Are you already wealthy?

I've been making a very good living online since 2001.

And in the beginning, probably like most folks who start out... it was all about the Benjamins. My only concern was how fast I could get to six figures.

But when I reached it in 2003 or so, I noticed something weird.

It didn't change me one bit. I wasn't really any happier, I didn't really go out and splurge or do anything wild.

Sure, the vacations were nice, and the ability to offer my family and friends nice things, that was all good.

But the entire time... chasing after the elusive six figure income, well, it didn't mean much once I got there.

And the worst thing about it... was that I failed to enjoy the journey during that time. It all flew by as I spent 14 hour days, stuck to my computer.

All in all, I wasn't any happier making six figures than I was when I was making $40,000 as a cop.

The one thing that WAS great about it all?

The freedom i had.

The freedom to go as I pleased, travel when I wanted, work when I wanted... not being chained to a desk or having to listen to some boss.

For me, the freedom is what makes this all worthwhile.

But something else, at least for me, made me realize I am wealthy.

For the past 6 years... i've been able to wake up with my son, tuck him into bed at night, bring him to school every single day, pick him up from school, and be there for every single event that happens.

I'm the only parent in his class who can go on field trips every time they are held... i'm the only parent who can go into his class and help out on projects.

To me, that's what true wealth is. It's not the money anymore... it's the freedom as well as what it allows me to do.

So let me ask... are you at that point where it's all about the money still?

Or do you have some freedom in your day, where you're not chained to a desk or a 9-to-5 job with a boss.

If you're free... consider yourself lucky. Most people would kill for that freedom.

And if you're able to spend more time with your friends or family... consider yourself lucky. Again, a lot of people would kill for that.

I know for those who are struggling financially... the money really is the driving force.

I get that.

But please, take a few minutes to remind yourself how wealthy you really are.

If you can pick and choose when you'll work during the day, you're doing pretty darn good.

If you can spend more time with your kids or spouse... more than most "working folks".... you're pretty lucky.

I'm totally honest when I say there's so much more to this internet marketing thing than just money.

Yes, money is nice and it's important... because it allows you the freedom and ability to make certain choices.

but it's not everything.

And if you're at that point where you're not making the kind of money you want to be making... it's even more important to savor those other things that DO make you wealthy.

The freedom to come and go as you please, the freedom to spend more time with your family.

Those should help remind you why you're even working so hard to GET to the money part of this.

It will come if you're persistent... but in the meantime... maybe you're wealthier than you realize.

Look around at your friends, family, neighbors... they may LOVE to have the freedoms you have.... and choose when and IF you're going to work today.

For me, it is not just the freedom that makes me wealthy, it is the ability to DO WHAT I LOVE TO DO... I love to learn. I get paid to learn. That's what makes me 'wealthy.'

I think Danny summed it up best... lifestyle and good life.

to me.... those are more important perks of what we do... yet so many IM folks just focus on the money... and in the process... lose sight of the freedom.

And what Tim said is true as well... Money can do a lot of things but it cannot, and does not, make you happy :-)

I've met some pretty miserable millionaires... and yet some of the happiest people I know live a very modest lifestyle.

            I agree 100%.

Although I've learned that having more money, just for materialistic things it can bring you... is meaningless.

What is DOES allow you to do is solve those kinds of problems that being broke can cause.

For example, living in a sh*tty neighborhood cause that's all you can afford.

Not having a vehicle to get you where you want to go

not being able to provide necessary medical needs to your kids or family

There's a whole host of problems that being broke can cause. Not to mention the stress and anxiety of always worrying about money.

But on the flipside, i can say for sure that simply having alot of money doesn't automatically make you happy.

what it DOES allow you to have is the FREEDOM to tell a boss to shove it, or a bad client to take a F**king leap.... it allows you the opportunity to provide your family with things that you may not otherwise be able to when you're broke.

it just gives you choices... and freedom... which can ultimately bring you happiness.

But again, i've been on both sides... and the amount of problems i had when broke sure outnumbered the ones i had when making a lot of money.

Once you realize that you're "free" from financial burden... and that your bills/family/obligations are covered... and that you have a decent cushion in the bank....

then i honestly think it's a matter of CHOICE to be happy.

and i say that because it can often be a struggle for me.... even when i have a lot that others don't, i often find myself with days of self-doubt, or sadness.

but again, i look around and see what others may be dealing with (we just had 3 huge fires here in our city last week that left 200 people homeless)

i look around and realize... sh*t... i'm pretty damn lucky.

and that's when i realize, it's all a choice we have to be happy, no matter where we are in our lives....

The degree in which money can or cannot pose problems (or lack of them) depends purely upon lifestyle and personality.

Yes, money brings some form of freedom but I think the point is there is a certain level you can obtain in wealth where you lose your freedom. If your not losing your freedom, you don't have enough money yet.

You would have to walk a day in my shoes to understand... Do you have a "family" full of drug dealers, pimps, killers and gang bangers that will do anything to take what you got? Everyday I wake up someone has their hand out. Even though I moved my family away from that environment I still have crazy people popping-up on my door step and I live in a whole different state. Were I'm from nobody lives to be my age.. I've lost hundreds upon hundreds of friends.. I've been stabbed and shot a couple of times from jealousy.. Julius, you're to be commended just for rising above that sh*t and doing what you have to do to make a legit living.

If you can make it with a lot of those hurdles... and yes, we all have hurdles but it sounds to me like you have more than most... but if you can do it, then there's no reason anyone can't.

I'm always much more inspired by those who have battled adversity and pulled through... without falling prey to the sh*tstorm around them... versus some hedge fund baby who is given everything.

Thanks.. I'm very passionate about IM.. With my criminal record, jobs are hard to come by... So I can sell crack and end up dead or locked up (which I have done countless times.. well not dead but close), lose my wife and kids.. or I can create and sell products to my list and be "free".. To be able to provide and spend time with my family and work for myself is heaven sent.. The most important thing is my kids will never have to go through what I did.

That is arguable isn't it? Having a lot of it gives someone a better chance to be happy than not having enough.

        Hi Shawn,

I agree with you that money is not everything and in my opinion, freedom is everything.

Similar to you, I came into Internet marketing because I enjoy the complete freedom that you won't find in most other jobs and trades.

Internet marketing gives you both financial freedom and time freedom.

I do agree with you that we should cherish the freedom that we have and focus on enjoying the time freedom with our loved ones at every moments.

Thank you for such an enlightening post, Shawn.

Last but not least, to me, health is wealth.

        God Bless.

        This is the whole point.

Sure, money cannot make you happy, we all agree... But guess what: Struggling to pay the bills won't make you happy either, and it can certainly add a good share of headaches to your life!

So, considering other elements of the equation (health, family, love, etc) being equal, you're ALWAYS closer to happiness with a few extra bucks in your pocket, even if it's just because of the fact that those extra bucks can buy you out of many painful headaches: paying the rent, decent medical care, a nice romantic holidays with your wife, replacing that old car that breaks down every second month, etc.

I cannot think of any -normal- situation where being broke gets you closer to happiness than being wealthy.

The whole basis of money is to "buy back time".. Time it would take to learn every single trade like gardening, creating metals, plastic, building the machines that builds the cars, power generators etc... Every time you spend money your are "outsourcing"..
But I do agree with you being broke is not good "if" you require a certain lifestyle.. But there are those the live in woods with nice houses, solar panels and a nice water filtration system and never pay a single bill or buy food and they are happier than ever and have all the freedom in the world. No taxes or mortgage!

I make good money online. Not super rich, but i do what i do. I'm also a practicing computer network technician, so the paper is there. I think people would go nutz if they ever made $100,000 a year online. From a job it would be standard, but from a business.... they'd probably to weekend visits to Vegas every month.

I think that's so true. Although i started out because i wanted to make more money and afford a lifestyle to make me happy, But i wasn't anymore happy. I was working like 12 hours a day.

I decided to cut back a little and enjoy the thing around me more. I spent more time with my family, went for more holidays and bought more things! And you know what, although my earning dropped a little, I was still making good money.

I started to automate and outsource most of my work and just focus on the important aspect which is to grow my business. Slowly, my business grew bigger and i had more time to myself and my love ones. I realised whats really freedom is.

I am now loving what i do and sharing with people how to start making a business online too. Seeing how others can achieve freedom now makes me feel more happy than anything else.

So to those IM who just start or struggling, work at it till you get there.

Wealthy, is never how much money you own, or how much money you make. It's the freedom that you have, the freedom to do what you love, the happiness from your freedom.

My ultimate goal of doing internet marketing, is the freedom that I hopeful will have someday.
    Keep up the good work!

I am just finally turning some profits after about a year of trying to make websites. I finally have a site I am proud of and its growing slowly.

As of right now I sell on ebay right now making only 2-3k a month but the freedom it lets me have is truly amazing. One day I would love to make six figures with only my website.

Thanks for the motivation fellow warrior

I have a pretty good life (like almost every people in norway).
A big % of the people here in norway have 6 figures allready( in $).

I had around $100k from my oiljob (works 2 weeks on/4 weeks off) and and some more from different other businesses(amongst them IM).

Everybody says that USA is the land of opurtunities. But in my opinion Norway is just as good....

As someone who has passed the "6-figure" barrier, I do agree the best part is the freedom.

I still do probably work more than the average person (I'm way over 40hrs a week), but it is nice to have "the option" to take off whenever I please.

There is a lot to be said about quality living, and I would rather make much less and be in full control of my life. That is why I left the cubicle 8 years ago and never looked back.

If you're not there yet, just keep your head down and grind it out. This stuff aint hard, it's just tedious. Keep at it long enough and you will break through.

Great post!! I think this is why it is important from the start to think about what it is you want to achieve and what the whole point of making money is. Many say they would like to make 50 grand a month...without any idea why they would need that much!!

What I'm trying to say is you need a purpose, it could be to help other people, to give to charity, to create something that is missing in the world etc. If it's making money just to buy stuff, the novelty of that will wear off pretty quickly.

I've talked to my brother about this a lot- making good money doesn't make you happier. Not by a long shot.

Sure, it lets you buy new toys and invest more- but some of my best, happiest times was as a poor college kid.

Because happiness isn't about what you have- it's about who you spend your time with and being healthy.

Plus there have been studies that prove income isn't related to wealth. If it was, how can anyone in third world countries be happy? But they tend to be happier than a lot of first-world countries.

You're 100% right... find a job/work that you love... and one that you can create a lifestyle that you enjoy... and you truly will never "work"

When friends and family are saying how it's Sunday and they don't want to go back to work tomorrow... you'll realize that just about every day is a "weekend" for you... cause you love what you do.

    Hi..

It's like you were reading my mind, living my life.

I have been using the internet to generate income for years now. And like you, every now and then I truly realize the benefits that this lifestyle offers.

My Dad worked his a$$ off from 6am to 6pm, 6 days a week to provide for me. And I will always love him for that, for sacrificing so much for me.

But as a Dad myself, I knew I had to find a different way. The two main roads were to go to work, make good money, but have little time to enjoy my kids. Or to stay with my kids fulltime, and then struggle financially.

The internet is the game changer. It allowed me to create a lifestyle where I can have the best of both worlds: to be able to generate enough income AND still have the opportunity to watch my children grow.

And so like you, I get to do the field trips, and concerts, and any of the other things that pop up, and that most 9to5 parents miss.

And I'm not saying that there is anything wrong with a 9to5 lifestyle. I'm not judging anyone. It just doesn't work for me. For me to feel fulfillment, I need to have time with my kids.

Am I wealthy? Financially, no. But I am getting closer.

But it terms of time, I have more "wealth" than most people. I am able to generate income while still being free enough to raise my kids firsthand.

Great share man! I agree completely... money doesn't change much aside from being able to live some of the freedoms which you enjoy, but it changes much less than most people think.

I really like this post because I think that happiness comes from when you feel fulfilled inside and you know you're genuinely helping people to get what they want, not just "selling" something.

I agree with this. What is great about having your own business is you get to manage your own time. You can go to places and have fun while earning. However this will require a lot of hard work and luck. Having your own business means you take care of the most problems.

I honestly think that what stops most people from getting to this place of happiness, comfort, and security... is because many people are always chasing the "make money fast" scheme or the "get rick quick" gimmick.

And because of that... they continue to strike out and fail, a lot.

this, in turn leads to no money... then money problems... anxiety and worry over bills, etc.

Compare that to actually creating a lifestyle business that's built around solving other peoples' problems... adding value to other peoples' lives... trying to help other people live better and get what they want.

I think when you build a business that's out to serve and help other people... you get an instant and automatic happiness boost.

and guess what? yep, over time... you also make a lot of money, if done right.

The "Happines" research says that for the US resident, after $75,000
per year you can't be made any happier by more money, but people who
    make less are less happy.

So money cannot make you happy but the lack thereof can make
you sad. That is why my prayer is found in Proverbs 31:7,8:

    “Two things I ask of you, Lord;
do not refuse me before I die:
    8 Keep falsehood and lies far from me;
give me neither poverty nor riches,
but give me only my daily bread.
9 Otherwise, I may have too much and disown you
and say, ‘Who is the Lord?’
Or I may become poor and steal,
and so dishonor the name of my God.

Not wealthy but it's enough to not have to work over the summer during college. At this point that's really all I could ask for.

    Beautifully said, Ray.

I remember John Carlton telling the story of how he was on Miami Beach with sun and beautiful women everywhere... sitting there at an outside cafe with a guy who was worried and depressed about opening up his 17th car parts store, or something like that.

That stuck with me over the years... and I've always told myself... never get to the point where I'm obsessed about money... and neglecting those people who are around me.

    I have a client who makes between 10 - 20 million a year.

He's not a happy person, because he's always trying to protect his wealth.

I coach him 2 (sometimes 3) times a week - trying to get to the root of why he's so miserable - no matter how much money is streaming into his various accounts.

At the end of the day...

He's dealing with a massive amount of fear and insecurity. He grew up dirt poor and is afraid beyond belief about his children ever experiencing the same thing. It drives him to push himself to the point where he never gets to experience the joy and pleasure of his financial freedom.

    For me personally...

I only work about 4 - 6 hours a day and make a high 6 figure income. I could make more. But I enjoy the same pleasures that Shawn mentioned. I love picking my daughter up at school and having her friends over for playdates. I love driving out to the coast on a whim to go surfing. I love playing 4 hour marathon tennis matches and waking up the next day feeling like I got hit by a truck.

Those are the little nuances that make financial freedom worth while.

I don't allow the fear that it could all be taken away from me at a moment's notice get under my skin like a lot of people who push themselves into an unhappy, money-driven coma.

I grew up poor. I've been homeless. And I appreciate the journey.

    By the way...

When you command a positive, fun-loving, grateful attitude, the growth of your financial freedom tends to be effortless.

    Appreciation appreciates.

Couldn't agree with you more. A lot of people lose focus as to why they actually want to get in to internet marketing. If it's to become extremely wealthy then there are probably easier ways.

I remember back in 2010 I made a large amount of money with a one off venture and I had it all sitting in the bank and it didn't change one thing. You're right about the freedom though, it's by FAR the best by product of the IM lifestyle!

Money isn't everything, but the gurus like for you to believe that it is because of the fact that they're always waving screenshots in your face of ClickBank, and PayPal accounts that are supposably stuffed with cash.

They wave all that money in your face in the hope that you will buy into their next shiny object while you end up broke in the end and they're laughing all the way to the bank.

The fact is; money never is everything.People who are in this just for the money shouldn't be in this business anyway because they're too greedy. Like was mentioned earlier in the post above, money helps to provide freedom. It is a tool and as such, you should use it like a tool, and not a god.

Money can do a lot of very great things if used in the right way, but use it in the wrong way and it can bring you to total ruin. Being an online entrepreneur means taht you should work smarter, not foolishly.

Build lasting friendships, lasting business relationships, and do all that is needed to do to succeed online, but never ever become so greedy that you will stop at nothing to make a six figure income.

To those that aren't making a six figure income, let me tell you that a six figure income isn't the be all end all thing.

Sure six figures is nice, but the question is; would you really be happy with that amount? If you end up making six figures, then you will automatically want more and more until you're ate up with making money.

That's not what you want out of this business. What you want is freedome to do the things that you want to do. So in order to reach that point, start slowly and forget about all those shiny objects that the gurus are trying to get you to buy.

Use the techniques, tools and strategies that have been proven to work to drive traffic and sell your products and services. That's really all that is needed.

As long as I have my health I am always happy.

I could be a tramp living out of a cardboard box, but as long as the olde tickers still thumping I would be wealthy in my eyes.

The only reason I do IM is so that I have the time to enjoy my time, not to buy a new car or to show of to people.

yes, I consider myself wealthy - rich in experience, online friends, possibilities, and opportunities. The money? I do alright - could do better - but I am happy.

I think the Op nailed it - it's not about the money - it's about the freedom

Steve Jobs sure was wealthy but how many 52, 54, 56 year old men want his fate?

It would make for an interesting debate to choose between massive wealth and a short life or meager wealth and long, healthy, life.

It's hard to define wealth, but I agree with you that it's not about money (well not entirely).

What I found interesting is that money made online feels different than weekly paychecks I used to get from working. In a way it's similar to spending money online (or buying with a Credit Card) as I found earning different amount every day and not having it physically in your hand (check or cash) make you think less about it. Which is a good thing for me as it keeps my bank account healthy without giving me ideas to spend it on stuff I don't really need.

I guess for me it's freedom as well and not trying to survive from one paycheck to another.

For example my 3 year old daughter was diagnosed with bad case of eczema which requires creams, lotions and some kind of protective barriers that are not cover by insurance and will cost us about $1,000 a month. Now that would be hard to do on $540 weekly paycheck (I used to get from my old job) along with rent and basic needs.
