Here's what you get when you pay less than 1 cent per word for articles

As an experiment I hired several writing services who charge one cent a word or less and several individual writers as well. The articles I received were barely coherent. I have included the first two paragraphs of one such weight loss article. You get what you pay for.

"The world is moving first with great progress in everything and we are living first-life to keep tandem with everything around. To keep everything in order we are bound to live advanced life; but we easily fall prey to certain diseases associated to it, and Obesity and unwanted weight-gaining are the two most irritating diseases that is severely affecting to our life.

"But, thanks to the god! A reliable product is around us in getting rid of obesity and unnecessary weight gain problems. It's a wonder fruit that provides a number of benefits to our health. Yes, the diets of XXX XXX product helps in loosing wait, very first. Let's take a look at how it works in loosing weight."

And at the other end of the scale Dee, you can also hire writers who are more expensive, and still churn out this type of unreadable tripe.

But this is a good warning to others, thanks.

I always warn people about hiring cheap writers, but they never seem to listen. At the end of the day, they end up spending more money than if they would have just purchased a quality writer in the first place.

It's really just the luck of the draw, I suppose. Just take a look at some of the freelance sites. Most of the jobs adverised offer payment of a dollar or maybe two per 500 words. You get a mix of the good, the bad and the horrible applying Even your good writers have to apply because they do not know where else to go. Finding them is very tricky.

"Actually that is what happens when you"

"Do not look at their portfolio"
I did. The quality of the articles were OK. Not great, but not garbage.

"Ask them to send a sample based on your requirements"
I did. And again what I received was OK.

I think what happens is that the samples and the portfolio are written by decent writers or are edited heavily. I did receive at least two completely plagiarized articles. I put the first 30 words in the search engine to see if it turned up. It did.

      "look at their feedback"
I didn't go through elance or other freelance sites so there wasn't any feedback. I also looked at the quality of the posts offering their writing services which again was OK. One service said they would revise until the client is happy. I got two revisions which were still garbage and just let it go. BTW I didn't use any of the articles.

        Hi Dee,

Maybe you should hire me to do proof reading for you.

        "were" should be "was".
A sentence should not begin with "And".

Never mind, we all slip up occasionally.

Actually, "were" should be "were", since 2 articles "were", but only 1 article "was".

Actually 'was' is the correct term as that sentence refers to the 'quality' eg. The quality of the articles was exceptional vs The articles were of an exceptional quality.

And, just because an article is priced low does not automatically make it low quality. I have used three writers from Fiverr and was happy with the quality. I chose to make very minor adjustments. One article included information that I Googled for accuracy. The key is that when you find a good writer you note their details down so you can reuse them.

In my experience, many times, especially on this forum, writers charge whatever they think they are worth or can get away with.

See, if they charge $5 per page, you will buy an article or two and probably not expect too much. On the other hand, if they charge $100 per page and then deliver tripe, then the client will probably not be as forgiving. They know this.

So yes, price matters, and is usually a good indication as to whether you should hire a certain 'writer' or not. When I am sourcing on the forum, I examine three things very carefully:
    • the writer's pitch
    • the writer's reputation
    • the rep of those who have reviewed their service

This is not directed at you specifically NddS777, I just have a problem with the term "charge what they can get away with..." That almost sounds unethical, as if the writing is worth $x but I can get away with $xx. You know what I mean?

This thread has given me some laughs today, that's for sure. I have seen so many "potential" clients who balk when I tell them my rates and I am sure they end up finding someone who writes pure crap but charges what the client "can afford" instead of what they should really be paying.

As has been said before, if you pay peanuts, you get monkeys.

If I opened a burger shop, would I look for the absolute cheapest meat to sell, or meat that would keep people coming back for more? Why would anyone pay a writer so little and expect it to be good?

In my offline life I sell printing. I find tons fo businesses and agents who use vista print (some using their free cards)! All I need to do is show them the quality difference between mine and theirs - if they are go-getters, they buy mine. Quality speaks volumes.

    Thanks for the example!

Well yes it's true cheap outsources are not often very good.
However I used odesk to get writers for ebooks and articles extremely cheap. Just got one tiny 4 page ebooks finished for just 5 dollars and the quality is kind of nice. So even though you will a lot of times get bad writers you also have the possibility to find great ones

I once hired one writer, he went and copy people's articles and spun it and forwarded them to me as his finished work. I told what he did, initially he wanted to deny it but when I explain exactly what he did, he promise to write another.

On the contrary, you just have to know where to find the cheap writers that are also GOOD writers.

I have found tons of low cost providers at about $5 per 500 words who have provided great content. And that isn't BS, I mean the content is often better than what I could have personally written on the subject.

I have my own method of finding high quality, low cost writers, but I'll give you a hint: college students

1¢ per word fiction. By Babbleonius Lackleather

Morgan stood by the extended glad bush of blossoming extrusions. He thought back to the days of mirth and udders. Those days once can never come back or even return in the roundabout or gladly anywhere else too. Could it be the season of the gadfly? His memory was misty as tears rained down from the wispy grog batter. Just then an engorged tick developed on the inner aspect of his mastication.

"I can never return not to the cheese dairy," he cried. But it was well enough that a policeman was hither and not yon. "I've got your umbrella in my pouch, Laddie." Said the copper as he flogged a stray penguin. "It's about time," Morgan scoffed. "The polish is dry and there will be no milk for the beans. Mother will surely want proof of purchase."

It was a hard beginning to the twilight of the dawn. Morgan buckled the ying lee flaps securing his doom as he had done several fortnights into oblivion. I'm not afraid to dye he said as he squeezed a random beet or two. Mother will be relieved.

it's kind of a double edged sword because too many people want to pay peanuts for good quality articles, yet freelance writers who don't have a lot of experience can't charge for higher rates. That makes them caught between a rock and a hard place because they want to get clients but at the same time since they're new they think they should accept pennies.
Then of course there's the quality of articles like the one in this thread, which is also a product of cheap payment.
