Checking background information on a company / product

Hi there,

Does anyone know of any good sites to check up on a websites company history (such as when they started, who owns the company, where they are located etc), apart from the BBB? A lot of sites that are selling products either aren't registered there or have multiple complaints.

I was just wondering if there was a place where you could establish the credibility of a company or website?
