Just want to know if I'm on the right track

Hello fellow warriors!

I can't believe how much I have learned from just browsing this forum and reading as much as I can! You are all so helpful, and because of that I have been keeping a journal where I write down all the nuggets of wisdom that are scattered here from thread to thread.

The reason I started this thread is because I have outlined a plan for a niche site that I am going to be starting, and I wanted your advice.

I did keyword research on my sub-niche, and settled on a domain name that is pretty relevant to the audience I'm trying to target. I don't want to be too specific, but just so you all have an idea its in the weight loss and fitness niche. I'm lucky enough to have a background in journalism, so I have brainstormed some ideas for articles, and have come up with around 25 unique ones. I've also started writing for textbroker so I can get better and faster at writing good content that other internet marketers are buying.

My game plan is as follows:

1. Write at least 4 quality and unique articles a week (500 word each minimum). Once I have 15-20 good articles I will then proceed to step 2
2. Submit my site to article directories
3. Answer questions related to my niche using Youtube, yahoo answers, and other free traffic sources
4. Start a social media campaign and interact with real people providing them information that is contained on my site
5. Monetize the site with CB offers related to my niche. I will also be building a list from the start, as I have seen how important that is. I will also be adding amazon affiliate and adsense links once I have some substantial content.
6. Once I have a following and decent content, I will start experimenting with paid traffic, guest blogging, and other sources of traffic.
7. Scale, Rinse, Repeat

I know the fitness niche is crowded but I plan on creating my own video series, diet plans, and workouts once I am more established in my niche.

My biggest weakness right now is web design, as I am terrible at is. Figuring out wordpress and the plugins are easy since I took computer science in college, but design is a whole other beast. Once I start monetizing the site I plan on getting some paid themes and widgets, but for now I'm trying to keep it free or very cheap.

Well thats what I'm planning on right now, I would love to hear some criticism on my plan. Don't worry about being brutally honest, I was in the military so I have very thick skin! Thanks again everyone!

Start with a website first. All those articles are going to link somewhere, right? Make sure you have a way to transform temporary traffic into a semi-permanent pool of readers. In other words, your site must have a list building feature.

    Hello,

For me, this is a great idea. You can also try marketing in the social media such as; facebook, instagram, and, twitter. What is great about marketing your work in the said social medias is there are different people in it. There are possibilities you can encounter a businessman.
    Hope this helps!

I have my own hosting and Wordpress site which I am posting my articles too. I also have a mailing list widget, but I'm not sure if that is good enough. I always found popups intrusive and since my site is just starting I want to avoid bombarding new visitors with popup windows. I will be asking my readers to join my mailing list after every post, which I think should be good enough for the time being.

Yes, I am definitely planning on starting a social media presence. I wanted to focus on getting some content on my site first, but do you think I should start now? I only have one article written so theres not much to look at.

      Thanks for the replies guys!

    thedudeness,

You are most certainly on the right track because you have a thought out plan.

Who cares what suggestions come through - just put your plan in motion and you will learn (by doing) what to change and what to keep.

So yes, you are certainly on the right track and you picked an evergreen market so great first step.

Keep us up to date on your progress!

I'm not going into debate if plan will work or not, i.e. if you will get barely any money or a truckload of it with your website. Success in converting readers into buyers is something that is totally different than success in seo, ranking in serps and alike. Contrary to many, many people's belief, having a traffic does not equal to earning a cash.

    But, here are my comments:
    1. Good. Keep pace with updating original content for a longer time. Your niche is wildly competitive, and 4-5 weeks of updating site may not shake the ground enough. Have you researched how much content do your competitors have (for keywords you intend to target?) - if yes, plan for double the amount of your competitors' content
    2. What do you mean by 'Submit your site to article directories'? Article dirs accept articles, not sites (as opposed to web directories where you actually submit your website's URL and other basic info). Make sure articles are also unique, and that backlinks from your resource box point to many different URLs on your website.
    3. Yeah, just don't overdo it, otherwise you'll be spending more time maintaining posts/statuses on other sites, rather than on your own website. If you want to create an instant buzz towards content on your website, I would rather employ some social media service to do the work instead of me focusing on more important things, such as how to monetize my website.
    4. Same as 3. Bring in some moderate link building campaign into mix. Article marketing + social signals alone will not be enough to rise in serps.
    5. If you already have articles that are not "salesy", rather mix them with Adsense. CB offers and Amazon products need some advertorial articles/reviews before you can expect anyone to buy anything from you. General articles won't sell CB or Amazon offers, you'll need to have articles that are targeted toward the offers.
    6. You need to clearly define pages on your websites where you are supposed to bring paid traffic in via PPC - especially if you will deal with adwords, msn, yahoo and alike. I'm not sure if target pages are allowed to have adsense if you drive paid traffic to them. Also, affiliate marketing and affiliate offers are very difficult to promote via these networks as they ban many CB offers, and also Amazon is full of trademarks that you are not allowed to use in your ads (yeah, you can try bidding on general terms, but prices are so high that you will burn eventually and very fast, unless you have high budgets). You'll probably be better off with media buying on sites that already have targeted traffic and demographics similar to your target audience.
    7. Yes, rinse and repeat - but only if you've had success with what you've planned.

All the best with your endeavors!

Thanks for the comment! Everyday I learn a bit more, so I think I'm doing ok. My biggest problem is taking action, I get caught up sometimes perfecting things when I should just do them and fix them later.

Yes, I definitely don't expect my site to get anywhere for another 12 months or so. I've been researching my competition and 1-2 years is the average age of their sites.

Thanks for the tips on social media, I made my profile in the big 3 (twitter, fb, g+) but I'm not going to focus too much on updating the content there for now. I didn't know about targeting different articles for different methods of monetization, so I will definitely add that to my plan when writing my articles.

I am definitely going to start on a PPC campaign once I get some offers ready with good copywriting. This brings me to my next question, do I need an original article every time i submit them to article and social directories? I have heard conflicting reports so if someone could fill me in I would appreciate it! Thanks!

I may have missed list building in your plan - or maybe it was implied? But, when reading about low cost items - please do not use a free autoresponder because it will come back to bite you. And, definitely do not use Mail Chimp because their terms of service do NOT allow you to send affiliate recommendations.

You are right - make a plan, work the plan, follow your metrics (optins, unique visitors or what ever you are measuring) and tweak the plan to improve your numbers. Click the last link in my sig line and pick up the tracking graph - makes tracking your metrics visual and a whole lot more fun

Your plan seems to be very good, and you seem to be intelligent.

However, the internet is complicated and internet marketing is very difficult. There is a fierce competition online in basically all niches. You have to work hard, and you have to keep working or outsource a few things.

You should look for professional help when you cannot do something the right way. Use the Warriors for Hire forum. Building a business is difficult and it takes some time to start working.
