How can I make a site like ETSY?

Hi guys

I have a friend that wants to start a site like Etsy :: Your place to buy and sell all things handmade

He wants a much more stripped down version and one that is aimed at a particular niche of artists.

Is this an enormous task to set up and moderate?

Not if it's a pretty small niche. But he will need an ecommerce script and some web skills to moderate it/keep it running. But if he's only getting very targeted traffic and a few sales a day it should be really easy for one person to keep it running on their own, once initial setup is complete.

The following may help if you can decipher it all! If not outsource the project to a highly recommended freelance coder...

Etsy is pretty advanced. The ecommerce part of it isn't but the
social networking part of it is very interesting. My girlfriend
sells stuff on it and I've become familiar with it.

The crux of the matter is that the extra features keep buyers
and sellers engaged. I've seen some other sites that try to do
similar things. Etsy is the only one I've looked at that has come
even close to Ebay as a far as user engagement features, and
I think that has a lot to do with Etsy's success.

People won't want to show-up for an experience that isn't as
good as what they can get elsewhere. I wouldn't advise your
friend to pursue it unless he's prepared to go the distance to
make it genuinely a cool site - then I say "go for it!"

Put it out there and see what a programmer would make of it.

    Place bid requests ont:
    elance.com
    rentacoder.com (my favourite)

Its a free service to get people to bid on your work. They'll explain all the nuances and whether or not it is particularly difficult to build. See what comes back from them and go from there.

    Hope this helps

    Cheers
