What's the point of a free mobile app?

All it will do is suck up sever use and add work, right? Or am I missing something??

    You can add a paid version later with a lot of improvements.
    Also you can brand your company.

    There a few options here.
    1. Free version could be an extension of your paid online app.
    2. It can contain a limited content/options with an in-app purchase extending this functionality.
    3. Free version can be a lite/trial version of the full featured paid app.
    4. Free app can have ads.

    Most of the top earners in App Store are the free apps.

    If you can create a kick-ass, well-needed app, offer it for free, and then build up an engaged and interested user base...there are a ton of things you can do with it from there.

    One idea behind free apps is just to get people's attention. Once you have (enough of) their attention it's much easier to make money from there on out.

    I have free apps on my smartphone (android).
    I get a lot of ads on the pull down screen from the top.
    But, shutting off wifi and 3g it is none ads.

    I wish I could get a spam filter for those ads.
    But, I take it they are coded in to the apps.
