Successful Kindle Publishers: What's More Important: Finding Niches or High Quality Content?

Hello All...

This question goes out to those who are ACTUALLY making consistent Kindle sales each month (its NOT for those that haven't published anything on Kindle).

Is it more important to find profitable niches to write about, or is it more effective to simply focus on writing high quality content?

Obviously, you would like to do both. But if you had to put most of your effort and time into one of these choices, which would it be?

If you focus more on finding untapped niches that can be profitable but put out poorer quality work, you might generate good income (assuming that you don't get too many negative reviews).

If you focus more on quality writing, you could be publishing in a highly competitive niche or in a very low demand niche, and end up having a top quality book that very few people will ever read (and very few sales you will generate).

I know the correct answer is a balance between the two. But which of the two is more important in your eyes.

Much Success,

I would say high quality content. Otherwise you will not benefit from repeat buyers or word of mouth, people will give you bad reviews and no one will buy your books.

But really, it should be high quality content in ONE niche that you build your brand in. Okay, maybe a couple of niches.

I was most successful in nonfiction when I published several high quality books in one niche and built an author platform (no I do only fiction but my non fictions still sell pretty good, just not as much as they would be if I was focusing on that.)

I don't see how this could possibly be either, or. Both are almost equally important. Write for a niche or market that's dead and your content won't matter much. Write poor content for a lively market and your stuff won't sell. I'd give the slight edge to content but if either of these is off you're toast.

And Lee hit it on the head when she said publishing in one niche. If you can publish a series of books then it's even easier to market to an audience who already loves what you write.

Initially the niche is the more important because the best content in the world won't sell if nobody has any interest in the subject.

But of course content is vital if you want to gain reputation and future sales in that niche.

If we're going to define "success" as consistent sales, then the answer has to be good-enough content in a niche with enough active buyers.

Who gets to decide if the content is good enough? The writer initially, in that they judge whether what they've compiled/created is good enough to have their name/pen name on it. But under the definition of success used here, the buyers and especially the reviewers have the final say.

The safe route is to start off by making the content the best you are capable of, and then hope for the best. If you're doing things right, the bar on 'best you are capable of' should go up with every new title...

Yep you need good niche selection to attract readers and good content to keep em.

That said - just because there is not a kindle book on the topic does not mean you cannot do well with it. I have taken a few topics that were not on Amazon and done very well with them - well enough to inspire some copycats.
