      Why would it be illegal?

Just another automation tool, the are a dozen or so good ones now for Twitter.

Adding friends wouldn't be illegal, though hacking others accounts and forcing them to return the favor may be.

      What's "unethical" about it?

If someone want's to make friends by adding them manually, or with software...

      What's the difference?

It's still up to the individual to accept the friendship request.

No different than follow/unfollow in Twitter.

Agreed. The situation is same. And isn't unethical -- in my humble opinion. You have the right to make your work lighter according to the opportunities.

It may be up to the individual to accept the friendship request, but do they deserve to be burdened by that?

It is the marketing telephone calls you receive when you're having dinner, the unsolicited spam you get in your inbox, and the friends requests you receive from people who really just want to get inside your wallet that annoy people.

Incidentally, that is why I was comfortable unsubscribing from most IM lists and just focusing on places like the Warrior Forum. Mostly speaking, people help one another here; I'm not so sure that most IM gurus/teachers are interested in that...

Nah this is completely legal. By using these software you are leveraging your time.

Just make sure you honestly answer people who you do friend and just don't spam em....cuz that can be ugly.

My general rule, is I asked myself if I would feel good about the money I made using this tool? I'm not so sure I would, though I'm sure others will feel it is the right thing to do, just not me.

I don't know but original social networks like digg ban you instantly for using things like that

I don't think so. But you'll be a nuisance to people if you flood them with invites.

You may get a warning (not sure) from these sites for spamming other members but I don't think it's illegal in any way.
