I've used them both & they've both been equally dependable (as far as shared hosting goes). I haven't had any problems with either company. hostgator is a bigger company, so if I had to choose I'd go with them...

I contacted BlueHost support. They told me these plans are available. It sounds like it isn't like HostGator where you pay on a monthly basis, but instead you have to pay a lump sum up front. Is this correct?

I asked support if the $4.95/month plan could be cancelled at anytime and they told me that it can be cancelled at anytime, but to get that rate you are technically paying for 3 years up front. Which is confusing. If your technically paying for 3 years up front how can the plan be cancelled at anytime?

$6.95 per month which is 83.40 for 1 year or
$5.95 per month which is 142.80 for 2 years or
$4.95 per month which is 178.20 for 3 years
And these are the Renewal rates, that start after your first term ends,
$8.99 per month for one year which is $107.88 or
$7.99 per month for two years which is $191.76 or
$6.99 per month for three years which is $251.64
There are No contracts, so you can cancel at anytime for a pro-rated refund

I've literally just made the same move for the exact same reason. Although it's all pre-pay, I stand to save myself a tidy little sum! Web hosting is almost like petrol, so long as it's good quality why pay more?

How difficult was it to move your sites over? I asked BlueHost support and they told me they provide step by step instructions on how to migrate, but if you don't want to do it they provide a migration service for $99.99

As the migration service is that expensive it's sounds like the process would be rather long winded.

If you want to save more, please use justhost. As far as I can see, they are the same company. I chatted with their sales manager, and she told me this is just a marketing strategies. If you choose justhost, you can save addtional 2 dollars per month with the exact same services and datacenter.

Yes you need to backup and move SQL databases, and reconnect them to whatever you're using. I'm using WordPress.

I moved for more reasons than their costs also, I was once an affiliate for them and I believe they were scrubbing legitimate sales I was making.

So I personally just don't like Hostgator as a company any more, their ethics have gone way down. Their business model is flawed, and the only way they can remain solvent is to defraud affiliates.

Pretty sad state of affairs really. :rolleyes:

As far as moving hosting (or any other "advanced" tasks, Bluehost has videos the explain it all, step-by-step).

As a website/blog developer, I've been using strictly Bluehost for about 5 years, for my own sites and for client's sites. Best shared hosting I've ever found and they always rank in the top few on those hosting review sites.

Also best support ever. It's true that I never had to wait on a Bluehost phone queue in the past and lately have to wait a bit - but it's not for long (like 5 minutes).

What I've loved about the support (besides the high quality, easy to understand US staff and their intelligence) is that they will try to help me with 3rd party products, like WordPress PHP issues and such - even though they are not required to support 3rd party products, they will usually try (and they do know a lot).

Hmm they're showing that price to me in GBP £ instead, I paid for 36 months with Bluehost so it'd be around the same price for me. You have to pre-pay a lot to get the price way down, same with Bluehost.

Im sure when I started this thread earlier today, on their website it said the price was $4.95 but now it says $3.95

Anyway, if Justhost is essentially the same service, it doesn't seem worth paying extra for Bluehost.

I am a Host Gator user, and even though their prices have gone up, it is for a very good reason. You see they have to pay those wonderful tech support people for the quality work that they do, so the raise in price helps pay for that, and for me, excellent technical support means everything to me.

Sure you can pay less for your hosting somewhere else, but then like the popular saying goes; "You get what you pay for." So if I were you, I would remain with Host gator because you know that they do offer top notch support and help 24-7, and my friend, that means everything to someone running an online business site.

The rise in price of HG has nothing to do with their quality of work, it's due to EU taxes.

The quotes below from this thread about Bluehost support suggests it's also high.

Bluehosts support is also 24/7. What is actually better about HostGator's support over Bluehosts's? I haven't even contacted HostGator support once within the last year, so I don't think support is a major priority.

It is because they will limit your file counts and they will down your site without any prior notice though they says unlimited space...

I've heard HostGator downing sites without prior notice also. That's the nature of shared hosting as there is limited resources and bandwidth to each user.

I know it is the nature of the shared hosting to make your site down. But in case of blue host they just down your site due to file count. It is likely 50 thousand. It means you can not hose more than few sites within a hosting using WordPress or any other CMS.

I do not know what is the reason of being site hacked on Bluehost more frequent. But I had to face this issues so I have shared it with you.

If it's true that you can't host more than a few sites, then why does Bluehost have such a high reputation?

If what your saying is true, id expect to see reviews with people saying "you can only have a few sites due to file count, which is crap", etc..

My experience shows that I can host a lot of site with Hostgator than Blue Host. Also Being hacked was common for a lot of Bluehost users ( my clients ). I am not affiliate with any of those hosting. As a developer I had used more accounts than any normal users. So my experience is from real world.

I just shared my experience here. May be for all clients regarding blue host were bad for me

But those were really bad experience.

Yes go for it I was with BlueHost for a year it was mainly a positive experience, personally checkout Arvixe.com I have liked them the most out of all the webhosts I have used. The 4.95 price is really good almost too good to be true might want to checkout bandwidth limits as $ 4.95 with unlimited domains sounds very difficult to do.

Remember, when you jump ship to the next web host, chances are, you're never leaving the company. Many people have no idea EIG owns pretty much all of the large, "unlimited" hosts out there & that's how they run things - under 500 different brands so you, the end user has no idea.

As HostGator is also owned by EIG, do HostGator suspend your site and force you to upgrade if you reach a certain level of traffic like Justhost do?

I remember HostGator support say they allow about 200,000 inodes per month on the baby plan. Isn't Justhost only about 50,000 inodes/month?

They all do. Inodes are files. You are still being limited. An inode is a record in a disk table which contains information about a file/folder such as its size, owner, device node, socket, pipe, etc. except data content.

They didn't like what someone wrote in the comments area of a blog and shut them down. What happens when they don't like something on your site, maybe something you didn't even write but a commenter did?! Poof! There goes your business! GONE!

My advice would be go with a smaller company where you're not "just another account". You'll be amazed at the service that's available outside of the affiliate driven bargain basement companies. Most of these companies use their own proprietary control panels that are junk & they limit the backup features so you can't get a backup and go elsewhere. Having migrated 1,000+ websites from BlueHost, DreamHost etc etc, I can tell you from experience it's a royal nightmare. The control panels take forever & ever to load and things are made way more complicated than they should be.

Well, it's not the same service. That's the point. They can CENSOR you for anything you write or choose to post. Not just in your comments area.

Do you want an outside company to be the "moral" judge over your business? Where is the line drawn? If they don't like anything you write or what people on your site write, then you're gone.

Who wants a company picking through their blog with a fine-toothed comb and watching everything they say and do? Not me. I'll pay the extra $5 bucks a month and bring peanut butter and jelly into the office.

I'm NOT saying it's not smart to shop around. You should do that. But know who you're dealing with.

This isn't just a hosting company. They are a moral judge OVER your entire online business.

Buyer beware.

I'm also a web developer, but I expect my clients to buy (or have me buy) domain names and Bluehost hosting accounts of their own. So I don't need a lot of sites in any one Bluehost account. Just 3-4 of my own sites in my own Bluehost account.

Some of my client's Bluehost accounts have like 1 WordPress blog, 1 (old) Dreamweaver static site and 1 Shopify store, so only 3 "sites" - no sweat.

By the way, when Bluehost talks about limiting speed to your account, they call it "throttling". That's only used if you have massive traffic, constant video streaming (not just links to YouTube, etc.) and the like. I've never had speed complaints, though one of my sites has a dozen popular Camtasia tutorial videos I made.

As for hacking, you have to install security plugins or services on any hosting service. Bluehost partners with some of the best online security providers and they have quite reasonable prices - allowing you to install excellent security and pay by the month for it.

  Maybe that's what you were trying to point out, but I thought it worthwhile to make sure everyone understands that this problem is not specific to any particular web hosting company. Wordpress users on BlueHost and JustHost face the exact same problem.

In my years of removing website malware, I found that most of the sites I've worked on are from bluehost & Godaddy. I'm not sure though if these stats matters in terms of server security.

For me bluehost, is an okay hosting. I like that they have a built in automatic backup/restore feature so you can easily fix your site in case anything bad happen.

I have been with Host Gator since 2007 and I like their hosting. I have a dedicated server. But do not join their affiliate program. You would be lucky to get half of the money from sales you generated for them. I am in talks with them through the legal department for about $20,000 in affiliate commissions that they refuse to pay me.

As for hosting in general, those of you who say blue host is better or host gator is better or dream host or whatever.

Just know that all these hosting companies are owned by the same corporation called Endurance International Group (EIG). They own all these hosting companies. But each company is ran individually but they are all owned by EIG

This is a small list of 16 but they own about 50 hosting companies.

Let me put it to you this way, all the companies you see plastered all over the web even those review sites you see who review all these companies against one another; EIG is laughing at them all because they can care less which company you go with, they own then all.

For me, Hostgator is worth every cent for the quality of the support. Whenever I have had an issue, it is been resolved quickly and efficiently. I would only switch if you are really confident that Bluehost can match the level of support.

I think it would really depend on your preference, HostGator has a very good support and very stable hosting capabilities. You really get what you pay for in terms of value and quality of service. If you are looking to save a few bucks on the other hand, Bluehost is not that bad of a deal. You just have to go with the one that will work best for you.

I'm using bluehost. The plan is paid upfront but you can cancel and get a prorated refund anytime. Customer service is ok though there are times I had to wait 20 mins for an online chat support agent.

I've been using Bluehost for more than 1 years and they have a very good support. They are always there (online chat) when i need help and there's a feature of their web hosting where they will automatically do a backup for you twice or four times a month (free). I've never use Hostgator so i can't comment about it but it seems like they have lost of users and good feedback.
