Guide: How To Use Google Analytics Like An Internet Marketer

I know there has been a lot of talk on warrior about google analytics. But our SEO team works with lots of people that are asking the same questions. Since we launched our latest website we are a bit overwhelmed/amazed by the amount of people that did not know how to use google analytics to see whats wrong with their websites and improve them (or have us improve them).

Most of the following information isnt new at all. But i think its a good thing to point them out again. Sometimes the information you need to improve and outrank your competition is right in front of you, but people get distracted by all sorts of complicated things and forget to get back to the basics of it all. We didn't invent all of these dashboards, some of them we got from other experts in the field.

In this thread i want to share some of the google analytics dashboards we use for our clients. I hope some of you can use them to your advantage. If there is enough demand for it our google certified team member will be writing a short document about how to use google analytics to your advantage.

Lets start with the ones that are simply musthaves, and work to the more complicated ones later on.

How this works:

Make sure you are logged into your google analytics account.
Simply click the link(s) in this thread. You will be taken to your analytics account where you can give the dashboard a name. You will also have to choose for what site in your account you want to make the profile. Don't worry, nobody but YOU will see the statistics, it will remain IN your account.

Off we go.

The website overview dashboard:

This dashboard is a musthave. Basically you will have 1 page of overviews of the most important statistics of your websites. Top visited pages, top referring sites, most used keywords to find your site, top visits by browser, top visits by city.

Why is this useful:

Because you can see exactly WHO visits your website, how the visitor got there, and what browser he has been using. For example: If you have a website sharing information on what clubs to visit in england, and your website is optimized for google chrome. You look at the dashboard, and see that the most visitors are from london and using internet explorer. But you dont have a lot of information about clubs in london yet, and your website shows all sorts of errors in internet explorer: What would be the first thing you would be doing? Right.. you got it.

The Social Media Dashboard:

A musthave if you are aiming at improving your ranks by using Social Media, this dashboard gives you an easy overview of how the users of various Social Media sites get to your website, what they do and what pages/content interests them the most.

Why is this useful:

Not only are Social Media sites good for backlinking to improve your rankings in various search engines, you can use their viral/sharing power to get more visitors to your website. And if you use these statistics the right way, you can see what content on your website they find interesting and build more content for them. It will improve your visitors experience, and in turn, Social Media surfers will share their positive experience on these Social Media websites. In short: You will be able to improve your content to match these visitors AND have a better chance to get people talking about it on those Social Media websites.
