chance to make sure that they open up their emails!

I advise that you try to make your free gift in video format. This then gets them used to who you are and gives you the chance to stand out from your opposition.

    Hope this helped!

You could perhaps target the Peters of your country? If so:

What made you take a closer look at those gluten free living magazines and cough up some of your hard earned money to buy? Its cover headlines and the feature stories in it, along with its overall visual presentation?

The Peters of your country could most likely do that too, especially when you're just asking for their emails in exchange for better content, and not their money...

You have gotten lots of good advice so far, but I will throw in my .02 as well.

First like others have said Gluten Free Living is in itslef a niche. You can narrow it down to a "micro-niche" if you really want to and so something like:
gluten free receipes (a little bigger than just desserts)
    living with celiac disease etc.
I think Gluten free living is narrow enough that you could stick with that and then find a different product in each micro niche to keep your earnings up. Create 3-5 autoresponder messages for each product, just information, not "sales-y" with a link to the related product. For example share one of your recipes and then link to the book "for more great meal ideas check this out"
Back to the question at hand: if you have already written 18 articles you could just complie them into an ebook; write something a little longer as your ebook; do the podcast; if you have met other people with lots of knowledge about gluten interview them and transcribe it... hell call your doctor and ask him a bunch of questions and transcribe that.
Survey: you can set up a free survey at sites like survey monkey dot com. I would just link to it maybe under your "about me" post.

Basically, your giveaway is your expertise! just decide how to present it and you are golden!

    Peter,

Lots of good advice already in this thread, but I'd like to suggest an alternative strategy:

    Don't give away anything.

The standard free product as a bribe for an opt-in approach is fine for a marketing model in which the bulk of your communication is delivered by email. But if you're trying to build a magazine-type site, that's your product.

Make your site compelling enough that your visitors want to feel a part of it. Encourage feedback - for instance, ask your readers to submit a favorite gluten-free recipe that others can rate or comment on.

    Get a community spirit going.

Then you can either include a simple sign-up box on your site so your readers can get notified of new posts, or you could compile their submissions into a regular newsletter that they can sign up to receive.

If you make this newsletter seem like an extension of the site, your readers will gladly give you their email addresses because they'll actually want to hear from you.

    Hi,

Why do you have to give them anything free?

Would you rather someone subscribers to your list because they like what you have to say and want to hear more.

Or someone that signed up to get the freebie?

One approach builds a much better quality list than the other that will remain engaged with your site/brand for life.

What you offer them for free is the superb content you post on the blog - they should be falling all over themselves to sign up without the need of a carrot on the stick based freebie to entice.

I agree with you that your content should be the main reason people opt in but there's nothing wrong with an incentive too for people who are on the fence.

It should never be about opting in just to get the freebie but mainly because they love your content and want to get more of it with the freebie being an extra sweetener.
