I've seen where it was being discussed on this forum that its better to purchase a domain from GoDaddy and hosting from HostGator. Why separate the two? Why not just use HG for both the domain name and hosting?

Opinions will vary. Just be sure NOT to use GD for hosting, HG is far better.

I believe that going through GoDaddy, or other domain name service, for domains was cheaper than HostGator in the past. I'm not so sure that is still the case as I seem to remember that HostGator dropped their price for domains somewhat recently. I second RogueOne's comment about going through HostGator for hosting as they are rock-solid in my experience and very user friendly.

HostGator for the win. However you can easily find coupons for Godaddy domains and that is why I get my domains from Godaddy. HostGator has been amazing though for hosting. I personally do not like the Godaddy hosting interface.

Currently Hostgator's regular domain price is $2 more than GoDaddy's price.

If you buy six or more domains at a time you get a discount on GD.

If you buy a lot of domains you can join the GoDaddy Discount Domain club for $7.99 per monty and save 30% on every domain.

And I agree with those that say you should stay away from GoDaddy hosting.

My current site uses HG hosting and i bought my domain from them as well. But i recently someone post about about buying your domain with GD and hosting with HG, they said something about pointing to servers when changing hosts or something like that.

Does GD use Cpanel? What is there besides Cpanel?

P.S I won't ever use any other hosting besides HG, their support is excellent.

Gator or not Gator, Daddy or not Daddy, better use the separation.

Hosting providers who provide domain names are usually buy domains in bulk that's why it seems lucrative to the users. Furthermore, the support is also easy for the clients in maintaining and customizing Domain Name related technical issue to the hosting.

If you have your domain names registered with the hosting company, you'll have more hostages inside their hands. You know!

I would not host with GoDaddy but when you buy (or renew) a lot of domains the Go Daddy Discount Domains club keeps them affordable without having to constantly check which registrar has the latest, greatest deal..
Then you can keep the domains at Go Daddy to take advantage of their pretty good DNS controls and host elsewhere.

Hostgator web hosting is much better than Godaddy. You can get buy the domain name from Godaddy since they always offered domains at discount price. I use Bluehost and Namecheap web hosting while for the domains i bought from Godaddy and Namecheap. BTW, Hostgator is having a 51% discount promotion for their unlimited web hosting just for today only.

HostGator unlimited web hosting is a must. When purchasing domains from GoDaddy, I always do a google search for godaddy promo code and will always find a 40% discount code.

Godaddy is probably simpler for a newbie. But on the other hand they seem to try and sell you something at every turn.

    Hello

It's all about not having all your eggs in one basket.

If something were to happen to your hosting account (not likely with Hostgator)- then you would still have control over your domain names.

Your point is valid but you can always claim back your domain name if something is to happen to your domain name registration provider. But its not an easy process

It's usually cheaper to buy your domains from a domain registrar then from a web hosting company. Plus if you decide you need to change web hosting companies at some point it's better to not have your domain registered with the same company so it's easier to move on.

I found the support of both GoDaddy and HostGator to be excellent.
HostGator's regular domain price is a little more than GoDaddy's price.
GoDaddy's offes a discount if you purchase 6 or more Domains. I would also agree with not using GoDaddy hosting service.

depending on the size of your website and your overall demands on bandwidth and mysql databases etc etc then hostgator all the way. If your needing something a bit stronger then we have used wiredtree (dedicated server) for almost 3 years with no issues.

Only welshgirl2 seems to be able to read in this thread... and answering the real question, which was NOT about GD and HG!
    Why separate the two?
Because you don't want to let any company to keep you hostage! If one single company is handling all the different aspects of your business - you are setting yourself up for being vulnerable. The company will be in control of your business, not you! That is the real issue, when wise people tell you to separate the registration and hosting.

Whether GD or HG... I think they are both over-valued by avid fans but that doesn't really matter.
