There are so many places to grab content for your web site(s)...
You could start with PLR articles... Depending on your niche you
could head over to google and type in, "Your niche" +PLR... Example
"weight loss" +PLR or "Golf Swing" +PLR...

You could go to article directories such as goarticles or ezinearticle
There's plenty of content where you could get some great ideas or
take the article and change it by at least 25%... That should get you started...

PLR news stories? Somehow I don't think that will make much of a news site... News is fresh not rehashed PLR content.

Couldn't you just aggregate the info from some news site? Maybe merge all aggregates into one area?

You could signup for Google Alerts and use News and variations of it as your keywords.

You would then be notified daily of tons of news headlines you could post blurbs about and link to the source etc.

IMO, you would have to add some of your own comments, or at least wordpress so you had something unique for the SEs to spider you for and send traffic your way.

I would also advise you to have unique pages for extremely important or possibly popular items/topics.

        Cheers,
        Zac

        Google News??? Google News

You can even personalize it, so if you set up a Google/Gmail account it will show you news you want it to. For example, if you just wanted SPORTS news, you could set it up that way. If you want to go deeper, it could show you just College Basketball news.

With RSS there might be a way to automate it, or at least get all those updates sent to your email.

iGoogle may also be of help. That way you could subscribe to the RSS feeds of all the big "news-breaking" sites and as soon as they update their site you will get an email or update.

I hope this helps, I'm not sure how much automation you are looking for. What I have laid out will not automate the actual site for you, rather just give you news updates directly to your email.

There are scripts out there that will take feeds and automate sites for you.

Try Googling "news aggregator scripts" - Google

Or "news aggregator software" - Google

          Thank You.

Yeah, if you are going to be doing it yourself then that's what I'd do.

Set up a Gmail account just for your topic, then customize iGoogle or GoogleNews to feed you all the news from the top sites around the net.

Do some Google searches and subscribe to the RSS feeds of all the really great sites in that niche.

This can work, but remember you are basically driving all your traffic to other sites. However, if you can make your site the "hub" where people go first, then you can do okay.

An example of a site that largely uses other news is the sports site Deadspin (Deadspin, Sports News without Access, Favor, or Discretion). Although they take a twist and usually have some sort of smart-aleck headline and a short sarcastic comment, then a link to the real article.

Although they do also have some original content of their own too.

If you check out the site, you'll see what I mean.

Nerd you have just saved me from moving ahead and writing 400 word news stories, now all I need is 4 or 5 lines and links to the original stories..

Excellent, now to pick a news niche.

              Thank you.

Often times their T & C specifically disallow their content from being used on commercial sites. Just be wary.

    Hi

Before you start something new, you may want to look at what you already have. Do you have a website with AdSense on it already? If you do, why not just drive more traffic to it? Starting a new site means you have to start driving traffic to a new entity. And why would people go to your news site when there are thousands of news sites already?

    Just playing devil's advocate.

    Enjoy your day!

For an ongoing project, the news site would be, I currently do have a website that's been running for about a month with a 500k alexa rank, but most days I don't even get a sinlge adsense click, even though I peepe the body of the article with ad's my wordpress category pages etc..

The work I'm putting into my current project is killing me for very little return.

There are loads of people out there that look for news stories, rewrite them and post them up. That's how journalism works...

How are you going to write news stories? Are you going to find stories that no one else has reported on, or are you going to rewrite stories that already done? Because I think you would run into some problems with that second one.

You're welcome to publish what you want, but for it to be considered "news" you need to follow standards that professional journalists do. Not sure what they are in detail, but you can probably research this on your own.

All news journalists use Associated Press, Reuters or similar for breaking news and then look for more info and put their own take on it. Once it's on any of those news feeds it's public domain anyway.

        (Emphasis added)

The above is a dangerous and inaccurate statement. AP/Reuters/et al are NOT public domain. They're a fairly expensive subscription service and they will come at you like anything if you use their content without paying. One of them even tried to charge bloggers for using as little as 10 words of their content not that long ago.

I've now discovered i am able to use some news feeds, problem is I'm not able to find out if I'd be allowed to use their images, I see drudgereport using some sort of images, but I wonder am I also able to do this?

Seriously? The internet is largely made up of sites that do nothing more than talk about and link back to what real news agencies report.

Look at Drudge - DRUDGE REPORT 2009®

Nothing more than links to other sites reporting the news.

Obviously a high-end example, but an example nonetheless.

I have started my news site. Got registered with many news agencies who for a fee keep me updated. Their Emails keep me ahead of news. Most of the time I get the news when it's not broke on the national and international networks.

What I get the most important advantage is most of my news used to be indexed on google. And remain at a better position from duplicate contents.

Hey I'm thinkin gof trying out wp-omatic? With this I'll drag in 2 or three different news topic feeds and then for the other topics (want to restrict to as little as possible) I will write thte stories myself?

Again anyone who has a news website, please get in touch. thanks.

The best bet is to create an account at The Voxant Newsroom and you can embed news vidoea and news texts on your site. The videos are best because you can set up a playlist that carries ads alongside the news content.

The best part though is that they pay per impression, so no-one even has to click the ads.

I've run news sites before and it's tough work. You have to hustle and post a lot of content every day to become popular (Much more than just 3-4 posts). My gadget news site became a Google news source at one point and it was fantastic traffic.

I like to watch PR Newswire for relevant press releases and announcements. It used to be free to join but I don't know if it still is.

Using WP omatic to bring in content might be a good approach. I'd have it come in as DRAFTS though, then add my own thoughts/opinions/comments to it before publishing.

As you know I own a news site (not the site in my sig) and the hardest thing about it is finding the time to open emails from authors and reporters, sort through the good from the bad then decide which to publish each day.

Starting was the hardest part, travelling the country to get a story and networking with others in the industry. Once people know about you they will send you their work, books, DVDs and music in the hope of exposure so after a while it starts to look after itself.
