How to get publicity?

I don't see many people talk about publicity on these forums. I see all of the traditional IM methods and you can see how I am taking advantage of them here. But, the process is slow. Gaining website visitors, email subscribers, twitter followers, Facebook likes, etc seems to happen at a snails pace. I realize these traditional techniques take time and will pay off many months from now, but there must be a way to make a BIG splash immediately.

Does anyone have any experience with PR, publicity stints, or getting massive publicity or recognition EARLY in their IM business to help launch them? I would love to use this thread as a brainstorming session for everyone new or not yet making money in IM.

  • The great thing about gaining publicity, is that it does tailor to 'traditional IM'.

I mean, Google like 'natural' linking - and proving that you have a great product, sold a great way, where people want to like it, share it, bookmark it, and come back over and over.

The best way I have found to gain publicity is to just be an 'authority' in your niche. Not necessarily having a 'high PR' site - but to put yourself out there - in the circles on your niche.

If you sell jewelry, go to tradeshows - and set up a free workshop telling people WHY you are so great and why your knowledge destroys every one else - with your website plastered everywhere.

Set up PPC to free webinars teaching something/displaying your authority- and mention your website.

Get a spot on the local news showcasing something interesting in your field - wear your website on your shirt.

Just go out and PROMOTE how authoritative you are, without selling something. And your authority will grow. I give out free stuff all the time, and people know me as the guy that
'helps people get out of debt'. And if they want to know my website? I tell them.

That's my niche, my specialty. PR comes easy when you're passionate.

If you are passionate about your niche, and if you're selling a great product - then marketing is almost instinctual. You want to sell a great product, a great way.

And it's never about 'buying links from high PR sites' or some what-not snake oil salesman.

You have to think newsworthy rather than promotion. A press release is not a sales pitch. Set up a schedule of press releases and distribute them to your local news, newspapers, regional papers, niche magazines and national newspapers. You can also use free and paid press release distribution services.

Below is a format for a press release. It's worked for me. The release below is for a book, but you can substitute product, software, or service.
      PRESS RELEASE

Immediate Release - and today's date (or the date the paper should publish the release if it is time related)
      Contact Information:

      Your name
Your phone number -- you must have a phone number it gives you credibility as a real company.

      Your email address

      PUNCHY HEADLINE
Try not to have the headline be the same old, same old. New Book Released by Local Author. Or New Book Tells Why Your Kids Are Rotten. This is make or break it time. The headline is what will entice the reporter or editor to read your release. Use a headline like Five Reasons Kids Are Rotten: And What Parents Can Do About It.

(City you live in - Today's Date) In the first paragraph answer the who, what, why and where. Sometimes that's all the reporter will read. Don't bury important information farther down in the release. You can expand on each of those factors, who, what, why, and where later on in the release.

Keep your approach newsworthy. Of course you are excited that your book is being published, but why should anyone else be excited. Reporters are looking for news. Stress the benefits to the reader. How will it improve their life, make them richer, smarter, thinner, or more beautiful. (Personally I always go for richer and smarter because if you're smart, you can figure out a way to become thinner and more beautiful. And if you're rich you can pay for it.) If the book is fiction see if you can relate the theme to today's news or events.

Tips and guidelines are good ways to get your news release away from being too advertorial. See if you can come up with something like "5 ways to Increase Productivity" or "3 Tips to Improve Your Golf Game." Or "10 secrets to More Beautiful Skin."

If you include a quote, make it newsworthy not "We're proud to announce our latest widget," says Jim Brown, CEO. More like "I was so frustrated by always losing my ________ I knew there had to be a better way. That's when it hit me, I could attach a _________ to my _______ and I'd never lose it again," says Jim Brown, CEO.

At the end of the release center -30-, write END, or have a line of asterisks. That designates that the release has ended.

At the end of the release, below the -30- END or **** you can have a paragraph that is titled About (your company name) include a brief two or three sentence description about your company, it's url, postal address, and phone number.

The news release shouldn't be more than one page single spaced. Although many smaller publications may print the release as is, most newspapers will want to use the release as just the beginning of their story.

      Triple check grammar and spelling.

Send the release to as many of your media contacts as you can on a personalized basis. Never use a blind carbon copy if you're using email to distribute the release. Never, never, never, use a cc list where all the names of the recipients are visible. It takes much more time, but send your releases out one at a time.

If you have a spam filter, send the release to yourself to see if it gets caught. Most filters will tell you why they filed an email as spam, then you can reword so it doesn't get caught.

If you want free publicity, first you must do something that is worthy of people's attention.

You have to either 1) do something that a news reporter or maybe bloggers would like to write about, or 2) create content that people want to share with their friends or with other people on social media sites.

Notice how on Youtube there are tons of videos of "laughing baby - 100,000,000 views" or "cat and dog playing together - 25,000,000 views" but then some Joe Schmoe website SEO guy with his "How to make money online with my easy system - 400 views" who can't get any traction because nobody wants to share cheesy marketing materials with their friends on Facebook.
