Getting ERROR 404 - PAGE NOT FOUND

Hello Warriors,

I uploaded via FTP WP to my Hostgator server.

According to wordpress.org, I am in step 4:

Step 4: Upload the files

Now you will need to decide where on your domain you'd like your WordPress-powered site to appear:
  • In the root directory of your web site. (For example, Example Domain)
= = = =
I did the above.

Then, I did the step 5 as below:

= = = =
Step 5: Run the Install Script

Point a web browser to start the installation script.
  • If you placed the WordPress files in the root directory, you should visit: Example Domain
= = = =

Now, I am getting the message:

Getting ERROR 404 - PAGE NOT FOUND

According to WP site, they instructed me to do as follows:

Setup configuration file
If WordPress can't find the wp-config.php file, it will tell you and offer to try to create and edit the file itself. (You can do also do this directly by loading wp-admin/setup-config.php in your web browser.) WordPress will ask you the database details and write them to a new wp-config.php file

= = = =
Still, I am getting the msg:

ERROR 404 - PAGE NOT FOUND

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks,
Peter.

i had this problem a couple of months back. Are you using hostgator? I just contacted them and they fixed it for me. They offer great service, so you should contact them.

        Thank you herdfan2005.

I politely decline to do so. I have been advised by people here to do manual install, that's what I am doing.

        Regards,
        Peter.

Hi I am not sure why you prefer to do manually
fantistico will do the install in seconds
But you should be able to see where the config file has ended up
in your ftp software or your file manager in the file section in cPanel

so you should be able to get there by creating the address

          YourDomainName.com/FolderIfAny/wp-admin/setup-config.php
Change YourDomainName.com to your website url
and if you have installed in a directory then us the correct folder name

          In Root
          http://YOURDOMAIN.com/wp-admin/setup-config.php

          In Directory
          http://YOURDOMAIN.com/FOLDER/wp-admin/setup-config.php

Change capitalized word to correct address

            Okay Warriors,

I had installed installed WP on root directory instead of at public_html. I corrected that and now I am facing following problem:

            = = = =

Now, I am getting the error msg:

Sorry, I need a wp-config-sample.php file to work from. Please re-upload this file from your WordPress installation.

            I am on step 5 from wordpress.org:

Step 5: Run the Install Script

Point a web browser to start the installation script.
            • If you placed the WordPress files in the root directory, you should visit: Example Domain
I already followed instructions and changed the file name to wp-config.php
and entered my dbuser, user and password in that file.

            = = =

            What am I doing wrong?

            Thanks,
            Peter.

              Hi Peter

Looks Like you have changed the name of wp-config-sample.php
              towp-config.php on the site

So you no longer have a copy wp-config-sample.php on the siteIf this is the casethen upload the a copy ofthe wp-config-sample.php file from you computer to the
              website root folder

so you will have the edited renamed file and wp-config.php and wp-config-sample.php in the same folder

which is precisely what the error message is telling you to do

              Good luck

                Thank you kaisoft.

So, I need to have both the wp-config-sample.php and wp-config.php?

I will try that tonight when I get home from work.

                Peter.

                  Hi Peter

                  Are you up and running
                  just interested
I have hit plenty of brick walls myself
the difference between working or not can be so small
and quite often very simple once you know

These days I like to find a video tutorial watch it from start to finish
then stop and start it and follow along is small stages
                  Works for me
