Best way to test candidate for written English proficiency

We'll start conducting face to face interviews shortly.

I would like to know from fellow warriors here, what do you think is the best way to test candidate for his/her written English proficiency.

Any ideas are most welcome.

    Thanks Art.

Should we go about adding such a question during pre-screening while asking for their Resumes? OR should this be done at the time of interviews only?

It is definitely important since the candidate is expected to do customer support over email, we want that to be as professional as possible.
The pros of asking such a question in pre-screening will be that we will save time and the cons could be that a candidate may cheat his/her way out.

    Here's another one...
    Written Communication Proficiency

You could prepare a set of questions for during interviews. You can find samples online with a quick search, and then just tailor them to relate to your business.

Regarding your concern about cheating during pre-screening, the candidate is unlikely to cheat if he/she isn't aware that it is in fact a test.
