More Subscribers vs. Loyal Followers

So I have this Fitness website and I'm currently building my email list. I also have a YouTube video that gets lots of views each day and those people are interested in Fitness but they are mostly teenagers, students and maybe some in the 25-30.

I added a link to my squeeze page (free gifts) in the video description and I used to get about 10 new subscribers each day. This is a great thing, but on the long run these kind of young people will probably not convert very well (I'm an affiliate promoting various Fitness programs).

On the other hand, if I remove that link I get about 1-2 new subscribers each day which is a very slow process but I think those are more quality subscribers (I can even tell by the way their email address looks...they are more professional).

So what should I do? Should I keep that link just to get as many subscribers as possible? Or should I focus on quality?

Does the size of the list really matters?

    Rhadoo7,

How can you be sure that these subscribers will never buy?

I wouldn't assume anything until you have exhausted your split testing.

I have a suggestion - LeadPlayer.com allows you to embed your opt-in right into your video. This cuts the squeeze page step right out of the equation and will increase your subs.

Get your list up to around 1000 and then if no one is buying anything from you (assuming you are adding value immediately and not spamming them with products day and night) tweak the messages you send, and the products you promote, but also engage this list.

Ask them what they want! Throw a survey in there or ask them point blank in an email but engage them personally and you may find your fortunes change.

    Good luck.

A list of buyers will almost always convert better than a list of freebie takers. Consider setting up a funnel to run your youtube visitors through. Start with your current squeeze page, then set up a closely related upsell (maybe a downsell, too). The people coming through that who buy either one of those paid options will probably be your best future customers. Plus, you monetize the front end acquisition... never a bad thing to make money right at the start, right?

how about sending people from youtube to a different landing page? that way you can sign them up to a different list - you get to keep all the prospects and determine who came from where.

After they subscribe they go through a series of Follow-ups (an introduction, then some useful articles and then some promotional emails for 3 different products). Those are high converting products and the swipe emails are offered by the owners, so that aspect is as good as it can get.

I waited to have about 100 subscribers went through the entire follow-up series (12 emails) and concluded that they don't convert after getting just 1 sale...

Is that data enough? Should I wait to have more subscribers through the follow-up series?
I personally think that a conversion rate of 1% is very low for an email campaign, right?

Do what John says. Sell them something immediately. This will instantly create you a better list. As for making them loyal, you'll have to use your personality.

But you might as well use your personality on people who have demonstrated they will pay for things. After all, you're in this to make money. Let's not confuse our priorities.

So you got two options. Either have them click the youtube link and send them straight to a sales page, or send them to a squeeze page.

The sales page should be a low barrier to entry, like a low ticket offer of $7 to $37. This way they have proven they are buyers.

Buyers make better buyers than non-buyers make buyers. Go figure.

Or you can do a trial offer, like $1 or $4.95 or $7. And charge them the rest in XYZ days. It doesn't really matter. With this strat, you're on the search for a buyer's list. Straight up.

The other way is to still use the squeeze page, but as soon as they opt in, take them to one of the above. That way they immediately separate themselves.

Then you'll be able to split test your results by mailing to two different lists later on down the road. Your free subscribers list and your buyers list.

You'll see for yourself the difference in results between the two.

    Marc

PS. Yes that is low. They aren't buyers. I mean 100 people isn't very many people, but still. The numbers offer enough evidence to try something else.

PPS. Here's another important thing. If you generated those 100 people from somewhere else, and left everything else the same they might convert better. Source makes a big difference.

that's not enough data for the simple reason that you didn't tell us where the chain broke. 100 users barely has statistical significance as it is, but you gotta keep track on your open rates, click through rates, and engagement.

make sure you have a call to action in EVERY interaction with your list. it doesn't have to be an offer, just keep your list engaged with your content and test to see what works and what doesn't.

I wouldn't assume that just because they didn't buy thus far that
they won't. Some people take longer to get comfortable with you.

I'd also look for ways to use those non-buyers to help spread the
word about your site/videos and help them to go more viral.

I'm assuming that they won't buy simply because of their social status (teenagers and students)

      That's a great idea!

One more question though: in my actual follow-up series there are just 2 emails per one product, one email every 2-3 days. Are those enough or should I have at least 3 emails per one product/campaign?

no the size of the list does not matter, I made over $17,000 with a list of 145 people before... I did that selling expensive offers, but it all just depends on the quality of your list and you ability to sell things to them.

Sell a low priced item to see if the can spend and then gauge from there. Maybe a $2 product or so.

Are you asking if you should remove the offer for a free gift? And instead sell them something?

Personally, I like to give them a free gift, but I'd like to make sure it's the sort of gift that makes them want MORE.

Like a really good pre-sell report. And then, after following up with them for at least 6 or 7 emails, give them another gift - another pre-sell report, for a related product, and follow that one up with another series. Continue to provide value in those emails, but also encourage them to get the real product...

About students not having any money... Don't underestimate them. They do have money for stuff they really want. Ever notice how often they go out for pizza and stuff?

Sure, most of them aren't the right candidates for big ticket items, and they won't spend a lot of money on stuff that comes with what they're paying for already (I once tried to sell stress management info to students, and that was a big flop, what with students having access to counseling centers for free).

But fitness products, reasonably priced, could really work.

I agree with Willie on that - work on building the relationship and trust, and find a way to get them to offer your free reports to their friends too ;-)

      Good luck!

        Thanks for the tips!
So a series of follow-ups for a specific product should definitely have more than 2 emails, right? 6-7 seems a little bit too much for me, but I think I'll go with 3-4.

On WF people are always saying you need to sell something immediately, have upsells / OTOs after opt in, market within the first 2 weeks as that's when your list is more responsive etc but I don't always agree with that.

The fact is if you do things properly and build trust and a relationship with your subs and keep things relevant for them most will grow to trust you MORE over time, your email open rates and clicks will remain consistently high and they will buy from you when they are ready.

You can put a lot of subs off and make them unsubscribe if you market at them too early as they just see you as nothing more than a sales person. Don't pitch to them straight away and build their trust and it will reach the point where they trust you so much that when you do offer them something they'll bite your hand off to get it.

I mean think of your favourite websites or marketers...you continue to open their emails each time they send one, right? You don't stop opening further down the line or refuse to buy anything just because you've been on their list for a while, in fact the more you read from them the more you trust them and more trust means more likely to buy.
