Adding a shop to my blog. Subdomain or just a Page?

Hi warriors,

I have my personal blog about martial arts, and want to add a shop, where I will be selling some martial arts gear. I just can't decide where to open that shop, in different subdomain or just in the new page or category? What would you recommend? what pros and cons?

You might get plugin if you are on wordpress for your ecommerce activity. Search for it. No need to go for subdomain. If you want to go for subdomain, its not advisable for SEO purpose. So try to find out your suitable plugin.

This is true. Overall, use wordpress as for advertising.

Just set it off it's own directory.

    mysite.com/store/

Then set all your categories as you need them.

    mysite.com/store/gloves
    mysite.com/store/headgear
    mysite.com/store/dvds

    ...etc

Thank you for the responses guys. Some of you saying to create a separate directory, some category. Is it the same thing?

Don't use a subdomain. Subdomains are considered separate domains, so you'll need to do a lot more linkbuilding to get it to rank. Stick with a separate directory.

That is precisely why you use a subdomain.

I know you're getting confusing and contradictory advice on this thread. That is typical of SEO threads.

The reason I suggest a subdomain is Google's Panda updates, which have tended to hit ecommerce sites hard where the content on each page is short and similar to that on other sites. Having a number of pages hit by Panda can damage the rankings of your entire site - even the non-ecommerce pages.

One of the methods used to climb out of the Panda penalty is to use subdomains, which is why I suggest considering that from the get go.

You may want to do some research about Panda and subdomains.

On the other hand, if SEO is not a concern then I recommend a subdirectory.

        .

      Of course it's not.

One directory for your store, then separate categories for each item type.

      mysite.com/store/gloves
      mysite.com/store/headgear
      mysite.com/store/dvds

EDIT - Actually, they're all directories. I'm just giving the example above using that explanation.

Well, yes. They are pretty much referring to the same thing. As long as you don't create subdomains so you'll be okay. Try checking the different WP plugins you'll find great themes there just like what the other member advised.Good luck!

Ah I see, thank again. I will use directory to create my shop. But I'm also thinking to create subdomain and redirect it to my directory. shop.mysite.com > mysite.com/shop. Or you think is no point to do that?

I just want to make sure I understood you right... You are suggesting me to create new folder for my shop right? Or just a page?

    You don't need the subdomain.

Just do what I suggested above.

Maybe you should just make a ebay store or a amazon store because people will have trust when making a purchase because its on a big site?

I put my shop on the subdomain, like shop.domainname.com when I have it in conjunction with a blog.

Few days back I had the same question in mind. I did not go for sub-domain because of ranking factor.

You can create one category in the current blog and then ask some wordpress developer to customize that category for your shop. This way everything will share same wordpress configuration. I mean, this way - yoursitename.com/store(category)

Or else, you can create a directory (trough cPanel) and then install another wordpress there and then customize your store. Means - yoursitename.com/store(directory)

Whichever you feel easy, you can do it. But personally, I prefer the first option.

definitely create a directory and use the ecommerce plugin. i really like it as it connects directly to my paypal account. i believe the plugin is free and some plugins you can setup reoccurring subscription.

I recommend that you have a page that redirects to a subdomain.
Where you can have your e-com site.
