How to start building an email list?

Hey everyone.
I have a great free ebook I wrote that I want to give away and build a list with. How do you go about doing it?

I was just thinking of subscribing them from the squeeze page to mail chimp, and on the confirmation email showing a download link. Simple enough, but is this the right way to go about it? Or am I missing a critical step?

Thanks!

Thats one way to do it. Others would probably tell you to not mail the download link, but put it on a download page, so you can show other offers, besides your free one.

What is your goal in the end?

For now my goal is to build subscribers. The end goal is to have people signing up for recurring billing programs (very reasonable and they get value out of them so they should be staying) and then continuing to stay in contact with them offering advice and coaching.

I like the idea of a download page. I'm going to do that.

Freebie seekers are not very responsive to paid products...keep that in mind. Also people use different email accounts for signing up things like that...

        I would do like this:
        1. Free product - sign up
        2. $7 product as upsell or follow up email
        3. Who buys your upsell, offer them 100% commissions if they promote your site.
Let them build a list for you. And separate freebie sign ups from buyers. Promote expensive products to your previous customers and do some quality ad swaps using freebie seekers list.

You need to set up 100% affiliate commissions if you want to do something like this. I used 7 Dollar Secrets...

If you want to ensure they confirm their subscription (assuming you're using double opt-in), keep the link to the download page for the "thanks for confirming" email. That way, you're guaranteed a confirmed subscriber.

Make sure, when you send it to the people who subscribe, that in addition to its great contents, it also serves all the purposes mentioned in this post (yes, the ebook itself, not just the emails!), because that's also among the things that determine the open-rates for any future emails you send those subscribers (i.e. your income).

Don't make the crucial mistakes so many others make by not monetizing your back and or your list before you even start.

Decide what it is you're actually going to sell before you even start building a list that way you can build your list for free by collecting profits on the back.

Building a list without a monetization strategy in place first is just a waste of time money and effort

    Hey Volit!

Here is a illustration I cooked up to help someone on another thread that asked a similar question as yours. I uploaded it on tiny pic. See here => build your list

Setup a squeeze page, like you said, then think of a good way to get traffic.

    Then get testing. =)

I agree with you. Offering free gifts such as E-book is a good way to collect email list. Don’t forget to add information like “you will receive other information like ads “when visitors agreed to submit their email address.
