Membership site on root directory or sub directory?

I'm in the process of creating a membership site with WP. I've seen people that have an html sales page on the .com and have the membership site at .com/members/

What are your thoughts on this? I'm thinking of setting mine up this way too. Is it a good strategy?

Thanks,
Andrew

put it in a sub directory
It makes it easier to work on the site for upgrades and major changes

    Andrew,

Yes, you can follow your .com/members/ folder. You may want to read how the WP plugin author or users recommend setting up. There are lot of variations. But, IF you go with a sub-domain, there is a bit more setup in WP. Your first idea is less messy. You can always redirect a sub-domain to the actual URL as well.

    Success,

I went the other way. I have the front page of my membership site as the destination page for all visitors -- members or non-members. Then, when a non-member clicks on a content heading, they're brought to my sales page. My philosophy? I want prospects to see what they're missing BEFORE I hit them with the sales message. Essentially, I lay out a spectacular buffet of delicacies and say, "You can't eat anything yet!". I think (for me at least) that works better than sending someone straight to a sales page.

You can see what I'm talking about by going to The CBI Clubhouse - a Community for Children's Book Writers Writing Picture Books, Easy Readers, Young Adult Books and More! and clicking on some content headings.

jonb - your philosophy is spot on. That can be accomplished through a simple redirect from the root.

The more sites I create for myself and others the more I've started to use folders and sub domains.
From a creation, maintenance and growth stand point, I've found using folders and sub domains much easier.

True, Debbie. I was addressing the idea of what visitors should see first. But you're certainly correct -- a redirect would accomplish that and leave you with some flexibility to have a straight html index page in the root directory.
