I am a Canadian noob. I was wondering what kind of cost I would be looking at for domain and web hosting for a website. I know pricing differs but a rough idea would be great. Thx

    Hi

You can get hosting from hostgator, prices starting at $3.96 a month
or if you use a coupon code it will be cheaper ( ex:1 month for 1 cent. 25% off etc)
search for "hostgator coupon code 2013.

A domain should be around $10 a year, but again search for coupn discount
you will find some discounts (sometimes goddady offers discounts) just
    search for it.

I would recommend you to try DreamHost, with some discount codes(if you need codes, I can give you)

DreamHost is better than HostGator. Also if you use discount coupon code, you will get DreamHost for more less price than HostGator's 1st level shared hosting i.e. Hatchling.

DreamHost has the highest server uptime.

In my experience I have to disagree. I have sites hosted on both dreamhost and hostgator, and the ones on dreamhost often take forever to load. I've never had this problem with hostgator. It's to the point where I thought dreamhost was down at the time, but after refreshing the sites eventually show up. Perhaps if you buy the more expensive plans this isn't the case, but hostgator's basic plan has been better than dreamhost's for me.

Last week, I switched from HostGator to StableHost.

StableHost is about $34.50/year with a 50% off coupon. HostGator is about $143/year after EU tax, so it's over $100/year cheaper.

Everything so far seems the same as HG. Websites are loading at the same speed. The cPanel looks almost identical, although there is no live chat. I don't mind that at all though because they reply very quickly to support tickets.

Coupons are for the first time you pay or also when you renew the plan?

And, with that plan one can add many domains?

The coupon is a lifetime coupon, so it is recurring.

Yes, the "Stable" plan allows unlimited domains.

Since you are just starting in the online world, you could go for a shared hosting account to start with (around $5 to $10 per month), and then if your websites get more traffic you can upgrade to a Virtual Private Server (VPS) which costs a little more but it offers better security and better performance.

It differs less than you'd perhaps think, assuming you don't have special/unusual hosting needs.

Without special deals/discounts (which sometimes have "strings and catches" anyway), you're looking at about $10 per year for a domain and no more than $5/$6 per month for hosting.

Personally I like Namecheap (for registering) and HostGator (for hosting) but it doesn't matter very much. I'd just advise anyone to stay well away from GoDaddy and 1and1, myself - nothing else is really essential.

Oh ... and never register a domain in the same place where you host its site (as long as you don't do that, most other mistakes are salvageable!): http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...ml#post7628717

There are places that offer free hosting that is pretty good. Some even give you a domain tied to thiers or you can get a domain somewhere else. weebly.com is pretty good and really easy to use.

Try bluehost. It's the number 1 site recommended by wordpress. It costs roughly $6 per month but is cheaper if you choose the 3 yr option. It also comes with a free domain.

I assume OP is on a rough budget, so it's not a good deal to buy the hosting plan for years even if it's cheaper than monthly plan. Another reason is buying a longer plan will risk your money when something bad will happen to the host.

    Normal Price:
    - Hostgator Monthly Babay Plan : ~$10/month
    - NameCheap 1 Year : ~$10/year
+ Total: You'd keep about $11/month for hosting & domain name.

Above is the normal price after any promotional price expired. Before choosing each plan, head to find the coupon for the discounted!

Why pay $10/month for an EIG owned Hosting service which is on the decline?

Hosting services like Stablehost cost only about $6/month for the mid-range plan and have better support and dedicated service, and are more transparent about what the monthly resource limits are.

It's based on my opinion and experience. OP would choose whatever hosts that he want. It's just my 2cents of the price structure for standard structure.

I've already used some hosting providers such as GeekStorage, HawkHost, WiredTree, LiquidWeb as well as StableHost. I'm heading to HostGator because I have good times with them more than others in term of Speed to my geo audience, speed to me, uptime for me, and support me.

Anyways, it's all based on my personal experience; different people have different experience, so it's upto OP for his choice.

P.S This is an approximate price based on only me!

It doesn`t really matter if you`re canadian. I`ve got US hosting and I`m from UK. It`s more about what price range you`re interested in. Prices do reflect quality too, so you could get a $1 hosting plan but with poor services.

I bought domains from Godaddy and Namecheap. Both these registrar offered a coupon code(s) every month to help you save money. See the short list below:

First, remember always to Google for domain name and web hosting coupon codes by searching something like this on Google: "keyword coupon code may 2013" (Just replace the keyword with godaddy or namecheap). The same goes with web hosting.
    1. Godaddy ($1.70 - $5.00 with coupon codes)
    2. Namecheap ($9.70 or something like that with coupon code)
    3. Bluehost ($3.95 per month for purchase of 24 to 36 months of web hosting)
    4. Namecheap ($3.45 per month without coupon code)

If you are from the US or Canada, you'll get to buy a .com domain from Godaddy for as less as $0.99 with coupon codes (I don't know if this still works, coupon code : 99COMS). Approximately, you'll need to invest around $60 for a domain and web hosting. If you buy web hosting from Bluehost, you'll get a free domain for a year.

Domain will cost you $10 per year and Hosting depends on what kind of hosting you need. For me it cost about $150 per year.

  • Buy hosting and they will give your hosting for free.
Since you are a Canadian, I suggest a Canadian Greenhost, Hostpapa, it is 100% greenhosting, with a free domain to give away, only 3.95USD per month.
The most important of all, it has Canada datacenter. Fit you the best.

Obviously you have a lot of different opinions and options to think about now. I can say from experience that I definitely DO NOT recommend GoDaddy for hosting. They are OK for getting domain names, but not hosting! I use a couple different hosts, one being BrainHost. They have been excellent over the past 2 years with very quick response time and any type of support I needed. Their prices are similar to the other top players out there but at the time I bought their service they had an offer for lifetime hosting for $199.
Their plan was the same as HostGators Baby plan, unlimited domains, ect. But, purchasing this type of offer can be risky business. I have been fortunate because they are still in business and I haven't had any issues with them but it is a gamble. What if someone went with this lifetime access plan and purchase and they went out of business in a month or two? They would be screwed. So, I am not sure what you are looking for exactly but if you are a bit of a risk taker, a gambler, you may want to check into them. (heck, I have spent more than $200 in a day just betting the ponies!). I don't even know if they still offer this deal or not. Like I said, it's been a couple of years. Best of luck!

  • I don't recommend using GoDaddy for hosting.

However i do recommend getting your domain from Godaddy. I picked up a.info for $2.99 not too long ago

HostGator is much better in terms of hosting. The Baby Plan is great.

Do not get your domain name from HostGator. The same domain name that i got from GoDaddy for $2.99 was selling for $17.99 in HostGattor.

I doubt that you can even find domains for less than about $13 on hostGator. Maybe even a little more
